Compensation vs wage/payment/benefits is always off. It's never equal. You see it every day in the working world. I'm not sure why people are so shocked that it's happening at colleges.

College athletes are already so out of touch with reality and have a hard enough time assimilating themselves back into society after their college careers are over (obviously not counting the NFL guys)... We don't need to further that by paying them while they are in college, b/c wtf are they gonna do when they have to go back into the real world and find a real job?? They are already live a pampered lifestyle in school, we dont need to further that by paying them, b/c in the long run, paying them will do more damage than good...

None of this is a problem if these kids can go pro at 18 like any other sport or if there is an alternate route to the pro game. The basketball high schoolers and collegiate student athletes are learning and expanding...going to Europe, the D-League, etc. NFL though, has only one real avenue to the pro game...college.

Not only is the NFL boring as fuck, its holding back kids from making money money.

having been a college athlete and having numerous friends that have been college athletes, its not as cut and dry as you try to make it out to be and you aren't grasping the crux of my argument... yes, in Miami it is probably like that, but these fucking VT players (and any other small college town players) that graduate and dont have boosters handing them jobs, they suffer... i had to to interview a guy that played and graduated from VT two years ago, and he hadn't held a real job in those two years, mostly b/c of his attitude (he thought he was better than the work/pay for the jobs he applied for)... paying these spoiled little babies will only compound that attitude...

You do not see this kind of wide spread issue and debate in regards to hockey, baseball, track and field, tennis, etc.

The issue is really with two sports...the biggest money makers for colleges...football and basketball...the two sports that demand you go to college before you can play.

Kids that go to school for hockey and baseball go to school because they want to, not because they have to, necessarily. Otherwise, they go to the minors and play or go overseas and play.

Right now, you have kids that go to school only because they have to, to get to where they want to go.

Well, it is that cut and dry.

I, too, know plenty of former college and professional athletes that now work regular jobs (lot of baseball players, a lot of football players)...heck, I work with a bunch. I get what you are saying, but its not just athletes that have shitty attitudes that keep them unemployed, it is non-athletes, too that feel they are above whatever pay grade they are supposed to be at in any job.

Not sure how that results in not giving athletes their due in college (to which, I disagree with paying them). Bad attitudes are bad attitudes. I just fired a 65 year old part time musician because he had a shitty attitude, it doesn't mean we shouldn't let him make wage however he can.

At what schools? Not my experience with players I've known at various schools like NIU, U of Ill, U of Iowa, Notre Dame, here in the midwest etc.

It happens at Purdue and we don't win shit.

There are several classes that are pretty much athlete only. You have to be in the know to not play and get into them. And ofc they're joke classes where you don't have to do anything.

Purdue has also flat out told kids they can't study engineering because it interferes with the sports practice schedule...forcing those kids to go play/study at a different schoo.

Comparing student athletes (talking about fb and bb) to regular students is completely dishonest. And it's this dishonesty that has allowed the NCAA and schools to skate by on an outdated system. Who gives a shit if reg college kids are broke and eat ramen, they aren't even relevant to the discussion.

NCAA has these kids by the balls. If you have aspirations of playing in the NBA/NFL going to college and playing D1 is the optimal route. But you also end up getting exploited for 1-5 years.

the NBA age restriction is a farce... however, the NFL age restriction is for safety though, as there are rarely any HS kids coming out that could play in the NFL right away...

As somebody mentioned, then maybe the NFL should set up their own minor league structure where they can develop their own players, as opposed to using college ball and essentially forcing dummies into schools when they don't belong.

Good luck with that, but it would fix some of this.

It's exploitation and it gets worse the better the player is.

They do get some compensation, but I'd rather have 50k in cash and allowed to do whatever I want with it, than 50k put towards an "education." Even though I realize most of the kids would blow the money on dumb shit.

I'd guess a huge % of these kids either: don't want/need the education or don't get full value because the sport interferes with it.
