As Trade Deadline approaches, rumors swirling in Toronto

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- Ten days ago, Roy Halladay was on top of the world.

He had thrown three straight complete games -- including two shutouts -- and had put together a 5-0 record with a 0.56 ERA in his past five starts.

All that was thrown away on Thursday, when the Toronto Blue Jays ace pitched only 4 and two thirds innings giving up 4 runs and 11 hits on the way to a 6-2 Cleveland Indians win in which he was given the loss.

'That game was really tough man, I hadn't gone through much adversity lately so I guess that game kinda brought me back down to Earth," Halladay said while watching last night's game at the Rogers Center, " Hopefully my next start is better."

The problem with that statement is that Halladay may not get another start in a Blue Jays uniform. A recent report on ESPN.com reported that Blue Jays General Manager J.P. Riccardi was actively shopping the ace to over ten teams with more than five with interest.

Halladay's most likely destination is Chicago. The Cubs were actively shopping for another top of the rotation pitcher last winter but they may not have the prospects the Blue Jays want. Another option is the Los Angeles Dodgers, the NLs best team, whose ace is 13 game winner Hiroki Kuroda who many believe is a first half bust. Finally, Halladay may stay with the Jays, something he says is his first option.

"I understand the buisness aspect of the game but of course I would love to stay in Toronto, I guess [we'll] have to see."

While Halladay's 8-7 record on the season is not sexy in some G.M.s minds, there is no doubt in anyone's mind that Halladay cannot lead a team to the playoffs. The only question is, will he stay to lead the Jays on a late run or will he be traded to help another contender out?

We'll know the answer on July 31.

Injuries everywhere in recent Jays win, two called up

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- Team's that are on a three game win streak are usually joyous and exuberant after a 7-4 win over a division rival.

Every team, except the Toronto Blue Jays that is.

The Birds' 7-4 win over rival Tampa Bay on Saturday cost them two of their most underrated players.

In the second inning of the game, starting pitcher Brian Burres fell to the mound in agony clutching his pitching elbow. He was pulled out of the game in favor of Jesse Litsch and on Sunday morning was diagnosed with Forearm Tightness and sent down to the Jays' Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas for rehab conditioning. His replacement is 23 year old Brett Cecil, classified as the third best prospect in the Blue Jays' system by Baseball Prospectus going into this season. Cecil had a team best 5-4 record with a 3.19 ERA in 20 starts for the 51's and is expected to make his career debut on Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners.

Just two innings after Burres' injury, the bug hit the Jays again, this time striking down third baseman Jose Bautista. Bautista stretched a little too far for a ground ball and was diagnosed with a strained pectoral which will keep him out of action for 2-3 weeks. His replacement is little known third baseman Mark Sobolewski who was the understudy of star Ryan Braun at the University of Miami. Sobolewski had been tearing up the minors this season hitting a combined .344 in Triple and Double-A with 13 home runs and 58 RBIs. He will start at third during the series finale with Tampa.

"I know that these kids are rookies and everything but they deserve a shot and hopefully they deliver on the promise they showed in the minors." Manager Cito Gaston said of the pair.

The Jays can only hope Gaston is right.

I honestly don't think I can compete with the Yanks and Sox this year, I don't.
I think that even if Halladay won every start from now till September it wouldn't be enough so trading him for some good prospects and players will help for the future and present.
Remember I expect this to 4-5 years.

Injuries everywhere in recent Jays win, two called up

SEATTLE, WA (AP) -- "I don't know what it is, we haven't had any injuries all year and now we've had three in the past two games."

Blue Jays Manager Cito Gaston was not happy with the cruel way fate has played with his team's hamstrings and pectorals.

Last night it was Brian Burres and Jose Bautista and tonight it was shortstop Marco Scutaro.

While diving for a ground ball in the second inning, Scutaro sprained his tricep and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks as a result. He had been batting .285 with 2 home runs and 21 RBIs after taking the starting position at shortstop away from incumbent John McDonald last month.

"It sucks, I think I was just finding my groove offensively but hopefully I can come back better than before." Scutaro said of the injury.

His replacement is 21 year old Justin Jackson, the Jays first round pick in 2007, who was red hot in Double-A batting .259 with 7 home runs and 35 RBIs. He will start on days the Jays play left handed pitchers while McDonald handles righties. This move however created a lot of conterversy throughout the organization as many thought that Russ Adams, currently at Triple-A Las Vegas, deserved a call up more.

"I know that Justin is young but it doesn't hurt for him to get experience," Jays G.M. J.P. Riccardi said of the youngster from North Carolina, "If it was closer to the playoffs we would have went with Russ for sure but right now, it won't hurt us to put him in there for a shot and see how he does. Plus, he has more power than any other shortstop in our organization so that's a plus as well."

Jackson is unlikely to play on Monday when the Jays open a three game series at the Seattle Mariners.
