NFL Week 2 Random Thoughts

Two predictions for this week that might be against conventional wisdom:

-Eagles beat the Ravens by at least 6
-Rams upset the Redskins

CJ Spiller put the team on his back in this game. Fitzmagic got better as the game went on but came out a bit rusty. He was constantly throwing his balls at the receivers shins. Leodis McKelvin housed a punt return for 6. Buffalo's defense got to Cassel on demand. 5 sacks. 2 turnovers. Just a great game overall for Buffalo.

Very close game, a nail-biter to be sure. Officiating was terrible for both sides however. Rams appear to be off to a good start under Fisher, and I especially enjoyed seeing Amendola today. He's going to be a player to watch for sure.

Dean Pees is an awful defensive coordinator. I thought Greg Mattison was bad, but on his worst days he never called as poor a game as Pees did today. Fucking gutless coward with constant three man rushes, and apparently forgetting about Celek all day long. Next week won't be pretty if this jackass calls the Patriots game like he did this one.

i didnt think they were to bad last week. but i agree that they are getting worse. This week was full of some incredibly bad calls. Plus they dont seem to know the rules. For instance, stopping the clock on an incomplete pass. 3 times they allowed the clock to run when it should have been stopped in the browns/bengals game. They caught it 2 of the 3 times and fixed it...but dam, thats basic rules 101

browns offense looked real good today. Weeden has a rocket arm and looked great. Did enough to win. Richardson got some blocking today and was a beast out there both running and catching. Unforgettably the defense was pathetic. Haden and Sheldon Brown out and they back ups got fucked. I blame the scheme defensivly for some of that....but its these players inability to make tackles and play fundamental coverage

Yes, the officiating was an absolute joke. They need to get the real refs back ASAP. RG III is going to be an absolute beast (he already kind of is only two games in).

I would be worried about Cam Cameron's play calls near the end of the game more than anything else.

I'm really way more concerned with the defense. I think the offense is ok, even though Cameron is a joke, with Flacco and the receivers they have along with Rice and Leach, they are going to put points up more often than not. The D gave up almost 500 yards to an Eagles team that had it's two starting WRs hurting and lost two starting OL during the course of the game. This defense can not generate pressure rushing three or four guys, they just don't have the personnel, yet that's what this assclown of a coordinator did the entire game.

But do they have the talented personnel to rush the passer effectively? Their secondary is much more of a strength than their front seven right now, with Suggs out and Johnson gone, so they essentially risk hanging their secondary out to dry without generating much of a pass-rush or just dropping those guys into coverage and seeing what happens. The problem with that is that receivers will eventually get open.

Or you can look at it as trusting the secondary to do their job when you rush 5/6 guys. Webb is one of the best corners in the game and Smith is solid, they have Reed and Pollard on the back end and Williams is a decent #3. No question that is the strongest unit on the team, as you said. Also, like you said, the problem is that no DB can cover a guy forever. No matter how good Webb is, if a QB has 5, 6 seconds to stand back there and look over the field like Vick did today, the guy he's covering is going to work his way open. I'd rather see them bring additional guys in an effort to get after the QB than play passive defensive football.
