All-Star game thriller ends in Soriano mistake, AL wins 11-10

ST.LOUIS, MO-- There is no other spectacle on Earth such as the MLB All-Star game. Nowhere else will you see bitter rivals competing, not against each other, but coexisting for one night to reach one goal: Win home field advantage for their league. Lately, it had been pretty one sided in favor as the AL, thanks to the fact they'd won the past 7 All-Star games, which still netted them 3 losses in the Series.

The game in St.Louis was unlike no other, featuring a plethora of young talent hardly seen anymore in the steroid tainted league. The two vets of the group -- Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez, each making his 13th apperance -- barely cracking a smile when chatting to each other before the game, set the tone.

Beautiful Busch Stadium hosted the game

The first inning would be an easy 1-2-3 for NL starter Johan Santana (9-5, 2.05 ERA) but AL starter Mark Buehrle (10-4, 2.47 ERA) would have a more winding road, giving up a solo home run to number two hitter Ryan Braun on only his fifth pitch of the game.

"I know it's all in good fun, but you want to win too and to give up a homer so early... It hurt man." Buehrle said of the home run.

In the second inning, the AL onslaught would begin with a two out Vernon Wells double that plated two runners. It would get no better for the NL in the fourth when reserve first baseman Chris Davis hit a three run moonshot off of NL pitcher Cole Hamels.

"I think we knew what we had to do, and to get out into that early 7-1 lead, it was terrific." AL manager Terry Francona said of his charges.

By the 6th inning, the AL had gotten out to a 9-1 lead, including 4 RBIs from Toronto Blue Jays players. The Canadian Kids would not be done making their mark on the All-Star Game, when in the sixth, catcher Rod Barajas hit a long home run to center field, making the score a seemingly untoppable 11-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Barajas was named MVP of the game after his home run gave the AL a bigger lead

Enter the NL. Spit on and picked on by the AL for too long, they finally put their 'money where their mouth is' and turned on the burner. First, a Hanley Ramirez triple and subsiquently after a two out RBI single from Cubs' speedster Alfonso Soriano who would get into scoring position by stealing second base of off Barajas' notoriously weak arm. His Cubs' teammate Aramis Ramirez would trim the lead that much closer with a line drive home run to centerfield. 11-4 going into the eighth inning.

Reds closer Francisco Cordero showed the St.Louis crowd why he is considered the best closer in the NL by striking out the side and giving the NL some much needed momentum going into the bottom of the 8th. That momentum would produce a Jay Bruce double, an Adrian Gonzalez RBI single, a Carlos Lee walk and a Rickie Weeks single to load the bases for sophomore Cubs catcher Geovany Soto who promptly deposited a bases clearing double into the gap in left field. 11-7 NL going into the nineth, and this one was getting heated.

"Matt Holliday and Chris Iannetta are best friends and they wouldn't look each other in the eye when Holliday went to bat in the nineth, this game is that serious." Broadcaster Joe Buck said of the NL, AL rivalry.

The nineth would be another easy 1-2-3 for the NL's spectacular relievers but now it was all on the bats to come through and pull off the historic upset in the bottom of the nineth.

The AL sent in Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon to finish the job with a projected lineup of Soriano, Ramirez and Lee coming to bat.

Soriano would send a dribbler down the line for a single setting up a Ramirez single that sent the slugger to third. With two on and a 3-2 count, the Astros number three hitter (Lee) would propel a shot to straight away left field. 11-10 NL.

History was breathing down manager Joe Torre's neck.

"I had the shivers going." Chuckled Torre after the game.

Francona would take his guy off the mound and send in Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan he of the 87 MP/H fastball. Nathan would strike out Adrian Gonzalez, give up a single to Jay Bruce and strike out Rickie Weeks putting Soto at bat with two out and Bruce at first. However, before Nathan could throw a pitch in the at-bat Bruce had stolen second. Soto would single up the gut advancing Bruce to third and sending Soriano to the dish once again.

"It was the single most nerve racking experience of my life, more than the World Series... more than anything." Soriano said during post game interviews.

Nathan's first pitch was down the middle for a strike. Second was down and away. The third hit the corner and was called a strike. by umpire Dutch Nelson. 1-2 count and Soriano's bat had not left his shoulder.

Finally, a Nathan curve ball caught him swinging. Game over right!?

Wrong.

The ball had went under Barajas' glove and before the catcher could manage a throw, Soriano had reached first, safe and loading the bases.

Aramis Ramirez came to the plate needing an RBI to tie the game.

That first pitch will live in infamy for the rest of time.

Soriano had taken a comfortable lead at first and when Nathan started his windup, he took off, forgetting about the lead runners.

"I was kinda like, So, what are you doing man?" The man at second, Soto said.

Not knowing what to do, Soto took off for third and Bruce went for home. Easy out for the catcher and the game was over just as quick as the rally had begun.

"I couldn't look my teammates in the eye after that, just absolutely heartbreaking." Bruce says of the play.

Due to one 'brainfart' the AL will have home field advantage in the World Series for the 8th straight year and, says Soriano, the only way to forget about this whole mishap is to lead his Cubs team to the Fall Classic and win, breaking the 100 year curse.

For his sake, let's hope he can do it.

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- All's well in Toronto. The Jays are 51-40, tickets are selling more than ever before, they have a matchup against the division leading Boston Red Sox coming up and their owner is happy with Manager Cito Gaston and G.M. J.P. Riccardi's success.

Owner T.Dot --who made his fortune running a website called VSN gave his Manager and G.M. a stamp of approval yesterday after the All Star Game in St.Louis.

In that game, the Blue Jays had three representatives --Vernon Wells, Rod Barajas and Lyle Overbay-- who combined for 1 home run and 5 RBIs in the American League's 11-10 win over the National League.

"I was watching the game with my wife Keegan Scott Rush and I jumped for joy when Roddy hit that homer," The exubarent owner said yesterday at Rogers Center, "It only made it better that the AL won because we're going to need that advantage when we get to the Series. I was extremely happy with three of our guys representing our team so well in a stage like that and getting three guys acheived the goal I set at the beginning of the season for at least two All Star nominees from this team, just shows how well Cito coaches these guys."

Notice the keyword in T.Dot's speech was when and not if. When asked if that was a guarantee, he replied, "It's only a guarantee when it happens."

What that means, will leave many sportswriters wondering but one thing is for sure, if the Jays continue playing the way they have, T.Dot may have been dead on.
