Go Beavs: An Oregon State Dynasty

(7) Oklahoma comes back to defeat (1) Texas 27-24
Tex-OU.jpg

OU WR Jerry Morgan left wide open for a 51-yard touchdown to give the Sooners their first lead in the game early in the 4th quarter.

Dallas, TX - The Longhorns looked like the best team in the nation early on as they jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the 1st quarter. Though the come back was already underway by the end of the 1st half as OU QB T.J. Lee threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to WR Howard to cut Texas' lead to 14-10 at halftime. Early in the 4th quarter OU QB T.J. Lee found a wide open WR Jerry Morgan deep over the middle of the field for a 51-yard touchdown to give Oklahoma its first lead of the game. Lee might get most of the praise but the OU offensive line allowed HB Butler to have an effective running game to take the pressure off of Lee. Texas would mount a come back of their own late in the 4th quarter when Longhorn QB James Minor hit WR Oliver for a touchdown to make it a 27-24 lead for Oklahoma. But the Sooners were able to run the ball and the clock out to knock off rival and no. 1 ranked Texas.

Texas 24
QB Minor: 21-34, 247 yds, 2 td, 2 int
HB Whittaker: 16 car, 39 yds, td

Kirk: Florida Lee: LSU

Chris: Welcome back to the Big House. [crowd cheers] Penn State is coming off of a close loss to the now no. 2 Wisconsin Badgers. The Nittany Lions will look to rebound today against a very good Michigan team. Michigan looks to get back into the national picture. Can they get it done today?

Kirk: Look. Penn State has already defeated both of the teams that were in last year's national championship. The Lions have already defeated Alabama, USF, Pitt, and just suffered the close loss to Wisconsin. This Lion team is tested and will have no problem taking care of Michigan today. [crowd boos] Penn State has some great receivers and I don't believe the Michigan corners matchup well against them. If PSU QB Evan McKinley can keep the ball away from Michigans superstar safeties, then the Lions should roll to a big victory.

Lee: Kirk. Not so fast again! [crowd cheers] Michigan is going to pound the Lions with their run game all game long. They will take advantage of their terrific offensive line to take over the game and get a huge victory today here in the Big House! [Lee puts on a Michigan helmet and starts singing "Hail to the Victors"] Go Blue! Go Michigan!

Yeah. I did an Oregon State dynasty last year on Sportsgamer but it is way amateurish compared to this one. I didn't know how to post pics. It went to the end of season three if I recall. Before that I did a San Jose State dynasty on my PS2 when it was called MaddenNation, but I think Sportsgamer closed that section of the dynasties. That one went to the end of season three also.

Washington State (2-3) at #11 Oregon State (4-0)

Corvallis, OR - Oregon State is now edging close to the top ten again. It is difficult to know what to make of the Beavers' success as they really have not played anybody besides Cal. But even Cal is not really doing very well as they have yet to win a conference game. In come the Cougars of Washington State in what looked to be an easy conference win for the Beavers at home in hostile Reser Stadium with cold, rainy conditions.

The Cougars actually started the game off pretty well as they were able to get two first downs on their first two plays of the game. Then disaster struck when WSU QB J.T. Levenseller went down holding his foot. Levenseller had suffered a foot stress fracture and will be out at least one week so in came redshirt sophomore QB Chris Harwell to take the snaps. It is safe to say that the Cougar drive came to a halt and they were forced to punt.

Oregon State looked to try to get HB Marvin Quinn involved early but the run game was met with mixed results against what is perceived to be a very weak Cougar defense. However, the Cougs forced an OSU 52-yard field goal attempt which kicker Reggie Smith kicked wide right to give the Cougars some life.

However, the Cougs struggled against the dominating Beaver defense. Though the Oregon State offense also struggled but OSU punter Nick Carpenter was able to make a fantastic punt, pinning WSU at their own 1-yard line. On the next play the Cougars attempted a QB keeper out of shotgun, where WSU QB Chris Harwell was met by OSU DE Brian Dailey, who sacked Harwell inside the end zone for a safety to put Oregon State on the board up 2-0

On the ensuing possession, the Beavers stalled, setting up a 46-yard field goal attempt. This time Smith nailed it through the uprights to give Oregon State a 5-0 lead going into the 2nd quarter.

