New Blood

Zack Jackson joins the Tribe rotation.​

AP - Cleveland, OH - When the Indians left Cleveland for Toronto. The Tribe held up the team bus while they awaited another bus from Columbus. One carrying pitcher Zach Jackson. Zach had been given the opportunity that he's waited for all season, a chance to pitch for a major league team. And coming on to the squad this late in the season means only one thing as far as expectations for him. Win.

"I feel the pressure". Answered Jackson when asked about the stress that's put on him to deliver early and often. "I feel it, and at the same time I welcome it. I want to be able to look back on this and say. 'They called you up for just this reason, win.' I know that the chips are stacked against me. Let them fall where they lay, I'll be ready."

Jackson was one of a short list of candidates to take over for struggling Carl Pavano. The Indians have almost tapped their AAA potential with pitching. If they needed to dig deeper into the farm system for Major League ready pitchers, they'd have to go further down the list to the AA level. Something that manager Eric Wedge wasn't ready to do, and GM Mark Shapiro trusts his managers, more than anyone else in the organization.

"We looked at a list of pitchers and right away Eric knocked off the AA guys, saying that it's too risky this late. That if we wait for them to develop at this level, we could lose ground in the AL Central. Zach seemed like the best fit for us, young, talented, has started for us before. He was the only one in our AAA line-up with a respectable record (6-4, 3.23 ERA)."

Zach will be joining the club as the fifth starter in the rotation. Aaron Laffey and Jake Westbrook took position jumps on the rotation. Westbrook will be skipped in his start for the new number four in Laffey. "I don't mind." said Westbrook. "I don't get to start against the Blue Jays, but I do get to start against Seattle, on the road." Something the Indians needed after the Mariners split their first season series meeting 2-2.

1.) Win - The Indians have struggled against Toronto. Unable to win a single game this season. It's important for them to win against this team and get a little dignity back. You don't want be known as the only team unable to get a win against the Canadians.

2.) Solid Pitching - With Aaron Laffey moving to four he might feel a little pressure. Zach Jackson is making his debut against a team that the Indians haven't won against, that could be an issue. And of course people are gunning for Fausto Carmona. The Indians pitching staff needs to deliver in Toronto if they want to walk away with a series win, or at least a single win against this club.

3.) Settle In - With the final two months around the corner the Indians need to dig themselves in for the playoff push and believe they can beat anybody, anywhere. To do this they need to get into the game early and pull out wins. It's the most important thing right now for them to stay atop of the AL Central.​

AP - Toronto, CN - The Indians woes against the Toronto Blue Jays continue. The Roger Centre was a buzz with excitement as the Indians came to play. Cleveland, one of the hottest teams in the summer months had never won against Toronto this season, in their previous five meetings, Toronto spoiled the Indians home coming, sweeping them to start the season, and in a quick two game meeting got rid of the Tribe like a nat at a barbecue.

This time, it was no different. David Purcey delivered a complete game, one run victory. The Indians were only able to get six hits against the Blue Jays, one of them coming off of an error. It just goes to show you no matter what kind of season you're having. There's that one team that always seems to have your number, for Cleveland, It's Toronto.

"It's hard to come here, big spacious stadium. A lot of room for them to get hits, and no one knows their stadium better than they do, so it's hard to get ahead here, let alone win." Said Grady Sizemore, the victim of the day for Toronto as a majority of their base hits, and extra base hits came off of balls to center field.

The Tribe will look to right the ship against Toronto once more as Zach Johnson takes the mound for the first time this season. He is however, going up against one of the better arms of the past decade in Roy Halladay. If the Rookie can deliver he will be considered a hero, if he falters. It's just another loss against Toronto.

AP - Toronto, CN - And The Blue Jays do it again. Late in the game Zach Jackson was left on to close out the game. In the eight inning he couldn't deliver the goods as Kerry Wood was warming up. The Indians went on in the top of the ninth and didn't deliver as they fell for the seventh time in seven tries against the Toronto Blue Jays. While the Tribe continue to struggle against the Blue Jays, Manager Eric Wedge is looking at a more looming problem.

"We're losing ground on the White Sox." While the Indians struggle in the late half of the month the White Sox continue to pull closer to them. Now within 4.5 games of the Indians with a little over two months left of baseball to play. The Tribe have been the hottest team as this is their first losing streak in just under a month. For nearly an entire month they won. Even with the huge outburst of wins it wasn't enough to keep the White Sox in the rear view mirror as the Sox inch ever-so closer to taking over the AL Central.

