Oregon State surprised everybody on the recruiting trail this year as the Beavers finished with the 6th best recruiting class. Who says that you can't recruit elite talent to play in Corvallis? Because that is exactly what Mike Riley has been able to do. The Beavers landed two five-star prospects in CB John Biggers and DE Brandon Webb that should hopefully help Oregon State move on without DE Kevin Frahm and CB David Ross who will start their NFL careers soon. OSU also added the 2nd best TE in Adam Banks and added more receivers to a roster that is loaded at WR. Oregon State was able to steal WR David Baker from Big-12 country in Nebraska. There is a lot of talent on this roster however the Beavers were unable to land any big names on the offensive line so the glaring weakness for Oregon State was not addressed. Though Riley does think that C Chad Green and ATH Ray Marshall who is 6'8 and 305 pounds will have an immediate impact on the offensive line. Only time will tell if this class is as good as advertised.

I didn't know that about the walk-ons. Actually, I think I'm going to let the CPU do the recruiting for me this year. Having the 6th best class at Oregon State is kind of ridiculous. Hopefully, the CPU makes it more realistic.

You can't, The better your team gets the better the recruits get. After a 10-2 season, you will be expected to have a top 10 class.

Alright, if you really think so. I will continue to do the recruiting then. We almost had the top class and were the top class for a portion of the season. Mike Riley might end up being Mister February pretty soon at this rate.

I'll probably have a shot at Dexter Lee but I don't know about AJ Butler. He's not interested in Oregon State at all.

#25 Oregon State Season Preview

When we last left the Beavers, they had just won their second Sun Bowl in a row over Connecticut in dominating fashion. It was a season of highs and lows. The high was the huge win over Cal but the lows included a blowout loss to USC and then losing the Civil War. In many ways though, it was a fantastic year for Beaver Nation. Even though OSU was unable to make a BCS Bowl or even the Holiday Bowl, they did still finish 11-2 and ranked 14th at the end of the season. Now Oregon State will look to continue the success from last year with a senior QB, a senior HB, and the 6th rated recruiting class. The future is bright for Beaver Nation.

WSUpic7.jpg

Senior year for QB Bryan Rossner could be a big year.

If the Beavers are to have success this year, they will need to have consistency from senior QB Bryan Rossner. The five-star Hawaian QB has had brilliant games and terrible games. If Rossner can limit his turnovers, then the sky is the limit for this year's Oregon State team. Rossner looked terrific early last year until a disastrous game in Los Angeles versus USC. Rossner could be looking at a possible chance at a Heisman run and will want to improve his draft stock as he will likely be an NFL prospect in April.

ASUpic9.jpg

HB Marvin Quinn will look to stay healthy and have a good senior year.

Fellow senior HB Marvin Quinn will also look to improve his draft stock and he could very well be considered for Heisman by the end of the year. Quinn has had some awesome performances and then he is almost nonexistent the next game. He has been a model of inconsistency his entire career. On top of that, Quinn suffered from injuries last year. Oregon State will need Quinn to stay healthy and get that running game going.

However, both Rossner and Quinn could struggle because of a perceived weak offensive line. The Beavers will have only two upper-classmen. Both will serve on the right side as redshirt junior RT Jason Sparks and redshirt senior RG Grant Johnson will look to open up holes for Quinn to run through. Unfortunately, the rest of the offensive line consists of three under-classmen. Including starting true freshman C Chad Green. Sophomores LT Jason Rushing and LG Justin Smith will try to anchor the other side. Look for inconsistent play all season from this group. Especially on the left side. Good thing that Rossner is mobile because he will probably need to use his feet to buy time.

Calpic6-1.jpg

Will WR Brian Herring be the go-to guy?

