I expect them to spread Olsen out wide a lot more next year. Gotta use the little talent you have.. and Olsen is the most talented receiver on the team. And since Martz dont like to use the TE too much, the only solution is to use the TE more as a wide out.

That's what I thought too. I really don't know the answer to this, but how much experience does Olsen have split wide? Is he any good in that role? I couldn't imagine he'd be that great out there, but like I said I haven't seen him do it.

You guys are acting like Greg Olsen is even remotely elite.
The second a white guy is slightly above average, everyone thinks he's Jason Witten.
Olsen is not Jason Witten.
He is what he is - a 50-60 reception respectable tight end. Not a player worth keeping an offensive gameplan stagnant for, nor a player worth changing it for.

Greg Olsen is a good to above average player, nothing more, and nothing near a franchise player. If the Bears have to trade him to give themselves a truly Martz-like offence, so be it. They're not trading Antonio Gates, Kellen Winslow Sr., etc...

Olsen is the best receiver the Bears have - by no means does that make him "elite."
I think anyone who watches Bears games regularly sees the big potential Olsen has, he's obviously not there yet but I think most people would agree he's got what it takes to eventually be an elite TE.

the fact that a slightly above avrage TE is the best reciveron a team should tell you something. olsen does not have the 'tools' to be elite. big and white and able to catch the ball and dive to the ground are not the 'tool's to being an elite te, not even in chit-town.

After watching 90 % of Bears game over the course of the last 4 seasons.The one thing that stands out in my mind is Hester's development.
I think it has to be noted that a DB(not very good one at that) is making the transition to a wide out that's on the field the majority of the time.Does that in itself make him a good reciever?No, but imo he's shown the improvement neccessary to stay on the field,as a slot reciever,and with a decent coordinator(Martz?) he's got the skills to be a very explosive weapon.

Hester blows as a WR. He has no natural feel or instinct for the position and could barely digest Turner's playbook...let alone Martz's. He has shown SO little development in 3 years at the position is absurd.

He wasn't a good DB either. He flip flopped back and forth from offense to defense at the U.

And the Bears didn't try to use him as a slot guy. They hilariously tried to turn him into a #1 receiver.

Devin Hester is not a number 1 reciever. He's never been used as a slot reciever. All purpose yards? So in '06, he was a return guy only.'07 was the first year of the experiment and still was the primary return guy. '08 He saw his snaps increase, first year he actually had a significant role in the offense, in which he was terrible(understandably so).

In 2009 he played in 13 Games.

Olson isn't a playmaker or a redzone threat. He was first among TEs for 'targets' (by a wide margin, actually), but he was near the bottom for 'yards-after-catch'. I believe he averaged less than 1.0 YAC per reception, which is almost impossible. He also didn't catch a high percentage of his targets...which may be more of a reflection on the Bears overall offense, but still it doesn't scream "elite" to me.

I think the Bears could plug in any journeyman TE for Olson and get similar production. My $0.02.

Impressive. I'm fairly certain that Greg Olsen could break both of his legs during preseason, 2010, miss the entire year, and Mike Martz will have that offense way above anything it's been during those three seasons. I can't even believe this conversation is still going, it's Greg Olsen - not Dallas Clark. You shouldn't need 4 years to develop at a position other than QB in the NFL. No team has the ability to wait around that long.

The average length of someone's career is barely 5-6 years.

He's having growing pains,and how could he not? New quarterback and different play calling is difficult for any young reciever.

He's had the same playbook since the day he came to the NFL. STFU. The plays themselves haven't changed......which was a huge criticism of Turner this season. Not adapting to Cutler's style of play.

I'm not arguing that he's a great reciever,but his hands have become respectable and his routes are a hell of a lot better then they were in '08.

His hands have ALWAYS been fine. Hester had good hands as soon as he came to the NFL and the Bears raved about his hands in 2007 when he made the change.

I'm just saying, if he's used properly, he's got the tools to be a big time threat,speed and hands included. Calling him terrible, is just dumb. He's developing.

No he's not. Hester blows as an NFL WR. He's fuckign awful and needs to stick to returning kicks. It;s getting old having this discussion with idiot Bears fans year after year while they insist Hester "will develop" or "needs time". He's had 3 damn seasons.