More and more it's looking like the Indians will need to win the AL Central to get into the playoffs. While the Rays and Yankees battle it out for the lead in the wildcard, should the Indians fall they would be sitting in Third with no games against either team. And with a closing series against the best team in baseball, the Red Sox. You don't want to be trialing by more than a game heading into the final week of the season.

"We feel the pressure from the White Sox." Said Victor Martinez. "We took their spot, now they want it back. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season goes. All we can do is try to go out their and deliver one win after another and hope its enough come the end of the season to put a AL Central pennant on our wall. We'll see what happens."

The Indians look to Fausto Carmona to deliver the first win against Toronto tomorrow as he puts his 11-1 record on the line.

Hmm, cause up until the bottom of the eighth he was the winning pitcher. Jensen Lewis has struggled as a set-up man. And Jackson is a young arm that can go eight innings deep. Just so happened that it unraveled before I had the chance to sub him out with Kerry Wood.

AP - Toronto, CN - For once it looked like the Indians were going to win. For once it looked like they would get a win against the Toronto Blue Jays this season. For the ninth time though, Jhonny Peralta tossed an error. It allowed Marko Scutaro on base and three pitches later Alex Rios went yard for the 14th time this season. All of that translated into the eighth and final time the Indians would lose to the Toronto Blue Jay, the Blue Jays complete the season series sweep.

"Luckily for us, right now they're not making the playoffs." Said Grady Sizemore after the game. "When you have a team that just dominates you like that during the season, that's a team you don't want to face in October. Not saying they couldn't get there between now and then, for right now though? They're out and we're still in." Perhaps that was Grady's attempt at shedding some light on an otherwise bleak outlook on the season series against Toronto.

"Every year there is a team that has your number, plain and simple." Said Victor Martinez. "That no matter what you do, no matter how many runs you score, they still find a way to beat you. So far this year, that's the Blue Jays. They keep finding ways to beat us." The Indians dropped their fourth straight in their late month skid, something that Eric Wedge hopes to turn around as they head west for a six game road trip that includes the Seattle Mariners, and the Angles of Anaheim.

"We're going to turn this around or we'll start sinking in the standings. I don't want that to happen, to be on the outside looking in after this great season, right now though that's a possible reality unless we right this ship. We're going through a rough patch. Hopefully we can turn it around against the Mariners and Angles. We're hoping to at least win one of those series."

It will be a daunting task for the Indians whose ace starter Fausto Carmona suffered his second loss of the season. While only the second loss it proves that not even he can will the Indians to victory he watched the Alex Rios ball clear the wall and looked to Eric Wedge and shrugged. "I look to Eric, shrugged, yeah. That's all you can do, that pitch shouldn't of left the yard but it did, what can I say. He willed it out."

1.) Ignore Jet Lag - The Indians will be fatigued from the get-go. Tired from a sweep in Toronto to fly across the country and start again the next day. They'll need to stay as focused as possible on this road trip in order to come out victorious in this series.

2.) Ignore the White Sox - With the White Sox charging there is no reason to score board watch when all the Indians have to do is win. There isn't any situational standings, yet. So paying attention to what other teams are useless, still, at this point.

3.) Base Running Discipline - This was a problem in the last series against the Mariners. Indians were getting gunned down left and right be the outfielders. If they stay disciplined on the base paths they can get in scoring position and push runs across the plate.​

AP - Seattle, WA - The road woes for the Indians continued as the Seattle Mariners beat them for the third time in the past week. The Mariners crushed the ball early and often against Cliff Lee and played excellent defense to keep the runs off the board for the Tribe. Who dropped their fifth straight. The Indians haven't been able to win recently on the road which all started against the Mariners who were the first to at least split a series with the Indians in the month of July.

While the Tribe start to cool off one can only wonder if the Tribe really are contenders as they've dropped games against sub par teams in the American league. Starting with a series split with Seattle and getting swept by the Blue Jays of Toronto. While they continue to look for the answers, manager Eric Wedge has a theory. "With every hot streak, you need a cold streak. We haven't had a month yet where we didn't at least lose four games or more. Look back at our months and you'll see every month we do this, this time it came in the later half of the month rather than the earlier half like before."

Other experts believe that maybe the Indians are beginning to crack under the pressure of being a division leader like the Tigers, and White Sox before them. Peter Gammons had this to say about the Indians organization in his blog on Friday. "While the Indians struggle they learn that this division is far from won. They jumped ahead in the summer months and now are slowly coming back down to earth. This is the test of teams to see if they're truly ready for October baseball. Should the Indians become pretenders it's just another reason to believe that it will be a long time before a Championship reaches the city of Cleveland."
