I love how this is a "Fuck Gamestop" thread. While it's probably deserved to hate on Gamestop, why not "Fuck Microsoft" for saying they're taking away your option to actually physically own your game? Those are the real assbags in this discussion.

Because it's becoming less and less of an issue. People don't "own" most of their music and movies anymore - games are the next step in that evolution.

Hell, you don't "own" your copies of games on Steam and everyone on PC loves it.

but if you want to deal in hypotheticals, what's to say smaller companies wouldnt buck that trend to sell more copies at release. Or even a larger company like EA charging $40 for the next Battlefield at the same time as Activision is charging a full $60 for the new COD...

Those losers went out and bought the NFL license when 2k games was charging $20 for a brand new NFL game (that also happened to be better) so they could continue to charge you full price for that shitfest Madden. Among other shitty money grubbing practices. EA is among the slimiest of the gaming companies.

The big dogs will be the last companies to undercut the competition. It's going to be the indie companies trying to break into the market with bargain priced games, if anything.

Not sure how I feel about this. Two huge corporations arguing over which one gets more of my money.

I'm not a fan of gamestop at all but anti-used game tech is a joke.

As far as I can tell it hasn't so far. I'm pretty sure just looking at the Games On Demand on XboxLive I've seen times when I can go out and get the game cheaper either used or brand new for lower than the download price. I don't see companies lowering the price of games and passing the savings on to us.

Gamestop's biggest problem (in my eyes) is their pricing strategies. Almost anywhere online is cheaper but less convenient in the sense that there's no Amazon or eBay store I can walk into right now and buy the game I want. I can't count how many times I've walked into their store, saw a game I wanted, checked my phone to see how much cheaper I can get it online, and then walked out without buying anything. Meanwhile, I've got a GS employee hassling me the entire time I'm browsing. The Gamestop knockoff stores like Gorilla Games are even worse. Those guys mix their used games with their new games on the shelf as to obfuscate whether your getting something new or used and the pricing furthers that strategy.

Combine their pricing issues with their pushy and awkward employees, shitty trade in values, and just miserable overall atmosphere in the store, and I'm sure most gamers are of the same sentiment to see Gamestop eat shit.

It's not cheap to have a Gamestop in every other neighborhood and 3-4 employees in there at all times.. Gamestop is always going to be a bit more expensive because of overhead... Amazon doesn't have to maintain a storefront and they have a ton of companies that pay them to be able to sell on their site. Both business models work.

It's the Best Buy-type stores that are going the way of the do-do with Walmart expanding it's electronics section and Newegg/Amazon/etc internet companies undercutting them at every turn.

I've made my opinion on digital media known, so I won't rehash it. The fact of the matter is, Gamestop rips off customers AND screws developers, so there is no reason to ever really support them unless you're someone that either has no patience or hasn't discovered the internet yet.

Fuck the U.S Govt for continuing to castrating competition in broadband and internet access.

I agree with everything you said except while I somewhat agree with fuck developers, I'd say what you described is much more fuck publishers. Publishers are a necessary evil for some developers, and them sucking is part of why indie games are really getting huge.

I have over 72 games on steam, 38 of them are installed and ready to play. I love this system.

It really is the best. And it stands as a shining example of how digital only can work for games. Does that mean everyone will do it that way? No, it doesn't. But the fact that Steam is really the ONLY one that does it and they aren't greedy about it is refreshing and awesome.

But IF they so felt like it MS can corner the used or borrow market easily as well. Libraries and Amazon both have borrow systems. I can lend an E book to a friend for two weeks and I wont be able to read it until it expires. I would imagine it would be very simple for me to "lend" my digital right to Sethmode for a few days. Or sell it to MS for 400 points then sell it to Seth for 800 points.

Im sure only having 10-14 hour campaigns screws with the lend idea though.

I have a Kindle...the borrow feature is...okay. I was more excited about it in theory but you can only borrow from a certain list and it's only 1 book a month. Now, I don't have any friends that have a Kindle, so perhaps you can lend or trade more if you do it with a another person directly. Either way, it's a good idea that I think we'll eventually get to. I think digital renting will get to video games as well. It's already how I watch 99% of the movies I pay for. I think the only problem with it at this point is Hard Drive hang-ups and download times, both problems I don't see being problems for much longer.

That's a very narrowminded approach. There are games that wouldn't exist if it weren't for Steam. Digital only is more than just "Dude, the new games are still $60!" The internet and digital only has allowed for the indie boom, and those games are a variety of prices, none fixed, and none $60. It is very reasonable to be optimistic just based on this fact alone.