If Rossner does have enough time to throw the ball he will have his choice of receivers to throw to. Gone is the leading receiver from last year in receptions, James Rodgers, but WR Brian Herring is back after a great redshirt sophomore year. Herring led the team with 8 touchdown receptions and has only improved from last year. But apparently Herring is not the favorite to be the No. 1 receiver as redshirt junior WR Alex Whitehead has had a fantastic spring and has gone from being 4th on the depth chart to 1st. Whitehead is extremely quick and has the ability to get off of press coverage. Look for Whitehead to come out of nowhere and be the leading receiver. It also looks like redshirt sophomore WR Bill Faaeteete has taken over the slot position from redshirt junior Marcus Sullivan. Sullivan is a better playmaker with the ball in his hands but Faaeteete is a much better possession receiver. The largest addition to the offense could be a true freshman in TE Adam Banks who will be a huge upgrade at the position over TE Pete Rich from last year. This could be a fantastic corps of receivers if Rossner can get them the ball.

Where does the OSU defensive line stand without DE Kevin Frahm's 19 sacks?

The defensive line should be very solid even with the loss of Lombardi winner DE Kevin Frahm who will prepare for his first NFL season after being drafted in the first round in April. The defensive line will be led by senior DE Brian Dailey but he could be overshadowed by the five-star prospect, true freshman DE Brandon Webb who looks outstanding so far. The center will be anchored by sophomore DT Lee King and redshirt junior DT Mark Crum. Oregon State was one of the best defenses against the run next year. Look for the Beavers to be just as stout as last season.

The Beavers did lose MLB Will Darkins to graduation but redshirt senior MLB Paul Jones will step right in. The linebacker crew should be better than last season with sophomore OLB Carlos Matthews and redshirt sophomore Cole Alexander getting a year starting under their belts last season. Alexander especially looks much improved and experienced from last season. This should be a very good front seven and there should not be an early season let down.

USCpic1-3.jpg

CB David Ross was tremendous. Will another DB step up?

The Beavers will also be without their top defensive backs from last season as the Thorpe winning CB David Ross is now playing on Sundays along with the leading tackler SS Cameron Collins. However, the Beavers seem to reload in the secondary every year and that is exactly what it looks like they have done this year. Oregon State probably would have been solid in the secondary without any additions but OSU added the 2nd best CB prospect in the nation in five-star true freshman CB John Biggers. Biggers is terrific in coverage but could struggle to bring down ball carriers. He will be joined by junior CB Mike Mayes and CB Amir White who are still fighting for that 2nd spot. With success of Ross and Collins last year it was easy to overlook FS Matt Arnold. Arnold had 5 interceptions last season including taking three of them back for touchdowns. Now a senior, he will be the leader of the secondary. The biggest question mark will be sophomore SS Courtney Smith who will try to take over for Collins. This should be another strong defense for the Beavers.

Chris: Well, College Football is back with a bang today. We have a fantastic game in week one as No. 7 Miami is in Columbus to take on No. 4 Ohio State. (Crowd cheers.) The Buckeyes ended their season by dominating Cal in the Rose Bowl while Miami was destroyed on their home field by Notre Dame. This has to be one of the better opening games to start a season in quite sometime. Don't forget Miami was able to win last season in Ann Arbor over an emerging Michigan team. I welcome in Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit. Guys, who do you like in this one?

Kirk: I have to go with Ohio State today. (Crowd cheers.) It is not because of my allegience to the Buckeyes but because of this crowd. (Crowd cheers more.) Ohio State and Miami both have great defenses but it will come down to who can make plays on offense. I know that OSU QB Anthony Heffner struggled at times last year but I expect to see him rebound from last year and have a breakout year. Watch out for OSU HB Mike Tellis also. I just don't see any playmakers for Miami and QB Taylor Cook does not scare me.