WSU QB Chris Harwell would not help matters any when the nickelback, OSU CB Matt McDaniel picked him off. On the possession for Oregon State, HB Jacquizz Rodgers came in for Quinn and was absolutely blasted. Rodgers did not get back up and left the game with a bruised sternum. The Cougars were here to play. However, OSU QB Bryan Rossner would hook up with TE Adam Banks for a 22-yard gain where the TE was tackled just short of the goal line. On the next play, Quinn ran it in for a short touchdown run to put the Beavers up 12-0.

Washington State would counter back with an impressive drive. Harwell did not look like the back up QB as he threw strike after strike. Although, the drive would stall in the red zone, forcing a short 21-yard field goal to put the Cougars on the board, down 12-3.

There was under a minute left. Just enough time to see what Rossner could do. Rossner led a very well managed drive that set up a 36-yard field goal just as time expired to give Oregon State a 15-3 lead at halftime.

The Beavers were intent to try and get Quinn going on the ground game but it was just not working very well. However, that would leave Rossner to throw one over the top to WR Brian Herring, who had beat the coverage for a 30-yard touchdown to put the Beavers up 22-3.

Highlight

With Oregon State pulling away, WSU QB Chris Harwell was forced to press. The result would be OSU CB Matt McDaniel's second interception of the game. Although the Beavers were unable to take advantage of the turnover after they were forced to punt.

The game would now move into the 4th quarter with OSU firmly in command of this one. One last drive would see Rossner throw a laser to WR Alex Whitehead who was able to beat double coverage on a post for a 13-yard touchdown to put this one away. The Beavers were now in front 29-3.

The Cougs would get a meaningless touchdown in the last few minutes when Harwell hooked up with WR Anthony Wade to make the final score alittle more respectable as the Beavers took care of the Cougars with a 29-10 win in Corvallis.

PSU QB Evan McKinley throws for 371 yards and scores three touchdowns to lead Nittany Lions to victory.

Ann Arbor, MI - Michigan stuck first when QB Jake Irvin hit WR Harrison for a quick 31-yard touchdown. However, by the middle of the 3rd quarter, the Nittany Lions were ahead 31-13 mainly behind the play of QB Evan McKinley and his terrific WRs. However, Mich HB Brandon Smith who was stopped for virtually nothing for the majority of the game, finally was able to break loose for an incredible run. Smith juked, jived, and spun his way until he found open green for an incredible 66-yard touchdown run. The run sparked the Wolverines and then they were able to get the onside kick. Next, McGuffie was able to score on a 25-yard screen pass to make it a 34-27 game with only 2:23 remaining. But this time PSU QB Evan McKinley put the gam away with a drive that would end with a HB Malcolm Young 1-yard touchdown. However, Michigan would score a late touchdown but was unable to recover the onside kick as Penn State held on to a 41-34 victory.

I don't know what happened to Michigan. Their offense just totally sputtered. It looked like it was going to be a shootout at first but Penn State was the only one that kept scoring. Then when it was almost too late, Michigan just got on fire but it was too little, too late.

That WSU win was not very impressive. We'll need to play a lot better if we're to beat anybody good.

Oh, okay. I'm forced to guess because I only have HB#28 since I'm on the original rosters. Do you know who he might be? I'll change him to somebody else who he might not be. haha

Chris: Welcome to Madison for a monstrous Big Ten matchup between the no. 1 Buckeyes and the no. 2 Badgers. [crowd cheers] This is a huge Saturday for college football. Not only do we have no.1 versus no. 2 here in Madison but we've also got two undefeated SEC teams that will be tested today. Undefeated Auburn will play LSU. Also, undefeated Tennessee will play the struggling defending national champions, Alabama. We'll have a better idea of who might be on top of the SEC after today. Out in the Big 12, we've got Texas taking on Nebraska in Lincoln. And out west in the Pac-10, Arizona State will try to knock off USC. So we've got a huge day of football. We'll get to all of this and more when we come back.

