NHL offers 50/50 split

This is pretty much the first deal that isn't fully laughable from the NHL and its becoming quite clear owners are starting to pressure bettman into getting a deal done. I lol about him wanting to get a full season in like the fans want. No gary I'm pretty sure the leafs/rangers and habs ownership groups are yelling loudly at you to put a 50/50 deal in place so they can go back to jumping into their money bins every morning.

Pretty much I guess. But what sticks in my craw is the way NHL fans have orgasm'd over this offer to the extent that the players are going to get no credit or backing now. They are still taking a loss on the deal even if they end up 50-50 and minus any new restrictions on free agency. More worryingly to be honest, this doesn't address fundamental issues that the owners refuse to look at i.e the teams that still won't make a profit even with a new, lower cap-ceiling.

I don't think hockey fans have orgasmed over this because its "the right deal". We just want our fucking hockey back.

The league quite simply is not going to address some of the key issues. We'll lose the entire season or have scab players before the league will concede that it has teams in markets that aren't viable for a hockey team and either move those or contract.

Fans don't want another 2004 and fans don't really give a flying fuck anymore about who gets what money. Its odd how especially in this work stoppage the fan support behind both parties seems to be little as most people see the entire process has a massive waste of time. I know I do anyways. I partly blame the PA for stalling so much and taking their time and I blame the NHL because bettman just doesn't seem to care.

The other thing too is fans are seeing 50/50 split and are also seeing how the other leagues agree'd on the same thing and are having high hopes. I'm sure the smaller issues like second contract will start in the 2nd year, 5 year max deals, cap space trading ect ect are the things that are going to have to be hammered out over the next week. At the very minimum this seems to be the most promising offer the NHL has proposed yet. Remember the first offer was an almost 20% reduction in salaries and a roll back. I think the roll back was the biggest gripe back then.

Going down rom 57 to 50 isn't bad, and the players will probably see very little in salary reduction because of it. If you look at some of the contracts players sign, they are getting a lot more then what they are worth.

Mostly because of the loophole, and most of the teams right before the lockout signed these deals hoping for a rollback on salaries. However, teams have kept a lot of their players through those loaded deals, and in turn, those players who do hit FA end up being overpaid as well.

And they also are not happy with the negative reaction the fans are having towards them now. Some tend to think this 50/50 split was a PR move by the NHL to get fans on their side, because no the players are under huge pressure to make a deal happen.

Do the players and the union really believe they had true fan support? Given the choice of players or owners, the average fan is likely to empathize with the players first. But that doesn't mean true support. Yeah, it might suck if the players get a raw deal... but how much are they really suffering? The average NHL player is still a millionaire for every single season they play.

Its rich assholes on one side and rich assholes on the other. Fuck them both.

Perhaps I've missed the discussion somewhere else around here..but what exactly is it about the NHL/NHLPA relationship that seemingly leads to a lockout/strike/stoppage every 4-5 years? You'd think with the momentum the sport seems to have recently with fan popularity going up(it's going up right?) and with what they've lost because of previous stoppages(ESPN etc) that they'd get their shit together better....

Maybe my perception is just off here but it seems like the league that can't afford to not have it's shit together from a fan/interest perspective seemingly has it's shit a mess every few seasons.

I was reading this stuff about honouring contracts. It appears that the league has offered a mechanism where contracts are guaranteed based on growth. So for example, the players won't get paid their current guaranteed contracts based on a 50-50 split of $3.3bn, however they could honour the current contracts based on a 50-50 split of $3.9bn. So essentially the players are being asked to exceed expectations and grow the league once again to get what they have already been offered and accepted contractually.
