Tucson, AZ - Now the Beavers have moved into the top five. Many of the pundits are attibuting Oregon State's success to the fact that the Pac-10 is a weak conference. So after the Beavers beat a terrible Washington team led by former USC offensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin, the Beavers now face another former USC offensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisian, who leads an even more horrible Arizona squad. The Wildcats' lone win came last week against Stanford who is not very good either. However, would Oregon State be looking ahead to next week when USC comes to Corvallis for what might be the game of the week next weekend?

Arizona is already at a disadvantage but injuries have plagued the Wildcats as they would be down to their third-string HB, redshirt sophomore Barrett Waters. OSU coach Mike Riley hinted during the week that QB Bryan Rossner could have a big game against Arizona's secondary and that he would open the playbook up for Rossner to pass the ball a bit more.

The Wildcats were able to get a single first down before being forced to punt on their opening possession. On the punt OSU punt returner Marvin Quinn was able to make a nice return of 43 yards to the Arz 33-yard line. OSU QB Bryan Rossner would quickly get the team into the red zone where HB Marvin Quinn muscled through for a 1-yard touchdown run to quickly give Oregon State a 7-0 lead.

It did not look like Oregon State was looking past Arizona at all early on as the Wildcats were forced to punt after a three and out. Rossner looked tremendous for the Beavers, hitting receivers in stride. Finally, Rossner would hit WR Brian Herring on a slant in the end zone from 13 yards out to put the Beavers up 14-0.

Again, Arizona had nothing on offense but a three and out. Oregon State looked on the verge of scoring again as the 1st quarter came to an end. However, on 3rd and goal, Rossner was sacked and fumbled in the process of being thrown down where the Wildcats recovered the ball to finally stop the OSU offense. Unfortunately, Arizona squandered the momentum gained when Arz QB Brooks Peters threw an egregious pass into coverage that OSU MLB Paul Jones easily intercepted. Oregon State would waste no time as Rossner would roll out to his left and find WR Brian Herring again for a 6-yard touchdown to put the Beavers up 21-0.

And yet again the Widcats punted after a three and out. This time Rossner would throw to HB Marvin Quinn in the flat where the tailback easily beat the defense to the end zone on a 17-yard touchdown reception to put the Beavers up big 28-0.

The Wildcats continued to struggle on offense with another three and out. Rossner would lead a brilliant drive at the end of the half, finally throwing to true freshman TE Adam Banks who made quite a diving catch for a big guy in the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown reception to make it 35-0 Oregon State.

The half would come to an end with an OSU CB Mike Mayes interception. The Wildcat fans were leaving the stadium in droves and anybody that was still watching this game on FSN should have turned to either the Georgia Tech-Clemson game or the Penn State-Ohio State game that were much more competitive.

Oregon State continued right where they left off as Rossner threw to WR Brian Herring on a short crossing route which Herring found a whole lot of grass, then broke a tackle in front of the end zone, and housed it for a 38-yard touchdown. It was Herring's 3rd touchdown of the game and it put the Beavers up 42-0.

Arizona would be forced to punt after two OSU sacks on Peters. On the ensuing possession, OSU HB Marvin Quinn would find some room to the outside but was brought down hard along the sideline where he was writhing on the ground in pain. Quinn would be forced to leave with a shoulder injury that looked like it could be serious.

So in came HB Jacquizz Rodgers where he was able to get to the outside on a toss and beat the defense to the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown run as the rout was on. Oregon State was now up 49-0. For the first time, Oregon State looked like a top five team.

The Wildcats finally did something on offense as they made it into OSU territory but were forced to settle for a 54-yard field goal just to get on the scoreboard to make it 49-3. However, it would not take Oregon State long to respond as OSU kick returner Brian Herring, in for the injured Marvin Quinn on the kickoff, was able to get near the sideline, make two defenders miss, and was off to the races where he was able to house it on an 87-yard kick return to add another OSU touchdown to make it 56-3 Oregon State. The kick return would give Herring his 4th touchdown of the game.

Highlight​

OSU CB Matt McDaniel would pick off Arz QB Brooks Peters on the ensuing possession, and it would bring the 3rd quarter to an end. It would not be long before the Beavers found the end zone again when HB#37 scored on a 1-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 63-3. That would be the final play for the OSU starters but OSU QB Ryan Katz would get his own touchdown pass in the final minutes when he hit WR#80 for a 40-yard touchdown as the Beavers obliterated Arizona 70-3. Hopefully, the Beavers can bring some of that over to next week against the Trojans.

