CHICAGO, IL (AP) -- Jim Thome has come a long way.

This time last year he was in the middle of a 1-39 slump that would bring his batting average from .312 to .256 and was contemplating retirement.

"Sure I was thinking a little about quitting the game then but I'm sure glad I didn't" A grinning Thome said recently.

Hitting .304 with 32 home runs and 79 RBIs this season, Thome has come alive hitting cleanup for the AL Central leading Chicago White Sox who are perennial World Series contenders this season because of Thome's return.

"I told Jim that we needed him, I knew he still had some pop left in that bat." G.M. Kenny Williams says of the slugger.

Pop he has, as he overtook the leader of the AL home run race last week by hitting 3 in a game against second place Minnesota. And according to Thome, there's a lot more where that came from.

"Now that I'm back to my old self, team's better watch out because I'm coming for the rest of the season and in October."

This year no one doubts a bold statement like that when a man like Thome utters it.

Trade Deadline Bait 2009

​

As the most nerve-wracking day for likely MLB Free Agents approaches, it is time for a list of the top 5 most likely players to be traded this July 31. While, there is not any Manny Ramirez's in this year's pool there is a very popular starting pitcher who is coveted by many. Without furthur adieu:

1. Jake Peavy, SP, San Diego Padres

Peavy is a workhorse. He will pitch 200 innings without breaking a sweat and will be an ace for 5-10 more years. His fastball is one of the best in the league, which is one of the reasons he is always near the top of the NL strikeouts list every year. While Peavy is not having a Cy-Young type year, he will definitely have a C.C. Sabathia-type impact on a contender this year.

Teams Interested: Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee, New York Mets, Cincinnati

2. Adrien Beltre, 3B, Seattle Mariners

While Beltre will probably never repeat his 49 home run performance he had in 2004 with the Dodgers, he is a near lock for 25 home runs every year and has hit 11 in the month of July alone. Beltre has expressed anger at Mariners management for their lack of putting up a strong team and is a near lock to be traded. Along with his bat, Beltre has a good defensive prescence which will help any team in the field.

Teams Interested: Toronto, Anaheim, Chicago

3. Matt Holliday, LF, Oakland Athletics

Traded to the A's last summer, he has been a key part of their resurgence but many believe that Billy Beane is looking to rebuild as referenced by his May trade of Jason Giambi. Holliday will net the A's a few very good prospects who can help the team in the future. He has tremoundous power and is an above average fielder considering his girth. Any contender that needs a bat will look at him.

Teams Interested: Boston, New York Mets, Minnesota, Los Angeles

4. Cliff Lee, SP, Cleveland Indians

While Lee has not had the season he had last year in Cleveland, he has still shown the remarkable control and poise he possesed for most of last year. He could be placed anywhere from 1-3 in a team's rotation depending on how deep they are and is almost a sure thing to pitch 5 plus innings every start. Cleveland declined to sign him to an option last winter making it seem like they are willing to let him go in 2010.

Teams Interested: Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Anaheim

5. Dan Uggla, 2B, Florida Marlins

A two time All-Star, Uggla is known more for being a hard hitter than his mediocre fielding at second base. He has not been as powerful as he has shown the past two years but he can comfortably step in and DH for an American League contender. He is more of a 5-6 hitter then a 3-4 hitter due to his tendency to strike out but there is no doubt about his ability to smack the ball.

Injury bug strikes again as McDonald hit

SEATTLE, WA (AP) -- Six game winning streaks are always nice for teams, especially when they are playing the lowly Seattle Mariners, but the Jays dugout last night was very sombre after Manager Cito Gaston announced John McDonald had been diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder and will be out 2-3 months.

"Johnny Mac is one of our team leaders and to see him go down like that is tough, hopefully he'll be alright." Center Fielder Vernon Wells said of the energetic shortstop.

McDonald had been batting .286 with two home runs and 17 RBIs while playing as the part time guy behind incumbant Marco Scutaro, who suffered an injury of his own last week that landed him on the 15 Day DL. McDonald's injury was a lot less gruesome then one would think, a simple hyperextension of his shoulder that caused catastrophic concequences for the Jays.

"Everyone knows John for his defense but he is also such a charasmatic guy that his loss will not be very beneficial to the young guys like Sobolewski and Jackson who look up to him." Jays announcer Jamie Campbell said.

McDonald's replacement is Russ Adams, the same player who publicly complained after Justin Jackson was recalled to fill Scutaro's place rather than [Adams]. He had been batting .259 with zero home runs and 31 RBIs with Triple-A Las Vegas and is expected to split time with Jackson at the position.

"I'm happy to get another chance and I hope I can just play my best for the team." The 29 year old said Tuesday. He is expected to be in the lineup when the Blue Jays play the series finale at Safeco Field.