Chris: Wow! I'm shocked that you both are going with the Sun Devils over the Trojans in the Coliseum. I'll have to disagree with you guys on that one. Well, we now turn to this one here. [crowd gets going] The Big Ten looks like the real deal with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, and even Michigan looked good last weekend. The winner today will be the number one team in the land. However, Ohio State does come in without their star WR Lamaar Thomas who has been out of action since week 5 with a hip pointer that he sustained against Indiana. I understand Erin Andrews has a report on whether Thomas will be able to play today...

ea-49-.jpg

Erin: That's right Chris. I sure do. It looks like it will be a no-go for Lamaar Thomas. He will definitely not play today, but there is a chance that he could be ready next week. I spoke to Thomas and he told me that he is confident that Ohio State can win without him. Back to you guys...

Chris: That's bad news for the Buckeyes. He's really been a huge playmaker for them. Can they win without him guys?

Kirk: They can win without him. [crowd boos] Ohio State will have to rely more on HB Mike Tellis to make some plays on offense. I do think it makes it a lot tougher for Ohio State to win today and honestly, I don't think they can do it. Wisconsin is too tough on defense. This is exactly the type of game that the Badgers are looking to get into today. This will be an old fashioned Big Ten low scoring game. Wisconsin wins a close one today. [crowd goes wild]

Lee: How about that Kirk! You picked against your Buckeyes! Calm down now. Wisconsin has maybe the best tailback in the nation by the name of Will Pittman. We all remember him from the BCS championship game a couple years ago against Florida. This kid is fantastic. However, Wicsonsin could have trouble protecting their junior QB Gavin Campbell with an injury to their starting LT. But it should not be that big of a problem because of Pittman. [Lee puts on the Badger headgear as the crowd goes nuts] Go Badgers!

#9 Oregon State (5-0) at Washington (2-3)

Seattle, WA - The Beavers have now moved into the top ten mainly because of a very weak non-conference schedule and an equally weak Pac-10. And here was another weak Pac-10 team, the Washington Huskies, who have not looked any better under Lane Kiffin. It was another cold, rainy day in the northwest where the Beavers would look to stay undefeated.

The Huskies would start the game about as horrible as possible when UW QB Luther Leonard floated a deep ball that was easily intercepted by OSU FS Matt Arnold.

Waspic1-4.jpg

OSU FS Matt Arnold with an easy interception.

On the other hand, the Oregon State offense looked fantastic on its opening drive. HB Marvin Quinn was finding open holes and QB Bryan Rossner was hitting open receivers. The perfect drive came to an end when Rossner hit WR Alex Whitehead on a deep crossing route. Whitehead did the rest as he side-stepped by a tackle, and scored when he dove across the goal line to give Oregon State an early 7-0 lead on a 36-yard touchdown.

Waspic2-4.jpg

OSU WR Alex Whitehead with some YAC to score on a 36-yard touchdown.

Highlight

The Huskies would look alittle better on their next possession as they got some first downs under their belt, but the Beavers' defense would force a Husky 53-yard field goal attemp that sailed right. It would not take long for Oregon State to respond as the Beavers' offense was looking unstoppable. Finally, OSU HB Marvin Quinn would cut back and find a big hole for a 9-yard touchdown scamper to put the Beavs up 14-0.

Waspic3-4.jpg

OSU HB Marvin Quinn with a 9-yard touchdown scamper.

Again, the Huskies had some success but the Beaver defense stopped Washington from getting into the red zone, leading to another Husky field goal attempt. This time from 48 yards out and again it was missed to the right as that brought an end to the 1st quarter.

The Beavers looked like they were about to score again early in the 2nd quarter, but Quinn was stuffed at the goal line. OSU coach Mike Riley decided to go for it on 4th & goal from inside the 1-yard line. HB Jacquizz Rodgers was blown up behind the line of scrimmage as the Huskies made a play to keep them in the game.

Washington gained a huge wave of momentum with the goal line stand and it sparked the Husky offense. UW QB Luther Leonard was looking sharp. Then UW HB Demitrius Bronson found some room to the outside for a huge 41-yard gain. The Huskies would take advantage of their opportunity when Leonard threw a beautiful lob in the back of the end zone to HB Demitrius Bronson for a 1-yard touchdown. The Huskies had marched 99 yards and made it look easy to cut the lead to a one score game, 14-7.

Waspic4-3.jpg

UW QB Luther Leonard to HB Demitruis Bronson for a 1-yard touchdown to cap off a 99-yard drive.