Columbus, OH - This major Big Ten game got off to a quick start when on the first play from scrimmage, OSU QB Anthony Heffner hooked up with WR Patrick Harris who was lit up by PSU CB Stephen Carter to force a fumble that was returned back for a Nittany Lion touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, OSU WR Lamaar Thomas wasted no time making an impact as he found a seam and took it to the house to make it 7-7 with under a minute ticked off the game clock.

Ohio State dominated the 1st half in every facet of the game. The Buckeye defense was relentless, but PSU QB Evan McKinley did not make a mistake. The same can not be said for Heffner, who would hurt his team with a costly interception at the end of the half. McKinley took advantage, throwing a touchdown to TE Stanley Smith to make it 17-14 despite the Buckeyes dominating the first half.

Penn State would tie the game on a 54-yard field goal. Ohio State missed two field goals and PSU QB Evan McKinley would eventually hook up with WR Shawn Coleman for a 24-yard touchdown to give the Lions a 24-17 lead. Buckeye coach Jim Tressell would make a controversial decision late in the 4th quarter, going for it on 4th and 2 from their own 46-yard line where HB Mike Tellis was stuffed by the PSU defense. It would set up a Nittany Lion 31-yard field goal attempt. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, the kick was hooked wide left. Ohio State would have one last chance with under two minutes left in the game. Unfortunately for Ohio State, Heffner would throw his third interception as PSU OLB Michael Mauti came up with the interception, his second of the game to knock off the undefeated Buckeyes.

Chris: We are coming to you live from Corvallis, Oregon. [crowd cheers] This is the first time the Gameday crew has been to the campus of Oregon State University where the Beavers host the Trojans of Southern Cal. There really could not be more on the line for both teams. The winner will be the favorite to win the conference and make a run at the BCS championship in Miami. Oregon State is coming off of a week where they obliterated a very weak Arizona team 70-3. Though many believe the reason for the Beavers' success can be attributed to the fact that the Pac-10 is really weak this year. [crowd boos] This will be the Beavers' opportunity to show the rest of the nation that they are for real.

Unfortunately, both teams come in banged up as we are past the midway point of the season. USC is still without their best LBs, ROLB#50 and MLB Michael Hall. Oregon State lost their prized CB John Biggers for the season and last week HB Marvin Quinn went down with a shoulder injury. We turn to Erin Andrews for more on Quinn's status. Erin...

Erin Thanks Chris. We are being told that Quinn has a torn shoulder and will likely be out a minimum of 10 weeks. The Beavers will have to make do with HB Jacquizz Rodgers to carry the load. Remember guys, Rodgers was forced to play in the Cal game last year and did a great job when Oregon State got their signature win last season over the Golden Bears. Chris, back to you.

Chris: Thank you Erin. That is not good news for the Beavers. But Erin hinted at the fact that Rodgers is no slouch either.

Kirk: That's right Chris. Jacquizz Rodgers is a great back in his own right. He may even see some time at the next level, just as Quinn will also. Honestly, I'm not sure it will matter who is running back there for Oregon State. Going against this Trojan defense is no easy task. Especially on the ground. USC has not only the top defense in the country but also has the best rush defense in the nation. However, Oregon State brings in the 2nd best defense and 2nd best rush defense. So I don't see either OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers or USC HB Curtis McNeal having a great day today. It will come down to the QBs. OSU QB Bryan Rossner is coming off a career game, throwing five touchdowns. His receivers are some of the most underrated players. WRs Whitehead and Herring are really playing fantastic. I think they both have big games today as the Beavers pull it off. [crowd goes nuts]

Lee: Wow Kirk. You're going with the Beavs. USC has better athletes at every position and really should blow them out of the water just like last year. The difference is this year it is here in Corvallis. [crowd cheers] And how can I go against these great fans? Give me the Beavers! Corvallis, OR - Sold out Reser Stadium had an electric atmosphere as this one got underway. Corvallis and Beaver Nation were psyched all week for the showdown today to get started. Two top five Pac-10 teams competing for the conference title and possibly a national championship. Unfortunately, Oregon State learned earlier that HB Marvin Quinn had a torn shoulder and would not be able to play for 10 weeks. That would leave HB Jacquizz Rodgers to carry the load against the best defense in the nation. OSU QB Bryan Rossner and WR Brian Herring would look to continue where they left off last week but faced a daunting task scoring against the Men of Troy. For a mid November game, one could not ask for better weather conditions as it was a partly cloudy day with a semi-cold 47 degree temperature in the Willamette Valley.