Lee: Kirk, we really need to quit having you make predictions when Ohio State is playing. But seriously, I'm so excited to get this season underway and we have some great matchups as you look further along the schedule. Now, back to his game, Buckeye QB Anthony Heffner threw 22 interceptions last year and will play against a very good defense today. The winner today will be an early favorite to make it to the BCS championship and I just don't see Heffner leading the way. Miami has a HB by the name of Ben Rogers. Watch him today because before you know it he could be gone for a touchdown. Rogers should have a big game as the Canes pull off another big win in Big Ten country. (Crowd boos as Lee puts on the Miami headgear.)

(4) Ohio State dominates (7) Miami 41-14
Miami-OhioState.jpg

Columbus, OH - The Buckeyes were shot out of a cannon on offense. Ohio State was on fire against a very good defense. OSU WR Lamaar Thomas was uncoverable as he caught eight receptions for a total of 193 yards and scored three touchdowns. One of which was a rushing touchdown. With outstanding receiver play from both WRs Thomas, and Patrick Harris, QB Anthony Heffner had a record-breaking perfomance. Heffner was 31 for 42 with three touchdown passes. Heffner had an astonishing 379 yards passing at halftime. Most of his success has to be attributed to WRs Thomas and Harris who made some highlight reel touchdown receptions, showing off some electrifying speed. This win clearly puts Ohio State as a favorite to win it all this year.

Chris: It's official. You've lost your mind Corso. Northwestern to beat Oklahoma? Well, we'll have to see who you think will win today. Last week, Lee could not have been more wrong as the Buckeyes took Miami out to the woodshed. Alright guys, Penn State has a chance to represent the Big Ten against the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. (Crowd cheers.) That's right, Paterno versus Saban. How long is Joe Paterno going to coach? Well, I guess that's a whole other conversation. What we do know is if Penn State was able to win today, it would really say a lot about how good the Big Ten is this year. Can Penn State pull this off?

Kirk: No, they can't. Maybe on a neutral field, but here in Tuscaloosa in front of these fans on the first game of the season. I just don't think so. I see Bama QB Star Jackson having a great year. Maybe even a Heisman year. (Crowd cheers.) Jackson missed half the season as Parquet filled in for him and led the Tide to the championship. How good could they be with Jackson leading the way? Alabama rolls today. (Crowd cheers.)

Lee: We've got the defending national champions here. They have a 15-game winning streak going. On the other side, we've got a terrific QB by the name of Evan McKinley. This Penn State QB looks tremendous and he has a fantastic group of receivers to throw to in Smart and Coleman. That's it. Give me that headgear. That's right. Ohio State's win over Miami has made me a believer of the Big Ten and that's why I'm going with the Nittany Lions. (Lee puts on the Lion headgear to a chorus of boos.) Go Penn State! Go Nittany Lions!

FCS Midwest at #24 Oregon State(Simulated)

Corvallis, OR - The Beavers kicked off the season hosting FCS Midwest at a half-empty Reser Stadium. The fans that were at the game saw a very unimpressive offensive performance by Oregon State against inferior competition. Beaver Nation suffered a huge scare when OSU QB Bryan Rossner scrambled for a first down but was hit hard in the open field. Rossner left a bit woozy and did not return. It was later reported that Rossner will be fine and should not miss any time.

However, it did give backup QB Ryan Katz a chance to show what he could do. Katz excelled but also showed inexperience as he threw a pick-six that would be the only score for FCS Midwest. Katz put the interception behind him and was able to throw four touchdown passes. He would hook up with WR Brian Herring twice in the end zone and also threw a touchdown pass to WRs Bill Faaeteete and Alex Whitehead. Katz even ran in a touchdown himself for a total of five touchdowns on the day. Although Katz would finish with three interceptions but it could not be fully attributed to the QB as his offensive line gave him little time to throw the ball.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn looked like his same old self as he ran for 90 yards and a touchdown but left with a sprained ankle, giving HB Jacquizz Rodgers some playing time. Quinn is already succumbing to injuries and this is hopefully not a sign of things to come for Oregon State. It is not a serious injury and it should not force Quinn to miss any games.