An Oregon State drive would end with a three and out when Whitehead could not make a catch in traffic that was broken up. The Huskies would cut the lead further when they finally put the ball through the uprights from 22 yards out as the last few seconds ticked off the clock. The Beavers were only up 14-10 at the half.

The Beavers came out with a bang to start the half as QB Bryan Rossner found WR Brian Herring on a short crossing route that Herring took for a 48-yard gain. However, Rossner would be sacked on 3rd down in the red zone. Thus, Oregon State would only get a 38-yard field goal to go ahead 17-10.

The Huskies had a chance to tie but only achieved a punt back to the Beavers. Sensing that the game was close, the Beavers mounted an impressive, balanced drive. In the red zone, Rossner playfaked to Quinn, rolled to his left, and hit a crossing Whitehead for a 13-yard touchdown to increase the Beaver lead to 24-10.

Waspic5-3.jpg

OSU QB Bryan Rossner hits WR Alex Whitehead for a 2nd touchdown.

The Huskies were again forced to punt after a three and out. However, on the punt, OSU HB Marvin Quinn was hit low, upended, and the ball hit the turf, where it was taken back for a huge Husky touchdown. Husky Stadium went into pandamonium. Just as the Huskies were about to attempt the XP. The official came out and said, "The play is under review."

Waspic6-1-1.jpg

Is Quinn's elbow down?

"After futher review, the play is reversed," said the official. "The returner's elbow was on the ground as the ball came out. Therefore, it is not a fumble. First down Oregon State."

The officiating crew was met with a chorus of boos. However, Oregon State was unable to do anything on offense. But, OSU punter Nick Carpenter made another fantastic punt as he pinned the Huskies at their own 2-yard line. Maybe the secret for Washington to have success on offense is to get backed up on their own side of the field because UW QB Luther Leonard threw to TE Kavario Middleton, who would not be tackled until he had gained a ridiculous 84-yard gain.

Waspic7-1.jpg

UW TE Kavario Middleton with a ridiulous 84-yard gain.

The Huskies were suddenly at the OSU 14-yard line. However, OSU held on 3rd & 2. Then UW coach Lane Kiffin, of the Pete Carroll tradition, decided to go for it. Leonard would throw one up into the corner of the end zone where OSU CB Mike Mayes was there to make a big interception.

Waspic8-1.jpg

OSU CB Mike Mayes makes the interception in the end zone.

As the game moved into the 4th quarter, Washington fans were starting to flood out of Husky Stadium. If they were not already on there way out, they soon would be when OSU HB Marvin Quinn broke through the Husky front seven, breaking arm tackles, and taking it to the house for a 74-yard touchdown run to put this one away. The Beavers now had a commanding 31-10 lead.

Waspic9.jpg

OSU HB Marvin Quinn breaks loose for a 74-yard touchdown run.

Highlight

The Beavers would tack on a late field goal and then UW QB Luther Leonard would throw another interception that OSU MLB Paul Jones took back for a pick-six as the Beavers would get another lop-sided victory with a final score of 41-10.

Buckeye HB Jon Cooper proclaims who is no. 1 after a 25-yard run that sealed this one for Ohio State.

Madison, WI - This one was as good as advertised. Ohio State was only ahead 14-10 at halftime. Then, to start the 2nd half, disaster struck the Buckeyes when HB Mike Tellis left with a bruised elbow that sidelined the talented tailback the remainder of the game. This game was supposed to be about OSU HB Mike Tellis and Wisc HB Will Pittman. However, it would be the OSU backup HB Jon Cooper that was the hero today as he ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns, including a touchdown run late in the 4th quarter to put the final nail in the coffin as Ohio State took a 21-10 lead. Although OSU QB Anthony Heffner continued his turnover issues. Even on a very questionable last pick-six when Ohio State only needed to run the clock out. The last pick-six and a Wisconsin 2-point conversion cut the game to a close 21-18 score. Fortunately, for Ohio State, Wisconsin could not come up with the onside kick as the Buckeyes remain the top team in the land even without speedster WR Lamaar Thomas.

Top Choices: Florida State (wk 14), LSU (wk 10), Texas (wk 13)

LSU is gaining ground with Butler, but it looks like Butler will be doing the warchant soon.