It was apparent right from the start that the Beaver fans would be a factor as Reser Stadium was rocking as USC returned the opening kickoff. The hostile crowd seemed to have USC QB Xavier Miller rattled as he threw a pass toward the sideline where his receiver went one way and the ball went the other as OSU CB Mike Mayes made one of the easiest interceptions of his career to further fuel the crowd. However, it was clear that the Oregon State offense was going to have a tough time scoring as the Beavers were only left to settle for a 38-yard field goal off the turnover to put Oregon State in front 3-0.

The crowd noise continued to be a factor for the Trojans on their next possession as they were forced to punt after a three and out. However, some of the momentum was lost when OSU punt returner Alex Whitehead was lit up and dropped the ball to the turf where USC recovered.

Fortunately, Oregon State's defense was able to stop USC from getting a single first down. USC was forced to punt but Pete Carroll decided to fake the punt and actually converted. However, there was a holding penalty on the play so USC ened up punting the ball anyway. Oregon State would be unable to get anything going on their possession as OSU QB Bryan Rossner was sacked. The Beavers were getting ready to punt the ball back to the Trojans as an uneventful 1st quarter came to an end.

On USC's next possession, on 3rd and 1, QB Xavier Miller threw deep to is star WR Jermaine Clark who made a spectacular catch, receiving the ball at the highest point before being taken out low and upended to the ground, still holding on to the ball. The play gave the Trojans some life on offense. Miller would hit TE Rhett Ellison to get into the red zone. Then Miller would throw one up in the back of the end zone where WR Jermaine Clark leaped up to make another great catch for a 6-yard touchdown to put USC on top 7-3.

On the ensuing drive, Oregon State, having trouble passing the ball against USC decided to try and get HB Jacquizz Rodgers going on two consecutive plays for a total of eight yards. On 3rd and 2, USC brought a big blitz. Rossner playfaked to Rodgers, felt the pressure and threw to WR Brian Herring on a crossing route who was covered by a LB. Herring made the catch as Reser Stadium erupted because Herring was all alone and easily housed it for a 64-yard touchdown to put Oregon State back on top 10-7.

Highlight​

USC, on their next possession seemed to get more balance in the offense as HB Curtis McNeal started to get featured a bit more. The Trojans would get about to the OSU 20-yard line where Miller was under pressure and just threw it away into the turf to as the Beaver defense held. USC attempted a 37-yard field goal but the ball hit the crossbar on a pathetic kick.

As the first half was nearing a close, the Beavers had one more drive left in them. Rossner threw some nice passes to WR Bill Faaeteete to get into the red zone, but USC held at the 5-yard line as the Beavers settled for a 22-yard field goal to go ahead 13-7. The Trojans would attemp a last-minute drive of their own but Miller was picked off by OSU SS Courtney Smith. The Beavers tried a hail mary at the end of the first half but Rossner's deep pass was knocked to the turf in the end zone as we went to halftime with the Beavers ahead 13-7.

It was looking like the Beavers might be able to pull it off and anybody watching the game could sense that this was going to be a great finish. The Beavers came out with their opening possession and Rossner was sacked on the first play, leading to an OSU three and out. However, it was not all bad. The terrific punter Nick Carpenter was again able to make a fantastic punt, pinning USC at their own 1-yard line. On the next play, USC QB Xavier Miller and HB Curtis McNeal were unable to make an exchange of the handoff and Miller tried to run out of the end zone but OSU MLB Paul Jones and CB Amir White were there to bring him down for a safety as Reser roared. The safety would give the Beavers a 15-7 lead and the ball.

