movie is not nearly as good as you guys make it out to be. saw that ending coming a MILE away. couldnt hold memento's jock. i am massively disappointed. i didnt have any trouble following the plot, i saw it completely sober, and felt like it was just another action flick. 6/10 only cuz i saw it in a nice theatre full of people (who laughed/booed the ending)

So you guessed the ending, cool. Doesn't diminish the movie.

If you didn't think it was as good as Memento, that's also cool, as Memento is one of the greatest films of the last 20 years and Nolan's greatest to date. So I don't think that diminishes the movie at all, either.

If you thought it was just another action flick though, I don't know what to tell you. I appreciated that it was an original story and that the action was relatively unique (unless every other action movie you see has 4 separate climactic scenes happening at the exact same time within each other).

The ending is almost irrelevant in this movie, the movie was there for ideas and for mindfucks. If an ending to a movie/book are important enough to the plot, they'll have a resolution.

i have an idea that it might have been all of a dream, or maybe just a movie mistake.


When the chemist is on the highway that's raised, he puts the music on to signal that a kick is coming, he then drives the van off the bridge, everyone senses the kick, but they cant do anything because the job isnt done. Cobb mentions the kick, then Ellen's character asks how much time is left, so Cobb says until the van hits the water, so about 20 minutes.

How does he now the Van is about to hit water? Unless its his dream, there is no way he could have known the chemist would have driven into a highway.

This is the first movie possibly ever where after seeing it, I've proclaimed it to be close to Fight Club's level of greatness.

I finally decided on what I believe happened.

 

Leo and his wife are stuck in dreams, Leo realizes this and has them kill themselves with the train, but when they died they didn't wake up, they just went into a deeper layer (just like when Saito died, he went to a deeper layer) In this deeper layer Mal begins to realize they are dreaming still so she tries to get them both to jump, but Leo believes this is reality. After her death he starts getting chased by annoyonomous "agents", he can travel to any place he needs to go with ease, and meets Saito(his own projection) who gives him the idea that he can go home to his kids(Leos reality), then that's when Leo and his team (all his own projections) go deep inside LEOs own mind and when they finally get Fischer to brake up his fathers company, LEO believes he can finally go home ( he performed Inception on himself because he planted the idea in his head that if he can finish this job he can go home to his reality, he used projections to plant the idea for him. You remember he said you can talk to your own sub conscience? Thats how you know their projections.) At the end when Leo is with the very old Saito Leo reminds him of their deal he created himself and Saito shoots both of them. But since he died and didn't give himself a kick, he just went another layer deeper, and in this world he got to finally go home with his kids and when the top is spinning its about to fall because LEO believes he finally is home and Inception worked. Therefore the totem acts as if its reality. If you pay attention in the movie every time Leo goes to spin his totem to see if hes in reality someone interrupts him so he never realizes the world he believed in was a dream.

The reason his wife never wakes him up after she woke up from her jump is because Cobbs is 2 layers deep. (when they killed themselves with the train, it didn't wake them up but rather sent them one layer deeper placing them 2 layers deep and the movie has shown in order to wake up you need to give the kicks in order of the deepest layers.)

I pretty much agree with your analysis. Only one thing to add:

 

The totem is completely meaningless. Whether it falls or continues to spin is completely up to Cobb because he determines the outcome subconsciously. Just my opinion, obviously.

Wow I just realized that. I kind of agree with your analysis but I thought that every time you die in your dream you get sent back to the previous layer, not into a deeper dream layer. The reason you get sent to limbo was because of the sedative they were using.

Yeah. I'm kind of confused now about the dying in a dream and limbo. Remember how Cobb shoots Arthur in the beginning of the movie to wake him up from the dream? But then if you die when they were doing Inception then you get sent to limbo? Idk. I need to see this again.

See though what you guys have to take into account is Cobbs is the only one whos been to LIMBO so everything you know about it comes from him, yet he can;t tell reality from dreams, so everything he said could be completely wrong, which I believe he is.

Going back to what Buzzman was saying with the Mol and Cobb initial situation, maybe when Leo convinces her it isn't real (with the train thing) they are just very deep (Cobb says that they were just going deeper and deeper but doesn't mention dying with sedation or anything like that). If they are on the 4th level, killing themselves would just bring them up a level while still not being reality. Mol realizes this but Cobb doesn't and remains dreaming, while Mol perhaps eventually returns to reality.

I agree with most of the other stuff regarding Saito, especially with that long post pasted by Buzzman a few pages back.

There's only so much to read into a movie, and this one is pretty straight forward if you allow it to be. As Freud (maybe?) once said: Sometimes a banana is just a banana.

Yeah, a week later I still enjoy having a conversation with my buddies and here online trying to theorize or interpret what certain things may mean. I think that talking about it and thinking about it a week later is a sign of a damn good movie.

If they didn't want you to think about this, then they would have shown the top fall over.

The fact that they left this open for debate is 100% intentional. They could have closed all theories, but they chose to leave it open for interpretation. Don't get annoyed if people start to do what is expected of them.
