AP - Seattle, WA - The streak started with the last game against Seattle at home. It's only fair that it end with the last game against Seattle, on the road. The Indians came in suffering a six game losing streak. With the AL Central race tightening up the Indians needed a win today to break their streak of bad games, and tough losses. Behind the arm of Aaron Laffey, they finally found the relief they needed.
Laffey has been that up and down pitcher for the Indians. His record can dictate that, for every good game he has delivered there has been a bad one. And vise-versa. At least he's consistent though, that's what has kept Aaron in the rotation since the start of the season, his consistency. While pitchers are either on fire, or they struggled, Aaron has been that happy medium. The guy that you know your going to get a good game out of him, or a bad one. Not a roller coaster ride, today the Indians got a good game.
The Indians scored two runs early, in the first and second, they scored a run a piece. The Mariners threatened the lead with a solo shot from Yuni Betancourt, his eleventh of the year. There were a few more crack of the bats for both teams, and a boat load of hits from the Indians, but after the fourth? No one scored and it was up to the starting pitchers, and the relief guys to get the job done.
Out of the bullpen for the Indians, one man, called up earlier in the year has been the definition of clutch. That man is none other than Vinnie Chulk. Chulk came on for relief of Aaron Laffey in the seventh inning, Eric Wedge didn't want to push Aaron any further than he had too. "I went out there and talked to him a moment, in the sixth. Told him to get us through this and I'm giving it to the bullpen. We discussed the situation, Victor said let Chulk come out, Aaron agreed. I made the call when I got back to the bullpen. The rest is history."
Chulk came on and pushed the Indians through the seventh and eighth innings before handing it over to closer Kerry Wood. Wood has been phenomenal this season and added to his one strike out per inning of work. Wood was able to get hard hitting Ichiro Suzuki to strike out, then he faced Ken Griffey Jr. Who hit a nice little dribbler to the mound and Wood secured his thirty-sixth save of the year.