All of the momentum was firmly in the hands of the Beavers and with the crowd behind them, it looked like Oregon State was about to take command. Unfortunately, the Beavers were unable to get a first down when TE Adam Banks was tackled just short of the first down to force an OSU punt. USC got alittle something going on offense but the Trojans were forced to punt from midfield. This was becoming a battle of field position. That is when USC was able to pin the Beavers at their own 1-yard line not because of a great punt but OSU punt returner Alex Whitehead made a horrendous mistake, deciding inexplicably to catch the ball at the 1-yard line. On top of that, Whitehead dropped the ball, was able to pick it up but was tackled right at the 1-yard line. It would lead to an OSU punt from their own end zone to the fantastic returner Jermaine Clark, who was able to return it to the OSU 25-yard line.

However, the Oregon State defense came up big again, forcing the Trojans to a 35-yard field goal which was kicked no good. The Beavers had dodged a bullet. The Beavers would come up just shy of the first down on the ensuing possession again as Rodgers was tackled just inches short of the marker. The Beavers were forced to punt from midfield. USC had the ball at their own 20-yard line as the 3rd quarter came to an end with Oregon State still out in front.

One just got the feeling that the Beavers would not be able to hold the Trojans for much longer as USC again moved the ball well down the field, getting close to the red zone. Miller would throw it up to HB#20 just shy of the end zone but the tailback dropped the ball. That would lead to another USC field goal attempt. This time from 45 yards out and again, it was no good as it fell short of the cross bar. The Trojans might want to invest some time in recruiting a kicker as their kicker has a 41 overall rating.

On the enusing possession for the Beavers there was a sense of urgency as it just felt like 15-7 would not be enough of a lead. Rossner would be able to hit Herring on a deep crossing route to convert on 3rd and 7 but there was a holding penalty on the play. The Beavers could not convert on 3rd and 17, so they were forced to punt it back to the dangerous Trojans.

How much longer could the OSU defense hold the USC offense? The answer came when USC HB#20 was able to break loose, getting to the outside, spinning past a tackle, and outrunning the OSU defense to the endzone for a 33-yard touchdown to bring Reser Stadium to dead silence.

Highlight​

It was okay for the Beavers because USC still needed to score on the 2-point conversion to tie the game. USC HB Curtis McNeal took the hand off, and ran right up the gut, easily getting into the end zone to tie the game 15-15 as the USC fight song played in the background.

With only 3:13 left in regulation, the Beavers realized that they needed to put a drive together as the Trojans had all of the momentum now. Unfortunately, Rossner would be sacked on 2nd down. Then on 3rd down, Rossner tried to hit Whitehead over the middle where the ball was almost intercepted. Three and out and the Beavers had to punt. Reser Stadium was getting nervous. USC returner Jermaine Clark returned the punt to midfield and the Trojans had 2:04 left to go.

With 1:33 remaining Miller threw to TE Rhett Ellison in the flat where next year's top NFL TE draft choice broke a tackle by OSU SS Courtney Smith, next ran over CB Allen Smith, then juked past CB Mike Mayes, and dragged CB Amir White into the end zone to stun Reser Stadium on the amazing 28-yard touchdown reception right in front of the USC section to put USC on top 22-15 with only 1:24 left to go in the game.

Highlight​

The Beavers would likely only have this one last possession to try and tie it up. Brian Herring returned the kickoff to the OSU 31-yard line with 1:19 left. The opening play of the drive did not start off well as Rossner was sacked for the 4th time of the game. Though on the next play, Rossner hit WR Bill Faaeteete to get the Beavers to the OSU 44-yard line with :46 left, where Mike Riley called timeout.

Rossner would be unable to find anybody open and was forced to dump it off to TE Adam Banks for a short gain in the middle of the field. Then disaster occurred as USC brought the heat, and SS Jason Edwards brought Rossner down for the 5th USC sack. Oregon State was forced to call timeout with :26 left and a 3rd and 9 facing them at their own 45-yard line.

Rossner would try to connect with HB Jacquizz Rodgers in the flat where it was almost picked off. This was it. It was 4th and 9 with only :22 left where Rossner threw to an open WR Brian Herring on a short post. Herring was forced to come back for the ball to make the catch which put him short of the 1st down line. Herring tried to spin away from the tackle but was brought down short of the first down line. The Trojans had stopped OSU and all they needed to do was to kneel on the ball twice to escape from Corvallis with a win. Oregon State loses a heartbreaking cliff-hanger 22-15.

