Edmonds injured, Jays call up Loewen

BALTIMORE, MA (AP) -- Two years ago, a 27 year old outfielder broke into the Major Leagues two days before the All Star Break and proceeded to be one of the biggest stories of the season. That players name? Rick Ankiel, a pitcher turned outfielder who is now a steady middle of the order hitter for the St.Louis Cardinals.

Enter a 24 year old, pitcher turned outfielder by the name of Adam Loewen. Loewen is so similar to Ankiel that they could be the same person; they both tore up the Fall Leagues, both prone to comparisons to the most famous of pitchers turned hitters -Babe Ruth- and they both got a shot because one of their teams' sluggers went down for an extended period of time.

Perhaps the strangest concidence of all is that for both players, they have gotten their shots thanks to Jim Edmonds. For Ankiel, Edmonds broke his arm slamming into a wall against the Cincinnati Reds while for Loewen, Edmonds broke his forearm sliding into second base during last night's game in Baltimore.

Edmonds took an MRI this morning and was diagnosed with a Broken Forearm, an ailment that will keep him out until Mid-September. He had been hitting .327 while leading the team with 14 home runs and 35 RBIs after being signed on May 3rd to platoon at designated hitter. He had replaced the since traded Scott Rolen full time at the position last week and was in the midst of a 10 game hitting streak.

"I'm not too happy, but these things happen, I just hope that I haven't played my last game yet." A visibly shaken Edmonds said of the injury.

Loewen had been hitting .310 with 9 home runs and 53 RBIs for the division leading Las Vegas 51s in Triple-A and is expected to immediately take Edmonds' duties at DH.

"I'm excited, a lot of people did not think I could make the majors as a hitter but here I am." A smiling Loewen said in Baltimore where he met up with the team. He is expected to make his major league debut after the All Star Break with Ryan Raburn taking the DH duties for the finale of the Jays' three game set versus the Orioles.

The secret weapon for the best offense in baseball, Dickerson has established himself as a five tool threat who regularly hits in the middle of the powerful Reds order. He has the second most stolen bases in the NL as well as leading the league in triples. Dickerson has led the Reds to the top of the NL wildcard race and will surely lead the team for a long time.