HB Kevin Fox 5* #2 (Fox1994)
Las Vegas, NV
Top Choices: Michigan (wk 10), Virginia (wk 8), Ohio State (wk 13)

Michigan is still clearly Fox's favorite choice, but after a trip to Charlottesville where Virginia defeated North Carolina, Fox is considering the Cavs.

WRCourageousCampbellSouthBendIN.jpg

WR Courageous Campbell 4* #5 (jayroddog6)
South Bend, IN
Top Choices: Texas A&M (wk 5), Michigan (wk 10), Penn State

Campbell looks intent on being an Aggie even though he saw in person Texas A&M lose to the Red Raiders in week 5, and another recent loss to unranked Oklahoma State.

WRChrisJacksonHiloHI.jpg

WR Chris Jackson 5* #2 (Icefist)
Hilo, HI
Top Choices: Penn State (wk 13), Miami (wk 7), Hawaii (wk 10)

Penn State continues to be Jackson's top choice. However, after a visit to beautiful Miami, Florida, the Hurricanes moved ahead of Hawai'i on his list even despite the Canes getting blown out by Florida State.

DTDexterLeePortlandOR.jpg

DT Dexter Lee 4* #4 (aGONZO)
Portland, OR
Top Choices: USC (wk 13), Oregon (wk 11), Cal (wk 14)

The entire west coast continues to recruit the talented DT. As a result, USC has now moved to the top of the list, but Oregon, Cal, Oregon State, or UCLA could easily be his final decision.

CBKyleGarvellaLosAngelesCA.jpg

CB Kyle Garvella 5* #1 (raiderfan7)
Los Angeles, CA
Top Choices: UCLA (wk 14), Cal (wk 11), Nebraska (wk 13)

It still looks like Garvella would like to stay close to home as UCLA is still his clear favorite. Though Garvella is starting to really like Cal. He's also considering becoming a black shirt for the Huskers but is unsure if he wants to be that far away from home.

FSTrentRomeCharlotteNC.jpg

FS Trent Rome 5* #1 (nfcsouth25)
Charlotte, NC
Top Choices: Nebraska (wk 13), Georgia Tech (wk 11), Texas (wk 7)

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini is really after this kid to return the black shirts back to the glory days. However, Rome is starting to really consider Georgia Tech and loves the Atlanta area. Rome did visit Austin in week 7 to see the Longhorns beat an average Baylor team, and liked what he saw.

Chris: Well, we're back in the Big Ten for another big game. Penn State is in Columbus today to take on the undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes. [crowd cheers] Ohio State sure looked impressive last week in Madison but can they continue this success against a very good Nittany Lion team? Remember, Penn State's only loss was to Wisconsin, and they only lost by a field goal. This should be a good game today. We'll get to this game. Right now, we will send it to Reese Davis, Mark May, and Lou Holtz who will preview the Pitt-Notre Dame game. I wonder who they'll pick...

#8 Texas at #17 Texas Tech
Kirk: Tech Lee: Texas

#20 Georgia Tech at #4 Clemson
Kirk: Clem Lee: Clem

Chris: Now, let's turn to the huge one here in the Horseshoe today. The Buckeyes were able to win last week without star WR Lamaar Thomas and HB Mike Tellis, who was hurt at the beginning of the 2nd half. Well, both will be in uniform today. [crowd cheers] That's bad news for Penn State. However, the Lions have a chance to knock off Ohio State, and set up a three-way tie in the Big Ten. Also, a PSU win would really shake up the national picture. Guys, who wins today?

Kirk: Getting Thomas and Tellis back will help the Buckeyes a lot today. But it has really been the Ohio State defense that won the last week. This will not be a low scoring game. OSU QB Anthony Heffner can't throw 4 interceptions or the Buckeyes lose. Sadly, I've lost confidence and Heffner, and I think the Buckeyes fall today. [crowd boos loudly]

Lee: Kirk, I'm surprised. Two weeks in a row you've picked against your Buckeyes. Don't lose faith so fast. But you're right. PSU QB Evan McKinley will be the difference maker. Penn State wins a very close game. [Lee puts on the Nittany Lion headgear to a chorus of boos] Go Penn State! Go Nittany Lions!