#5 ESPN instant classic. That play that the USC TE made made my jaw drop. I was jumping out of my seat with joy though when Herring scored that touchdown to give us the lead. We just couldn't make enough plays on offense. Not to mention if USC could kick a freakin' field goal...

That's pretty much what I said when he didn't get the 1st down. I think it was more Rossner's fault though. I think he underthrew him and forced Herring to come back for the ball. If I waited longer to throw it though I'd probably be sacked.

Yeah, it was a close game and we actually had the lead until the middle of the 4th quarter. Scoring against that defense proved to be quite a task especially since we haven't been tested all season against a good team. Also, not having Quinn was probably a factor.

Corvallis, OR - Oregon State had a 15-7 lead until the middle of the 4th quarter when USC HB#20 was able to break loose for a 33-yard touchdown run. Then USC HB Curtis McNeal was able to run right up the gut to get in on the 2-pt conversion to tie the game 15-15. On the Trojans' next possession, USC QB Xavier Miller threw into the flat to TE Rhett Ellison who broke a tackle, ran over another defender, juked past another, and dragged the last defender into the end zone on a 28-yard touchdown reception to give the Trojans a 22-15 lead. Oregon State had one last chance but on 4th down OSU QB Bryan Rossner threw to WR Brian Herring but was tackled just short of the first down as the Trojans escaped Corvallis with a close comeback victory.

Erin: That was a great game coach. You guys seemed to be muddying around in the water for most of the game on offense, then everything clicked. What happened?

Pete: Whooo! That was a great game! This is what I love about college football! That play Rhett made was amazing! I'm sorry. What was the question Erin?

Erin: Oh...coach, why were you guys able to turn it on in the 4th quarter when you were unable to get anything on offense for the entire game.

Pete: You have to give Mike Riley and that Oregon State defense a lot of credit. They played their hearts out today just like my guys. I think they just got tired as we were able to get a running game going and some long drives that kept them on the field. It was only a matter of time before either Curtis or HB#20 would be able to break one.

Erin: Your defense was able to hold OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers to only 20 yards on the ground. How is it that you're able to shut down Oregon State's run game two years in a row?

Pete: I give all the credit to these kids and our coaching staff. They earned it on the field today. This is a really good Beaver team and to come in here and shut down this offense...I'm really proud of these guys. I mean the Beavs only scored on that playaction pass to Herring right? Besides that, we played just about flawless.

Erin: Why were you unable to make any field goals? Don't you think it is time to spend some time recruiting a kicker?

Pete: He was definitely rattled by this crowd today. I love coming here because we know the fans are going to give everything they got. It is a great atmosphere to play in but I do think it affected our kicker today. As far as recruiting, we'll evaluate that in the offseason.

Erin: Many say that the Pac-10 is a weak conference. What do you have to say to the pundits?

Pete: The Pac-10 is ridiculously hard to get through unscathed. If this game doesn't prove that, then I don't know what will.

Erin: Are you thinking this team could get to the BCS championship?

Pete: We go in every year with the goal to win the Pac-10, taking them one game at a time. Other than that, we leave the rest to you guys to decide where we go in the post season.

Chris: We have good ACC matchup between two undefeated teams as Florida State hosts Clemson. Actually, there are three undefeated ACC teams as Virginia Tech is also undefeated. This will be an important factor in help deciding who will be in the BCS championship as we are getting closer and closer to that point. Well, last week we also witnessed two undefeated teams out west. And what a game it was. USC was able to pull it out in the end over the Beavers in Corvallis to escape still undefeated. Now, it will be Arizona State that will be in Corvallis today, so the Beavers will have another test today. How will this one play out?

Kirk: I was really surprised at how well the Beavers played defense against USC. They held them right up to the end. However, the thing that really stood out for me is that the Pac-10 looks way behind some of the other BCS conferences. That being said, Oregon State should rebound with a convincing win over the Sun Devils today. Rossner has really looked good the last few weeks.

Lee: Kirk, I totally 100% agree with you. Arizona State might make it closer than the experts think, but Oregon State wins today.