The offense may have looked inconsistent but the defense looked fantastic. The defense pitched a shutout as FCS Midwest was completely overmatched and unable to score at all. OSU DT Lee King was disrupting plays as he had two sacks and four tackles for loss. The defense clearly looks like the strength of this team. Oregon State had no trouble even though they did not play their best game defeating FCS Midwest 45-7. The competition should move up quite a lot next week as the Beavers will travel to Indiana to play Purdue. The Purdue game did not seem to be anything more than a first road game of the season but with Purdue winning the stunning upset over No. 1 Notre Dame, the game looks much more intriguing. It could be a tough early test for Oregon State.

QB Katz: 11-15, 129 yds, 4 td, 3 int, rush td
HB Quinn: 13 car, 90 yds, td, rec, 30 yds
WR Herring: 6 rec, 23 yds, 2 td

(10) Penn State upsets (2) Alabama 31-14
PSU-Bama.jpg

Tuscaloosa, AL - The defending champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide just could not get anything going on offense against a very tough Penn State defense. Neither team looked particularly sharp in the first half as Penn State had a 7-0 lead at halftime. Both Bama coach Nick Saban and PSU coach Joe Paterno decided to forego easy field goals on 4th and short situations that backfired every time. In the second half PSU FS David Keisling made the biggest play of the game when he made a spectacualr one-handed interception, then took it back for six to put PSU up 14-0. Alabama would not even score until the 4th quarter when Bama HB Will White broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run but the Tide was down 21-7. Alabama would make it a game though with no help from their kicker as he went 0 for 3 on the day but the Tide would get within ten points when they cut the lead to 24-14. Then Bama recovered the onside kick. Only to give the ball back on downs. Penn State put the game away for good with under a minute left when PSU HB Malcolm Young finally broke through a very stout Bama defense for a 73-yard touchdown run as Penn State won a stunning upset over No. 2 Alabama 31-14.

I need some recruiting tips because I'm about to start a lowest-tier school dynasty. I was thinking of doing ULM or ULL like I'd done before, but I want to play in a Conference Championship Game (I haven't done that, before). So, I figure I'll do a C-USA school; in walks UAB, another terrible school (and in a two-division conference, to boot).

So, you got any suggestions? I need to build them up to atleast make them an in-conference competitor, if nothing else...

Btw, what sort of offense do you think I should run? I'm asking you, only... I don't care what the other people on this particular thread have to say so I don't want to hear their responses.

PS-Thanks for making the CAPs. I like the way my guy looks. Not at all like me, but cool non the less.

Chris: Interesting...you disagree on whether Miami will lose its fourth game in a row if you include the Orange Bowl loss to Notre Dame at the end of last year. Well, after upset Saturday last week with both Notre Dame and Alabama falling to Big Ten teams, we have an SEC rivalry game here in Knoxville where Florida takes on Tennessee. (Crowd goes wild.) With Alabama already stumbling, the door looks open for another SEC team to take over as the favorite to win the conference. Florida was the major dynasty going as last season opened but it was not to be for the Gators last year. The Vols are looking to take that next step and get back into the national spotlight. Guys, who wins today?

Kirk: This should be a fantastic game and it will probably come down to the end. That being said, I really like Florida today...(Crowd boos fiercely.) I like Florida because of redshirt sophomore HB Ken Marshall who is a really explosive tailback. Look for Urban Meyer to get him the ball early and often. The matchup to look for is Marshall versus the Vols LBs. Tennessee's LBs might be the best in the country but I just don't see Tennessee having much success on offense.

Lee: Kirk, I think you're underestimating Tennessee. That being said, Florida is a terrific football team. However, I don't see Marshall having a great game at all. Kirk already said why. Tennessee's defense is one of the best in the nation. Might even be the best. (Crowd cheers.) We'll find out today. With these crazy fans behind them, I have to pick...(Lee puts on the Smokey headgear as the crowd goes nuts.) Go Tennessee! Go Vols!
