I read somewhere that in the dream sequences Cobb is wearing his wedding ring but in real life he isn't. In the final scene he isn't wearing it, I got to watch the movie again to check for that.

Awesome movie. Really couldn't help but compare it to the Matrix but it was special in it's own way as well. Will definitely be seeing it again soon.

 

Everyone is obviously blown away by the ending, but I think the point of the ending is that whether the top continues to spin or falls does not matter. What I took from the film (among other things) is that the truth is how you perceive it, if you don't know something isn't real then it actually is real, so in essence, Cobb's inception is completely "real" because it is true to him, and that is all that matters.

If you don't know that you are dreaming, are you actually dreaming?

The film also made me think about the concept of an idea. How each idea is never actually one person's idea but an inception of a thought or idea developed by other people, events, experiences, etc. This is true for every person. You may think that you thought of something yourself, but chances are you actually didn't.

The more I think about the film, the more I realize that so many things didn't make much sense, which actually makes perfect sense. The audience wants to try their best to make sense of things like Saito having the power to make a phone call and Fischer being some billionaire that must destroy his empire but if you think about it it's silly and irrelevant. There are a number of these instances in the movie that I didn't really question at first but now realize they are just decoys or reasons that Cobb has manifested in order to free his mind from "limbo."

The ultimate question is not whether the film was Cobb's inception or reality, but what "limbo" actually is. Is Cobb dead or he is just so deep in the levels of dreaming that he can never escape (in a coma or something?). That, I believe, is ultimately up to each viewer to think about.

I do believe that the end scene is a dream, and I believe that the reason he was able to actually see his children's faces this time, is that he finally dealt with the lingering regret of Mal which allowed him to prevent her from constantly invading his dreams.

On the whole though, I think that Tailback has it 100% right with the "second subject" of the movie.

I agree. Actually, I didn't even think about that aspect.

 

There are a number of themes in the film that pretty much slipped right past me because I had already started analyzing a different theme. Regret, grief, and guilt play a major role in the film. I'm sure there were a couple of other things that I missed as well, which is why this movie will be so good to watch multiple times.

Good movie, saw it last night. Kind of want to see it a second time but overall I was semi-disappointed. I was hoping to be blown away and for it to be the type of film where I keep thinking about it for a few days after watching it. I haven't thought about it all day until now.

I doubt there is a definitive way to prove either way, like you said just a fantastic ending that sparks speculation.

I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a very good job, even though I wish his character didn't have very much depth. Ellen Page did better than I expected as well.


The most though-provoking thing for me was....

 

When Leo and his wife are in "limbo" they first show them killing themselves together as young people. Later on though there was a shot of them holding hands as very old people. I couldn't figure out exactly how that part of the plot worked....

Probably going to have to go see it again to be honest lol

 

Leo did inception on his wife, so thats why he knew it was possible. That's my take on it.

Saw it for the first time last night. It's fucking incredible but I really don't see how people couldn't understand what was happening. I didn't get stoned for the first one, but even if I did, I think I would've been all right. I found Memento much harder to put together upon first viewing. Can't wait to see this movie again (saw TDK three times, don't see why I can't do the same with this one)

But excellent work from Nolan, proving once again why he's my favorite director. Gonna go ahead and put this one atop his catalog for now.

movie is not nearly as good as you guys make it out to be. saw that ending coming a MILE away. couldnt hold memento's jock. i am massively disappointed. i didnt have any trouble following the plot, i saw it completely sober, and felt like it was just another action flick. 6/10 only cuz i saw it in a nice theatre full of people (who laughed/booed the ending)
