Legitimate newspaper? Nada. I work freelance for the local rag and I'm lucky to get that. Luckily, I don't have to do that for a living and am well off working elsewhere. I do it A) to keep my skills sharp B) I actually enjoy sports writing.

A few of my buddies that were able to get into sports media make magic beans for money. Love their job, but if they don't have a significant other that makes bread, they live at home or in an efficiency.

Definitely wasn't wise getting a journalism degree...but at the time when I started, the business was booming. Took a sharp downturn as soon as I got my degree. Who woulda thunk it?

Now, I gotta go back to school to get something a bit more useful while I'm still young and able to while I have a really good job. Sucks, but it is, what it is.

I think you're probably a little older than me but we are in the same boat pretty much. I graduated in 08, basically the culmination point of print media dying. Luckily I steered myself more towards the broadcast side of journalism, and started teaching myself more and more about the digital medium so I was eventually able to and was able to find a solid job with an online outlet.

It sucked not having a job for 2 years after graduation, but now that I'm "in" so to speak, I could never imagine myself enjoying anything else. Enjoying what you do really is worth more than money, provided you are making enough to at least keep your lights on and food on the table. I went through 2 years of not having a dime post graduation, and it sucked. No job prospects, etc. But that two years of hell was all worth it when I get to get up every day and do something fulfilling and enjoyable.

If you are getting into journalism right now, you have to REALLY love it, and you have to have a high tolerance for ramen noodles.

True. Just watch out for the guys on message boards who get free shit. EA has become pretty good at blurring the line between community and quasi-EA employee. OS is one of those sites. They trade inside information and OS clamps down hard on negative opinion.