Chris: Come on guys. You're barely earning your pay today. You've picked the same on all of the major games today. Maybe it will a little different for this big one here in Tallahassee today. [crowd cheers] It looks like there might be a new top conference on the block. The ACC is looking mighty strong thus far. Florida State has been able to stay undefeated despite losing their top wideout, Jeff Williams, who has been out since week 5, when he partially tore his ACL. Now it looks like he might be back today. Erin, you have a report on the 'Noles' injury status?

Erin: I sure do Chris. It does appear that FSU WR Jeff Williams will be able to play today. FSU QB Joe Finnerty is really looking forward to having his favorite target and seeing their captain in the huddle to lead the team. As for FSU OLB Nigel Bradham, he is listed as questionable to start as he is still bothered by that pulled groin. Guys...back to you.

Chris: Well, that is some huge news for Florida State to get back WR Jeff Williams. [crowd cheers] How does that impact the game?

Kirk: That is huge for the 'Noles. FSU QB Joe Finnerty has looked pretty good despite not having his top wideout as he has thrown 23 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. WIth Williams back in lineup, he should have a really great game. I think that Florida State will have a really dynamic offense today, especially with the way FSU HB Barry Horn has been playing of late. [view switches to a "Horn for Heisman" sign] The 'Noles eek out a close one today. [crowd cheers]

Lee: Not so fast sweetheart! Clemson might have the best QB in the nation. He will be on of the top picks in the next draft. Clem QB Kyle Parker has only thrown three interceptions and has a total of 29 touchdowns scored. That is amazing. This guy has it all. He can run. He is extremely smart. He has a great arm and his accurate. Kirk, what else could you want out of your QB? Plus, he has one of the Heisman watch list guys in his backfield, HB Scott Thomas. The Tigers have the highest scoring offense in the nation. But wait...the Seminoles have a terrific defense. Especially that defensive line and those safeties are fantastic. This is going to be a close one. [Lee pulls out a Seminole head-dress and starts doing the tomahawk chop and the warchant as the crowd cheers and does the warchant with him.] Go 'Noles!

[size=+2]#18 Arizona State (6-2) at #9 Oregon State (7-1)[/size]

Corvallis, OR - Oregon State can not hang their heads after last week's close loss to USC, because now a very good Arizona State team comes into Corvallis. The Sun Devils only two losses were to USC and Wisconsin so this would be another tough game as Oregon State has moved into the meat of the schedule. Apparently, Oregon State never travels to Sun Devil Stadium because this is the 5th year in a row that these two teams have met at Reser Stadium. Last year's game was a triple overtime thriller that ended when OSU HB Marvin Quinn scored on a rushing touchdown to give the Beavers the win. Of course, Quinn will not be in the game as he is still out with his injury. Both the Beavers and the Sun Devils are fighting for that 2nd or 3rd spot in the Pac-10 which is becoming very competitive as USC is running away with it. If the Beavers want to give themselves a chance at the conference championship, they would have to win today. Another loss, and it is not that unlikely that the Beavers could wind up in the Sun Bowl for the third straight year. The weather would be a factor today as the Northwest continues to see an even more wet season than normal, as it was 33 degrees with heavy showers.

Both teams traded punts on their opening possessions, but on Oregon State's next possession, QB Bryan Rossner tried to connect with TE Adam Banks on a short, corssing route, but ASU MLB Shelly Lyons made a good jump on the ball to intercept it. Then, Lyons proceeded to take it all the way back where Rossner tried to tackle him but the athletic linebacker shrugged him off for a Sun Devil pick-six to give Arizona State the lead 7-0.

This turned into a really ugly first half as neither team seemed to have anything going. It may have been the rain, but it would still only be 7-0 ASU at the end of the 1st quarter. The Sun Devils had already accumulated three sacks against Rossner, which was forcing the Beavers into 3rd and long situations. ASU coach Dennis Erickson would attempt to break the gridlock when he decided to go for it on 4th and 3 from the OSU 43-yard line where ASU HB Paul Jenkins was stuffed.

It appeared that the stop might spark something on offense for Oregon State. But when the Sun Devils got their 4th sack, it would lead to another OSU three and out. It would get worse as on the next OSU possession, Rossner would throw to WR Alex Whitehead but the ball was thrown badly behind for an easy ASU interception. Fortunately, the OSU defense was playing well enough to force ASU to punt after their own three and out. Hopefully, at this point viewers would have turned to the Texas Tech-Oklahoma game or the USC-Stanford game because this one was turning into a snoozer.

