NHL offers 50/50 split

I was reading this stuff about honouring contracts. It appears that the league has offered a mechanism where contracts are guaranteed based on growth. So for example, the players won't get paid their current guaranteed contracts based on a 50-50 split of $3.3bn, however they could honour the current contracts based on a 50-50 split of $3.9bn. So essentially the players are being asked to exceed expectations and grow the league once again to get what they have already been offered and accepted contractually.

This is one issue you kind of have to side with the players. Owners offered them the money, it is a binding agreement. They can't just say we are talking it back now. This is where some of these deals should have been looked at and voided, and stop letting insane deals go through. That is on the owners for letting it happen. I bet at least half the players who have these insane deals will be looking to be traded at some point during it. coughrobertocough.

God I hate the amazing progression being made. You just want to slap ever NHLPA guy, because they basically all have big troll faces on. The conversation might as well be like this.

They need to get a mediator in this shit and clear this up. Training camp was suppose to start tomorrow, but that isn't happening, and at this point, this season is gone. The only last hope would be the saving of the Winter Classic. If they can save that, there might be a season. But at this point, players won't move off 57%, and if they do move off it, they want a sick bunch of things in return. Not all blame on them, as the owners offering insane contracts didn't help. Hopefully I get some details next week on what is going on.

And the deal is of the job, and back to square one again. Winter Classic is the only thing holding it together right now I think. The NHL does not want that to get dropped. IMO if the league didn't do the Winter Classic, the season probably would have been cancelled.

Although there was limited communication between NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly over the weekend, the stalemate between the sides continues, making it likely that the Winter Classic will be canceled.

Daly said Monday that the two sides had no plans to meet but that the league is ready and willing to meet as soon as necessary.

"No new news. We withdrew our most recent proposal on Friday, and now we are spending time thinking about our next proposal and how best to get closer to a resolution," Daly said by email. "We hope the union is doing the same thing. Given the fact that the union refused even to discuss our last proposal, it would appear that we still have a large gulf to bridge."

The league and union have not resumed negotiations since swapping proposals in Toronto almost two weeks ago, and it seems clear that the impasse is not close to ending.

Fehr denied that the union is not willing to play ball.

"Since the last bargaining meeting on Oct. 18, we have consistently made it clear to the League that we are ready to meet and are willing to discuss all ideas, certainly including their last proposal," he told ESPN.com. "The league has unfortunately continued to decline to meet. Their position makes it difficult to move the process forward, as it is obviously hard to make progress without talking."

Since rejecting the union's trio of proposals, the league has made two rounds of game cancellations. The latest, announced on Friday, wiped out the regular-season schedule for November. A source familiar with the league's plan told ESPNNewYork.com that the league is expected to cancel the Winter Classic on Thursday, the source said.

Even if tensions between the two sides thaw, Mother Nature would make it tough for the sides to resume negotiations in New York this week because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The storm is moving in to the city later Monday; mass transit and schools have been suspended, and the city has ordered hundreds of thousands to evacuate.

NHLPA executive director Don Fehr is back in Toronto, the union's nerve center. Fehr had plans to fly to Minnesota to meet with players on Monday.

Winter Classic is suppose to be cancelled this week, probably by Thursday. NHL has an escape clause in the contract with the school that they can get out of the Classic by Nov. 3 and it only costs them their $100,000 deposit on the stadium. Anything beyond that, they are on the hook for a bunch of stuff. If Winter Classic is cancelled, so are all the other games at Comerica Park.

While the players believe Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs is calling the shots, an educated guess at the final group includes but may not be limited to Anaheim, Columbus, Florida, the Islanders, Phoenix, St. Louis, Washington and Dallas -- enough to block any agreement from getting done (It's tough to lock it down because owners are forbidden to discuss this stuff. Attempts to talk to a couple were politely shot down).

It's probably because he realizes that his NBA team will suck and is just going to be a money pit. But I do agree with you, Leonsis should be acting better than this.

The NHL will probably dwindle away, or at least dilute into something joke-worthy. The NHL rides on its sponsors and sudden momentum, but with this lockout it ends momentum and sponsors will want to disassociate themselves with the league due its unpredictability and mediocrity.

The players have now shifted from bitching about losing money and honouring contracts to bitching about losing their contract rights meaning they don't want no cap on how long deals are for and how long players are RFA's for and such. Crosby specifically hinted at that the NHL clearly wants to limit those insane 2nd year deals and the players don't want to change it at all because they feel players should have all the right in the world to sign for whatever they want.

By the sounds of it what they are whining about now is the 2 year Entry level deal, the 5 year cap on contract lengths, limit on the year to year salary increase/decrease bs that gm's try to do and ufa starting at 8 full years or 28 years old.

The absolute bullshit about this continues to make me lean more and more towards the owner and makes me believe more and more that Fehr is a total mess to the PA and if he continues to head it the sport is going to move even more behind to the point where womens wheelchair basketball will have better coverage.

I kind of disagree, and not because I think the idea is wrong, (we talked about in the CB how they should make hockey like soccer in europe) but rather simply because the players now would not see any benefit to playing in Europe. The arena's at these games are only getting 3000-5000 fans, and guys like Rick Nash are playing in nearly empty arenas. The teams in Europe are years away from even thinking of paying the money the NHL guys would want. So unless players want to make a modest 'regular joe' salary, they are not going to make the money over there.

So I think it works both ways. The owners need the players back because they are not making money with empty seats. The players need the owners because they are willing to pay them the top salary for the best players in the world.
