Phenom? Sobolewski just happy to be here

OAKLAND, CA (AP) -- Last year around this time, Mark Sobolewski was preparing for high Class-A ball with the Lansing Lugnuts, wondering if he'd ever make it to the Bigs.

A year later, the answer to his question was given to him by General Manager J.P. Riccardi who called the former University of Miami standout up from Triple-A Las Vegas after the former had been tearing up the minors since the beginning of the season.

"Sure, I was doing good but it honestly never crossed my mind until J.P. called me up." Laughed the third baseman nicknamed 'Sobo'.

While many believed that the Jays and Manager Cito Gaston would call on the recently acquired Ryan Raburn to start at third base, it was instead the 21 year old from Palm Beach, Florida who has started all four of his MLB games at third.

"We knew how good Mark was in the minors and I think Cito wanted to see how he would react in the majors, after all if it failed it was only three or four games." Riccardi said.

Fail, however, is the farthest word to describe Sobo's impact on the Jays. In the four games he has played since being called up, the Jays have gone 4-0 with an average margin of victory of 4 runs and Sobolewski has batted an impossible .632 with one home run, 7 RBIs and 4 doubles to his name. To put it simply, he is making it look easy.

"I know that I've been pretty good so far, but it's four games in and there's already so much talk about me being this and that, I just want to play ball." The modest Sobolewski said of the hype he has generated.

That's what happens when you come a triple short of a cycle in your fourth game, even through for the entire game it seemed like he had hit a triple. In the sixth inning of Wednesday's game, Sobolewski hit a deep fly ball that was misplayed by Ichiro in right, Sobolewski was at first credited with an RBI triple but it was overturned and ruled an RBI double with an error on the play by Major League Baseball afterwards.

Asked on how he felt about it Sobolewski said, "Fine, I'll just get one next time and make sure it isn't overturned."

If that's not the kind of ball player every manager wants then I do not know what is. For now Sobolewski will focus on the Jays' upcoming series in Oakland where he will look to further the Sobomania going on around Canada, just don't tell him.

"I just try and do my best every game, I don't try and impress anyone."

I don't watch much college ball, A-Rod is listed as N/A for college though. That and he was primarily a SS before coming to the Yankees where he took 3B duties. Great article though, can't wait to see what the kid can do for you.

Jays acquire Beltre, Riccardi preaches playoffs

OAKLAND, CA (AP) -- It must feel good to be Adrian Beltre. On July 30 the star third baseman went to bed with a 27-74 record with the Seattle Mariners and woke up with a 33 win increase with the Toronto Blue Jays.

In perhaps the most shocking from a relatively mediocre trade deadline day, the floundering Mariners dealt Beltre to the Blue Jays who are only 2.5 games out of a Wildcard spot in the tough American League. Add to that the fact that they kept ace Roy Halladay who, according to ESPN.com reports had been traded to the Chicago Cubs early Thursday morning. Good thing for him and the Blue Jays, those reports were false.

"We had been scouting Adrian since mid June but since Jose [Bautista, starting third baseman] went down a couple weeks ago, it really opened up a spot for Adrian." Jays G.M. J.P. Riccardi said Friday at the team's hotel in Oakland.

Beltre, who had been hitting .275 with 17 home runs and 64 RBIs, made this year's AL All Star team, the fourth such apperance of his career. He had publicly renounced Mariners management and had requested a trade to a contender in Early May.

Request granted.

The red hot Blue Jays have only lost 6 games in the month of July alone and are on a seven game win streak that has closed to gap from 6.5 games a week ago to 2.5 on Friday. There offense is third best in the AL and the addition of Beltre will only add fuel to the offensive fire the Jays have.

There are questions about Beltre's prescense in the lockerroom but Riccardi passes it off as bitterness on being on a losing team.

"If you notice all the knocks on him came this year after the M's started tanking, before that all I heard was good, you'd be a bit mad if you're team was 47 games below .500 wouldn't you?"

In return for Beltre's services, the Blue Jays gave up promising young pitcher Jesse Litsch who had been arguably the best pitcher in the Jays' arsenal this year with a 9-6 record and a 4.61 ERA. Along with Litsch the Jays gave up left handed reliever Jesse Carlson who accumilated a 1-1 record with a 3.80 ERA on the season while performing as a standard lefty set-up man. The third player the Jays gave up was third base prospect Kevin Ahrens who became expendable with the recent breakout of Mark Sobolewski. Ahrens had been batting .221 with 5 home runs and 17 RBIs with Double-A New Hampshire after rebounding from an early season injury.

"The loss of Litsch is particularly tough to handle but I have confidence in the team to get it done, not everyday does a talent like Beltre come along." Riccardi said.

To fill Litsch's spot in the rotation, the Jays moved left handed reliver Scott Downs to Litsch's spot in the rotation and called up right handed specialist T.J. Beam to fill Downs' spot. Downs is expected to start Friday in game one of a three game series in Oakland.

"We're excited to have Adrian, and I think with him we have a very real shot at making the playoffs."

Beltre is not expected to play on Friday so his debut in a Jays uniform will be postponed to Saturday.

Beltre happy to be a Jay

OAKLAND, CA (AP) --A day after Adrian Beltre landed in Oakland to meet up with his new Toronto Blue Jays teammates, the locker room was buzzing.

And why shouldn't it be?

It's not everyday your team acquires a perrenial All-Star and basically declares it's goals to make the playoffs. Yet, that's exactly what Blue Jays managemant -- spearheaded by G.M. J.P. Riccardi -- did the morning of the trade deadline after they completed a trade that will send the 4 time All Star to Toronto for Jesse Litsch, Jesse Carlson and a prospect.

"I think that with the addition of Beltre, this team is a playoff team for sure." Riccardi said.

What does Beltre think of all this talk of playoffs and pennants?

"I'll just try my best to hold my own," Laughed the modest Beltre who has hit 213 home runs over an eight year career with the Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, "I don't want to make any guarantees when I haven't even put the uniform on yet."

Beltre will make his debut tomorrow afternoon at third base versus the Oakland Athletics, a game the Jays will use to try and springboard into August on a good note and to extend there season long eight game win streak they have going. He has hit 17 home runs and drove in 64 runs this year while hitting .275, primarily in the cleanup spot for the power hungry Mariners. Jays Manager Cito Gaston is expected to also bat him cleanup, behind the hot handed Vernon Wells, who had 25 RBIs in the month of July alone.

"I'm definetely excited to be played with talented guys here, I think this team can go far." Said Beltre before realizing he had just made a guarantee. Now, you would think the modest Beltre would rescind his statement and say he meant something else but, not Beltre.

"I don't know how far they could have gotten before, but with me, I know we can go far."

Did Beltre go from modest to confident in one sentence? Such is the way things tend to fly in Birdland lately.
