Fourth Place! A summary coming shortly
I took him the Manager of the Year award, and loanee Daniel Sturridge finished second in the Young Player award.
Thoughts on Players
GK
Tim Krul - Was rock solid all year. Had a bit of a dip in the middle of the year, but came back even stronger. Fraser Forster has played well for Celtic, but this is Krul's shirt
FB
Danny Simpson - Exceeded expectations in the first half of the season, but kind of slumped in the second half. Will have a fight for his spot next season
Francois Clerc - bought as a LB, but out of his depth. At RB he faired better, but I'm not sold on him
Davide Santon - His leg break sapped him of some of his skills. I dunno if he will be what he was hyped up to be. Still has a place, but ceiling is lower than hope
Tamas Kadar - ended up playing 20 matches for me, which is more than I'd have ever thought. He was rock solid and earned a contract when I was thinking of letting him go
Ryan Taylor - He'll be sold, but played well when he had a chance
CB
Steven Taylor - immense all season. Probably my pick for Player of the Year
Coloccini - he struggled all year. I never felt comfortable with him after a couple of bad performances. Still my best CB by stats, but was out played by Goeweleeuw
Jeffrey Goeweleeuw - one for the future became one for the present. He became Steven's primary partner and has a shot to secure it next season
Frederik Sorensen - another young guy, played very solid all year
Midfield
Tiote - our slump coincided with his ACN duty. A destroyer in midfield who could still pick the odd pass
Cabaye - the midfield boss. Played a ton of assists and asserted his control on midfield. Holding on to him could be tough
Mohamed Diame - a nice backup for both Tiote and Cabaye. Did well at both
Danny Guthrie - solid if unspectacular. Ideally, I will find an upgrade, but as a 4th midfielder he's not bad
Hatem Ben Arfa - my first choice AMC. Ran hot and cold with his goal scoring form, but in the last month he was sensational.
Sylvain Marveux - he played AMC while Ben Arfa was hurt and never asserted himself. He slumped when Ben Arfa came back, and never impressed again. Poor attitude and will be sold
Wingers
Demba Ba - more of an inside forward for me this year, he needed a bit of a rest, but he made the offence tick. His drives from the left flank opened everything up for everyone else. Would like to see a better finishing rate though
Gutierrez - Frustrating. 18 assists and 8 goals, but I can't help feel it should have been more of both. Lost count of how many times he kicks a cross right at the first man. Sidney Sam will challenge, but Jonas is still first choice
Emil Larsen - he took some time to adapt to our system, and I'm still finding his best spot, but in the last 2 months he picked up some great goals and good all around play
Jonathon Pereira - Not really sure why I bought him. He seemed to just be 'there' never creating much of anything. Good utility man, but he may find games hard to come by
Strikers
Danny Sturridge - 17 goals, what else can I say? Without him, there is no way we are looking at CL football next season. Wish I could keep him on full time, but his wages are crazy. The fans loved him, and he'll go down in NUFC lore
Papiss Cisse - he struggled just after I bought him, but a change to a 4-3-3 built around him while Sturridge was hurt seemed to bring out the best in him. Six goals in the last four games (all wins) pushed us up the table and secured the Europe. Looking forward to even more next season
Leon Best - the forgotten man. He played 5 games for the seniors, bitched about playing time, and was sent to the reserves. Scored 12 goals in 12 games, so he has talent, but won't be in a Newcastle shirt next season
