LMAO at some of the people here, there is no way in hell Garcia starts over Russel. The only reason why Garcia is signed is just to be a mentor nothing more and Russel is far from a bust he progressed well at the end of the year and played good for his first full season starting

Garcia will be nothing more than a teacher and a mentor to Russell. He will provide some great leadership and will be able to teach JR about what it takes to win in this league, not to mention how to handle yourself appropriately. JR needs that, he is young and could use a role-model. Garcia is a 3 time pro-bowler, he has done some nice things in this league.

Secondly, I think the Raiders will win 7-9 games this year. I may be a bit optimistic, but the moves this offseason have all been toward the goal of creating a team-like atmosphere and building character in the locker room. We won't find out whether that attitude transfers over to the field till September but this team is starting to install some confidence in me.

As for Jamarcus Russell I hope Garcia gets the start over him so Raiders fans can see a real QB. I mean why have Garcia sit on the bench, he has 11 more %'ge points on his completion percent. That's huge! Going from a 53.8% qb to a 64.9% qb!

Russell is fine. The last 3 games of last season were his best games as he threw 6 TDs and 2 INTs and had QB rating's of 85.7, 128.1, and 98.9.

He obviously needs more time but he isn't terrible. He threw 13 TDs and 8 INTs last year. That's far from the rookie QB in history, yet some of you are trying to hard to paint it out like that.

Garcia is a better QB at this point but he is a completely different QB from Russell. There is no point in having him start because this team isn't a championship caliber team. Russell is fine learning by playing.

There's no future with Garcia and at this point I think JR is ready to learn by playing and not watching.

That being said, everybody here is like "hey, wait a while... give Russell time... he's only had so much time to play and learn the pro game..."

The NFL is a "win now/what have you done for me lately league." It's tough that Russell has to suffer for it but if he is what Raider Nation hopes he will be, then Garcia showing his face in camp won't affect the young QB from LSU.

...however, if Garcia gets the starter spot and keeps it for more than 4 games, it's time to cut your losses and draft a new quarterback.

Hmmm ... let me think: Russell is fat, doesn't work hard in the film room, couldn't hit water if he threw a football out of a boat, has no mobility, etc...
Other than that, he's a classic QB.

Well he turned the ball over 20 times (8 int's 12 fumbles). That's 20 negatives to 13 (14 with 1 rushing touchdown) positives, for essentially a -6 rub.

Had the 2nd worst completion %'ge of all teams only Derek Anderson had worse.

Kwame Harris sucks and Cornell Green is not worthy of being a starter. Russell fumbled so much because he was always under constant heat. Sometimes he would hold on to the ball too long and carry it carelessly to his side and fumble that way.

Russell as the season went on was getting more and more accurate.

In Jamarcus Russell's final 3 games of the season he completed about 63% (49/78) of his passes, throwing for 836 yards, and throwing 6 tds to only 2 interceptions. Don't forget this is Russell's first year as a full time starter.

For the record, Joe Flacco threw 14 TDs and 12 INTs last season. Matt Ryan was 16 & 11.

Russell is fine. He just needs more time and consistency in his offensive scheme & coaching stff. Garcia will help him with his work ethic and reading defenses.

It will take a couple years before Russell gets it, and Raider fans understand that and are willing to wait, unlike the rest of the NFL.

That's a lot of speculation. If a team were that worried about hurting a guy's confidence they don't draft him to be the franchise qb. I prefer to look at the other side of the coin & say the guy is getting valuable on-the-job training (& he's not getting drilled on every play like David Carr was). Give him a couple seasons before giving up on him & keep Garcia as what he's intended to be: a nice insurance policy.