Not surprisingly, the OSU offensive line was called for a holding call, setting up a 3rd and 20 where Rossner actually hit WR Brian Herring for an 18-yard gain but short of the 1st down. So it was another three and out. ASU QB Samson Szakacsy would make his first mistake of the game when OSU SS Cortney Smith was able to pick him off and return it all the way to the ASU 3-yard line. However, the Sun Devils would stuff OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers. Then Rossner would be sacked for the 5th time, leading to a 32-yard field goal to put the Beavers on the board, down 7-3.

ASU QB Samson Szakacsy would put his mistake behind him and lead the Sun Devils right down the field at the end of the half to get in range for a 35-yard field goal attempt but the kick was hooked left to make it a riveting 7-3 game at halftime.

Arizona State would get a spark to start the 2nd half when the opening kick return was taken all the way to the OSU 47-yard line by WR Nick Seals. QB Samson Szakacsy would continue where he left off, leading his team into the red zone, and then hitting true freshman TE Andy Horn in the flat for a 6-yard touchdown. However, the XP was missed so the Sun Devils were only up 13-13.

The Beavers finally woke up the crowd when Rossner playfaked to the ineffective HB Jacquizz Rodgers, then threw to WR Brian Herring on a comeback, where Herring made the catch. Then broke a couple tackles for a big 36-yard gain to wake up the offense and the crowd.

With the big gain, Rossner was able to get the Beavers into the red zone, but HB Jacquizz Rodgers was unable to get anyting on the ground. As a result, Rossner took it in himself on a QB sneak from the 1-yard line to make it 13-10 ASU.

However, ASU QB Samson Szakacsy put another drive together, and finished it off with a strike to WR Gerell Robinson for an 11-yard touchdown to put the Sun Devils ahead 20-10.

On the ensuing kickoff, Brian Herring was brought to the ground where the ball came out and the Sun Devils recovered the fumble. It looked like on the replay that Herring was down but the play was never reviewed.

As a result, the Sun Devils were given great field position. On the next play ASU HB Paul Jenkins got to the outside for a 22-yard gain to put the Sun Devils at the OSU 4-yard line. However, the opportunity was squandered when Szakacsy threw one up into coverage where OSU CB Mike Mayes came down with the interception in the end zone to end the 3rd quarter.

Unfortunately, Oregon State was unable to move the ball at all and Arizona State was given good field position again with a nice return. The Sun Devils would be right back in business in the red zone in no time where Szakacsy threw to an eligible offensive lineman in the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown to put the Sun Devils ahead 27-10.

On the next drive for the Beavers, Rossner would be sacked for the 6th time. This was really a pathetic performance by the OSU offensive line as ASU was man-handling them. However, Rossner would hit WR Alex Whitehead to convert a 1st down which was the first of many as the Beavers got themselves into the red zone. Finally, OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers was able to get in the end zone by running up the gut where a big hole opened up for a 1-yard touchdown to make it a ten point game, 27-17 ASU.

It looked like the Beavers finally found there rhythm but was it too little, too late? Oregon State attempted an onside kick but the Sun Devils recovered. But they did not take too much time off the clock and were forced to attempt a 48-yard field goal that was drilled through the uprights to increase the ASU lead to 30-17.

The Beavers would waste little time on their next possession as Rossner threw to Herring running a short crossing pattern where Herring made a defender miss. The crowd roared as Herring was off to the races to house it for a 50-yard touchdown. Suddenly, the Beavs were only down 30-24.

Highlight​

OSU head coach Mike Riley had a decision to make with :44 on the clock of whether to do an onside kick or rely on defense and timeouts to get the ball back. Riley decided to attempt an onside kick which failed when ASU recovered. The Beavers' defense actually stopped ASU on three consecutive plays so the Sun Devils attempted a 51-yard field goal to try and put the game away. The snap was good. The hold was good and ASU kicker Golston knocked it through the uprights to put the game away as the Sun Devils took a 33-24 lead.

Rossner would throw a bomb up in desperation which Herring actually came down with but with no timeouts, the offense could not get set fast enough to spike the ball. Arizona State hangs on to win in Corvallis 33-24. It will not get any easier for the Beavers next week, as they take on a one-loss UCLA team in Pasadena.
