Jays ship Rolen to Detroit for Raburn

DETROIT, MI (AP) -- Scott Rolen knew as soon as his bat touched nothing but air in the 8th inning of Monday's game versus the New York Yankees, that he was not going to have another at-bat with the Toronto Blue Jays this season. His premonition came true the next morning as he was shipped to the Detroit Tigers for prospect Ryan Raburn.

Rolen came into Spring Training with a stranglehold on the starting third base job but a Spring in which he hit only .225 with 2 home runs and 11 RBIs put him on the bench in favor of the younger Jose Bautista, who has been a pleasant surprise at third this season for the Jays. Rolen did win the starting designated hitter spot in Early May but he hadn't hit for the power that Blue Jays management expected for a middle of the order hitter and last week was replaced at DH by Jim Edmonds effectively ending Rolen's tenure in a Blue Jays uniform.

"It's sad to know that my career here is over but hopefully I get a chance in Detroit to show I still have some pop left." Rolen, who had been hitting .288 with 5 HRs and 23 RBIs thru Sunday will rotate with Brandon Inge for playing time at third.

The Blue Jays get Ryan Raburn in return, a career .255 hitter with 8 home runs and 48 RBIs who at 27, is considered too old to be classified as a prospect. Ranked by Baseball America as the number one prospect in the Tigers' system in 2004, Raburn was dessimated by an alcohol problem but says he's a new man.

"It's a new team and I expect to show the Tigers and everyone that doubted me that they were wrong." The second basemen said.

Sure I do, I don't do this exclusively for comments but they are nice to get and especially with the Around the League update which takes me 45 mins to an hour to complete, I do like to have comments.
