When a player is amnestied they are sent through an auction like system through the teams. Each team makes a bid and whatever the highest bid is wins. That new contract is then compared to his contract with Orlando. The new team take on however much of the old contract they bid. The Magic pretty much just eat difference, but that contract comes off the books.

This is one of the primary reasons my interest has slipped in the NBA. These players have total control of where they play, regardless of free agency.

Why doesn't the Magic GM just tell Howard 'listen big guy, IF we CHOOSE to trade you, i'll decide where you go based on what's best for the Magic, not what's best for you'.

It's insane.

Unlike most leagues, the players actually have some leverage. Teams that may have better packages won't be willing partners with Orlando because Dwight won't sign there. If the Orlando GM were to no entertain trades, he'd be handcuffing himself to getting nothing. Whatever package he gets, at least it is something and I assume it will contain the added bonus of dumping Hedo's terrible contract

As much as I agree with the fact that it sucks, how is it different than any other sport? The NBA's issue is their salary cap isn't a real salary cap, it's almost as though it doesn't exist.

At least the players are honest and let NBA teams know that they won't re-sign with them, unlike other sports where a guy like Beltran can be traded and then walk. NFL is really the only sport with a good model, and baseball is just as bad as the NBA.

At least in baseball, teams get compensation picks. NBA needs to start allowing compensation picks for when teams lose tier 1 stars. This way, a team can feel okay with letting a player go to free agency as they'll get compensated for it. Then, all the big teams wouldn't be able to sign these free agents unless they offered an MLE, which no star would ever take.

The NBA is an example of a poor financial system made even worse by too much expansion. If there were only 20-24 teams I doubt we'd be having a lot of the same issues.

1. Grant Hill was ready to come to NY until the Knicks lowballed him with a $2.5 mil over 1 year offer. He ended up returning to PHX with a $6.5 mil, 1 year deal.

2. The Magic are apparently still considering filing tampering charges against the Nets. If there is proof somewhere that anyone with the Nets met with Howard Thursday, they are looking at serious consequences. Suspensions of team officials, loss of draft picks, fines, etc.

3. The Knicks will send G Andy Rautins and a trade exception ($11-$13 mil) to the Mavericks for C Tyson Chandler in a sign and trade. The Mavs will then buy out Rautins.

Could Dallas be building up assets to acquire Howard?


4. The Knicks are expected to sign 2010 2nd round pick C Jerome Jordan and bring him to the NBA. The 7-footer has played in Slovenia since last season.

5. The Wizards are expected to acquire C Ronny Tauriaf from NY, possibly for a 2nd round draft pick. This deal must go down before the Knicks can officially acquire Chandler from Dallas (along with Billups being waived via amnesty clause).

More issues I have with the NBA system. These buyouts are bullshit.

The worst is around the trade deadline, where teams give away half the roster for nothing, and then veteran players refuse to report thus forcing a buyout. Then they sign with a contender.

What was the point of this lockout again?
