Bethesda's next Elder Scrolls game will nix classes, revamp leveling, and allow players to wield anything they want in each hand.

Gameplay details on Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have leaked out of an upcoming Game Informer feature. The fifth Elder Scrolls RPG will be changing and upgrading many of the aspects last seen in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Gone is the maligned level scaling system from Oblivion, which caused enemies to level along with the player. Replacing it is one that the Skyrim senior community manager says is more "like Fallout 3." Fallout 3's system only boosts the levels of enemies in critical areas when players first enter, and keeps them that way for the rest of the game.

Leveling itself works in a similar manner to Oblivion, but Bethesda has nixed classes in favor of a system that is more open to allow for either specialization or a broad use of everything. There are 18 total skills, down from 21 in Oblivion. Using any skill levels both it and the player at the same rate. However, the higher in rank a skill is when it gains a level, the more quickly it will level the player. Gaining a level also gives a perk, in another apparent nod to Fallout.

The big news about Skyrim's combat comes from the addition of a new duel-wielding system. Any weapon or spell can now be assigned to each hand. Want a shield in your left and a sword in your right? Go ahead. How about a dagger in your right and a fireball in your left? How about a shield in your right and a heal spell in your left, to bore enemies to death? Apparently, anything is possible.

Skyrim is indeed set 200 years after Oblivion and players evidently do play as the Dragonborn mentioned in the game's first trailer. The player's goal is to stop Alduin, the dragon god "world eater" mentioned in the recently translated Elder Scrolls V poem.

Along the way, Skyrim will throw a more dynamic quest system at players, with some quests only given to those with a certain level of skill in specific areas like magic or thievery. In addition, the player's decisions will affect the quests they can receive, with the family member of someone you killed possibly not wanting to give you a quest they otherwise would.

Skyrim will also feature a weapon creation system, an NPC dueling system, improved graphics, better character creation options, finishing moves, the ability to sprint, and more. In other words, probably just what Oblivion fans were looking for. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be released on November 11, 2011.

I would love the Elder Scrolls series so much if I didn't despise the leveling system in Elder Schools. Everything else is deep, interesting, and with a good overall concept, but the leveling system just angers me too much to deal with.

Why can't we just get an XP bar? ><

They only published New Vegas.

That said, Bethesda sucks. Their RPG's stink, and their take on Fallout is a travesty.

I've never liked the shitty stories of the Elder Scroll's stuff.

I loved oblivion but the only thing I hated was that everyone would level up if I did glad to see they are fixing that

Think of it as Fallout: Might & Magic. Swords, trolls, knights, spells...

The story is pretty good, from what I've read. Every time I've played Oblivion, I get arrested for stealing within 10 minutes of starting and put the game back on the shelf.

I should really play it one day without stealing.

Or just get/duplicate 4 strong potions of chameleon and go on a stealing/killing spree.

I doubt you can do that in the first 10 minutes.

I would get out of the sewer, go into the town, go into someone's house and then be assaulted by either the tenant of the house or the police outside. For a game that takes place in a medieval setting, they sure have a great response time.

I dunno how I still get Game Informer, but I actually read the Skyrim article and it really does sound amazing.

• Dynamic shadows
• If a weapon and a shield or two weapons are equipped, you cannot cast any spell.
• It seems that smithing can only be done in Forges (you cannot repair your equipment everywhere like in Morrowind or Oblivion)
• Incredible level of detail such as : blood vessels on skin, modelling, animations, clothing
• Meteorological effects: clouds are gathering in real time around mountain peaks, snow affects textures.
• A major inspiration for snowy landscapes seems to be artists like Brom and Frazetta.
• "After Oblivion where every place looked alike, in Skyrim you'll find once again the eccentricity of Vvardenfell. Here every Nord Clan has its own colors, its own identity."
• For consoles: the "block" action is performed by pressing both trigger buttons at the same time. Each separately correspond to the action of what you equipped in one hand or the other.
• 80 spells among which some are entirely new
• Spells confirmed: Detect Life, Fury (force enemies to fight between them), Circle of Protection (hurl enemies outside a magic circle), Snow trap (triggers only when an enemy walks on it), Lightning, Fireballs.
• Concerning finishing moves we'll see stuffs like: Axe blade planted in the neck, dagger in the chest.
• Concerning skills: Acrobatics doesn't exist anymore to prevent the player boosting this only by jumping on stand.
• AI: NPCs have day and night activities like cooking and brushing the ground in front of their houses.
• Dialogues: most "important" NPC like simple villagers won't have any dialogue tree, instead they'll directly comment on rumors or on what they're doing; only important NPCs will actually exchange dialogue with you, you CAN cut short the dialogue simply by walking away.
• Every city and town is bound to some particular resources meaning if you burn their mill or mine, you affect their economy and they'll be forced to buy flour or mineral somewhere else and when you'll want to buy these resources here again it will be more expensive.
• Archery: when aiming at something, you can hold your breath (consuming stamina) and the action is slowed.
• Dark Brotherhood mentioned as might be in (the reason being that the devs had a lot of fun developing it in Oblivion)
• Dragons can be unpredictable in their behaviour, they will fly in the air, crawl on the land, they can crash when wounded.
• On the favorite menu: "Clicking on a key, the screen freezes and a list of weapons or 'favorite' spells is shown next to each hand".

• Each mission will be a bit different from the same mission played by another player who has done other quests. Also can be different depending on which mission you did before.
• If you meet a Giant on the road he might not attack you unless you attack him.
• It seems he says that when most NPCs give you a quest, they'll give you precise directions or accompany you to the road showing you which direction to take to go on on you quest.
