Sessions To Clippers?

Bucks point guard Ramon Sessions could receive an offer sheet in the next few days, according to his agent, Jimmy "Chubby" Wells.

"We're getting close with three teams," Wells said Monday, and he confirmed two of the teams were the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.

Sessions, who has played two years with the Bucks since being drafted 56th overall in 2007, is eligible to sign for no higher than the midlevel exception ($5.8 million a year).

The Knicks and Clippers are searching for point guards. New York made an offer to veteran Jason Kidd this summer, but he decided to stay with the Dallas Mavericks. Knicks point guard and restricted free agent Nate Robinson received a $2.9 million qualifying offer from New York, but he has been seeking to go elsewhere for more money.

If Sessions signs an offer sheet from another team, the Bucks would have a seven-day period to match the offer or relinquish his rights.

"I don't know what the Bucks are thinking," Wells said.

The Bucks have rookie point guard Brandon Jennings and veteran Luke Ridnour at the position, in addition to Sessions if he returns. The 6-foot-3 Sessions also can play the shooting guard spot.

Milwaukee recently agreed to a three-year, $7 million contract with 6-9 forward Ersan Ilyasova, who played the past two seasons for Barcelona in the Spanish League.​

Clippers, Knicks in hot pursuit of Sessions

The pursuit of Ramon Sessions is heating up.

Sessions, the Milwaukee Bucks talented young point guard who is a restricted free agent, is drawing intense interest from the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.

What’s more, it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities a third team — NBA officials at the recent NBA Summer League in Las Vegas speculated Oklahoma City — may make a last-minute attempt to land Sessions as well.

Officials from the Knicks and Clippers contacted Bucks general manager John Hammond Monday and they discussed Sessions’ situation.

Both teams are considering offering Sessions their mid-level exception, which starts at $5.854 million in the first season. The annual salary then can increase each year thereafter by a maximum of eight percent — or $468,000.

It is believed James “Chubby’’ Wells, Sessions’ agent, is looking for a five-year deal that would be worth approximately $34.5 million.
Both the Knicks and Clippers apparently are amenable to that request.

The Clippers have also tossed out the idea of doing a sign and trade with Milwaukee, dangling their trade exception as part of the deal.
The Clippers, Knicks and Bucks are expected to resume talks Tuesday and there are indications a resolution could occur at that time.

Sessions, 23, is regarded as one of the premier young point guards in the NBA. He has already compiled some impressive numbers. To wit:

As a rookie two seasons ago, Sessions set a Bucks’ record by recording 24 assists in a game against the Chicago Bulls.
Last season, in a game against Detroit, Sessions scored 44 points while also registering 12 assists.

Sessions, who was the 56th overall selection in the 2007 NBA draft, averaged 12.4 points, a team-high 5.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds last season.

He compiled those numbers despite averaging only 27.5 minutes a game.

It’s no secret the Knicks brass has a high regard for Sessions. The Knicks attempted to trade for Sessions last summer, and Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni has told confidants how much he admires Sessions’ game.

Likewise, Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy is a big Sessions fan. Dunleavy has been especially impressed with Sessions’ assist-to-turnover ratio.

Sessions was especially impressive in that aspect of the game down the stretch last season. In the Bucks’ final regular-season game, Sessions totaled 12 assists and had just one turnover. In the last 11 games, he totaled 100 assists and had 26 turnovers.

While the Knicks and Clippers have also bandied about possible sign-and-trade scenarios with the Bucks for Sessions, there is strong sentiment among league officials that the Bucks will be extremely reluctant to match a five-year mid-level exception deal.

These same officials claim the Bucks are in a cost-cutting mode and cite two recent Bucks moves: 1) trading small forward Richard Jefferson and his hefty $29 million contract to San Antonio in a three-team transaction and receiving little in return (power forward Amir Johnson from Detroit), and 2) refusing to extend a qualifying offer to restricted free-agent forward Charlie Villanueva, who then signed a five-year, $35 million deal with Detroit.

The Bucks also have two other point guards on their roster: veteran Luke Ridnour, a part-time starter last season, and Brandon Jennings, their top draft pick who played well in the Las Vegas Summer League.​

Clippers Still Interested In Iverson, Sessions

Even after acquiring three players from the Timberwolves, the Clippers are still interested in Allen Iverson and Ramon Sessions.

Sessions is a restricted free agent, and while there are reports that the Knicks will soon sign the point guard to an offer sheet, the Clippers remain in contention for the soon-to-be former member of the Bucks.

Iverson is expected to meet with Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy later this week. The only issue that could keep Iverson from signing on with Los Angeles is that he may not be willing to accept a secondary role.​

Lakers need to hold on to Lamar Odom, Clippers need to not grab Allen Iverson Part 1

Only in Los Angeles, it seems, could there be a basketball meltdown in the middle of July. Only in a Southland summer could there be two prolific baseball teams, a historically prolific soccer player, and yet all anybody really cares about are puny initials.

What's up with A.I.? What's going on with L.O?

For the sake of hardwood sanity in this hoops capital of the world, I come forward today with two pleas. Please, Donald Sterling, do not be suckered into signing Allen Iverson. Please, Jerry Buss, do whatever it takes to sign Lamar Odom.

Both owners are on the spot here, with resolutions coming any day now, and the predictions are mixed. It's a good guess that Sterling will not impose his ticket-selling will on basketball boss Mike Dunleavy, who has reportedly done his due diligence and decided that Iverson would be a bad fit.

Like, duh.

However, the guess on whether Buss will open his wallet and his mind to re-sign their most important missing piece is anybody's guess, so we'll start there. This is an owner who was so infatuated with Ron Artest, he allowed Trevor Ariza to walk without ever really giving him a chance to say he really wanted to stay.

Mitch Kupchak may be the face of the Artest acquisition, but Buss is the brains, Buss was the mandate, and, who knows, maybe he thinks Artest is such a tough guy he can replace two guys? Artest is not. Artest cannot. If the Lakers do not re-sign Odom, they will not win a second consecutive championship, period, end of dynasty, and I'm thinking I'm not the only one who believes that.

A couple of weeks ago at his basketball camp, when asked whether he thought Odom was coming back, Kobe Bryant said, "He better be." That should have been enough for Buss to sign Odom on the spot. Does he really want to pick a fight with his best player? Does he really want to act stronger than the guy who just carried his team to the championship?

Has he forgotten the madness of two summers ago? We've all seen Bryant rant and rave and pout. If the Lakers do not sign Lamar Odom, that previous outburst will seem like a giggle.

We're talking $4 million here. The Miami Heat are guaranteeing Odom an extra $4 million above the Lakers' guaranteed $30-million offer. The Heat contract is for more years, thus less annual salary, but it's still about that $4 million, because the NBA culture values guaranteed money above all else.

Odom, like many players, comes from an economically depressed background where sometimes even the sunrise was not a certainty. In locker rooms everywhere, players believe only in the guaranteed green, and who can blame them?

Buss needs to step up, swallow hard and give Odom that extra $4 million, even if it means he has to pay another $4 million in luxury tax.​

That's four playoff games. That's less than one year for Trevor Ariza. A championship never came so cheap. In any other year, this deal would already be done, there is no more decisive and competitive owner in sports than Buss. But something feels different here.

It was strange that Buss did not attend the team's championship-clinching game in Orlando, nor its victory parade or Coliseum celebration. It was downright sad that, judging from a photo published by TMZ.com, Buss spent the parade playing cards by himself at the Bicycle Club in Commerce.

The owner has never seemed more awkwardly out of touch with his proud creation. And while Artest is clearly a better player than Ariza, to quickly make that move shows a lack of understanding of the locker-room chemistry that made the Lakers so great. Heck, even Kobe isn't sure they will be a better team with Ron-ron.

The only way that move will not blow up the room is if Odom comes back to keep everyone calm. He has become so much more than a matchup nightmare; he has become a coach's dream. How many stars would agree to begin the game on the bench? How many veterans would not openly grumble when watching Andrew Bynum mess up the floor that he should be on?

Bring back Odom not only because of his playoff success, but also because of Bynum's playoff failures, important insurance against the distinct possibility that the kid just can't bring it for eight months. Buss knows all this. That he pulled his offer off the table is just another card trick by a guy who obviously is still full of them.

But enough is enough. It's time for the invisible man to show the Lakers that he is still there. Sign L.O., and do it as quickly as the Clippers are going to dump A.I.

That's what happening down the hall, with Dunleavy finally realizing the foolishness of his suggestion after speaking to Iverson's former coaches and executives. There was talk that Iverson was Sterling's idea, a way to juice ticket sales, but Dunleavy acknowledges that it was him.

"The guy is a great player, he's a warrior," said Dunleavy.

But Dunleavy was also reminded this week that the guy will split a locker room faster than a double-team, and that Iverson's after-hours influence on young guys such as Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon could outweigh his on-court lessons.

Dunleavy is supposed to meet with Iverson later this week but apparently it's only a formality; he wants the Clippers to stop chasing. It is assumed Sterling will agree. Just as The Poker Player needs to know when to hold them, The Donald needs to know when to fold them.

Rest Period Prescribed for Griffin Shoulder Strain

Los Angeles Clippers’ rookie forward Blake Griffin will spend the next three to four weeks resting a strain to his right shoulder which he incurred in the third game of the Clippers’ five game Las Vegas Summer League schedule last week. Griffin, named the League’s Most Outstanding Player, went on to average 19.2 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Griffin will maintain his normal lower body training and conditioning regimen, and will be further evaluated regularly. He was examined and diagnosed Tuesday by Clippers’ team physician Dr. Steven Shimoyama. A second examination today by Los Angeles-based specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum confirmed the earlier diagnosis and suggested protocol.

As a precaution, Griffin will be held out of the USA Basketball National Team Mini-Camp to which he was invited and which starts today in Las Vegas. ​

Blake Griffin Close To Endorsement Deal With Nike

Blake Griffin, the first overall selection in this year's NBA draft, is close to signing an endorsement deal with Nike, sources said. It is not clear when or if the deal will be announced, but it could be the first major shoe deal for a high-profile NBA player selected in last month's draft.

Griffin is widely regarded as the most marketable rookie in what has been a down market for player endorsements. Griffin's agent Jeff Schwartz would not comment. Nike officials gave no immediate comment.​

Sessions Could Make Clippers Contenders

Several league sources said Wednesday that they believed the New York Knicks had abandoned their pursuit of Bucks restricted free agent guard Ramon Sessions, leaving the Clippers as the prime candidate for the 23-year-old. The Oklahoma City Thunder has a tangential interest, according to sources, but is not believed to be seriously pursuing Sessions.

Despite already having Baron Davis and newly-acquired Sebastian Telfair at the point, the Clippers still want Sessions, who emerged as a solid backup and occasional starter over the last year and a half in Milwaukee, where he averaged 12.4 points and 5.7 assists in 79 games last season.

Having Sessions on the squad would immediately put the Clippers into contention. Sessions has the ability to play the 1 spot and the 2 spot making him extremely versatile. Adding Sessions to the roster would finally give the Clippers a deeper bench. Along with Craig Smith, Chris Kaman, Mike Taylor, and others the Clippers bench would be deeper then ever.​
