Stafford has been unimpressive these first two games. He missed a wide open Pettigrew late in the 4th and ended up getting sacked. I mean Pettigrew was literally right in front of him.

That said, we were somehow in that game last night had we been able to stop the 49ers on one of three 3rd and longs. I knew we were bad in the secondary, but that was pathetic. Also, the d-line isn't doing enough to make up for the lack of a secondary.

The Lions are showing that avoiding defense at the top of the draft has major repercussions. People are claiming Mayhew is doing a good job as GM, but a lot of our first and second round picks in his regime aren't contributing and surely aren't helping defensively.

AP voter: Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson not an All-Pro because wins are more important
Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson breaking Jerry Rice's single-season receiving record wasn't enough for him to be unanimously selected to the All-Pro team.

Forty-nine out of 50 voters put Johnson on their ballot.

Tim Ryan, an analyst for Fox Sports and Sirius XM Radio, came to the conclusion that Johnson's season was just third best amongst NFL receivers in 2012, because he values more than just the numbers.

"Of course he had a great year and he is a great receiver, but I look at more than statistics and I thought a couple of other receivers had a better season, Brandon Marshall and A.J. Green," Ryan told The Sports Xchange.

"Johnson was targeted a lot and was often the only thing the Lions had going, but he also dropped a lot of passes and they did lose 12 games. I felt Marshall helped Chicago win games, and Green helped Cincinnati win games. I think that is more important than statistics."

Johnson led the NFL with 205 targets, 11 ahead of Chicago's Marshall. He finished with 122 receptions for 1,964 yards and five touchdowns.

Cincinnati's Green finished with 97 catches for 1,350 yards and 11 touchdowns while helping the Bengals to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth.

According to Pro Football Talk, Johnson averaged 93 yards a game in the three games that Ryan served as an analyst (Rams, Seahawks and Cardinals).

High school coach Scott Mitchell cancels game to rest for playoffs

Former Dolphins, Lions, Ravens and Bengals quarterback Scott Mitchell is now a high school coach in Utah. And he’s drawing attention this week for an unusual decision to call off one of his team’s games.

Mitchell’s Springville squad is 7-1 and had already clinched a spot in the state playoffs, and the team he was scheduled to play next week, Mountain Crest, is 6-2 and wouldn’t have its playoff hopes affected by a the game with Springville. So Mitchell called the Mountain Crest coach and proposed that they just cancel the game to rest both teams up for bigger games down the road. Mountain Crest agreed, and so the game was called off — but not everyone in Utah likes the decision.

“We have a lot of guys who are banged up, and I’m not sure how productive we would have been in the game,” Mitchell said. “I don’t really care what people think. I’m focused on the playoffs, because we’re already seeded where we’re going to be seeded. It’s not going to change at all. I just wanted to be as fresh and healthy as possible going into the playoffs.”

It’s a good thing Mitchell doesn’t care what people think, because I think it stinks. If you’ve got injured players, by all means, keep them on the sideline. But how about going through with the game and allowing some of your backups to get some playing time?

Mountain Crest was happy to go along with Mitchell’s plan because it gives Mountain Crest more time to prepare for Sky View in a game that will determine a playoff spot. Sky View coach Craig Anhder, however, said that while the schools can call off the game if they want, he wouldn’t do it.

“I just think if you schedule a game, you should play it,” Anhder said.

Anhder is right. Mitchell shouldn’t have proposed calling off the game, the other coach shouldn’t have agreed, and their bosses shouldn’t have allowed it. If you schedule a game, you should play it.

I don't even know who Tim Ryan is. Calvin is the best player in the league. Sadly, his talent is being wasted as the three fuck knuckles who are somehow allowed to call plays retain their jobs.

I'm glad we made a bunch of token moves too so far this offseason. Special teams guy had to go, but I don't get firing Shawn Jefferson (WRs coach). He's worked with Calvin basically his whole career and its not fault he lost his next three guys. They were all just scapegoats for Linehan and Schwartz.

Yea the Shawn Jefferson was definitely a head scratching move to say the least. I'm surprised he hasn't been swooped up by another team yet...unless he has and I just didn't see anything on it.

Guy on the right. He does Fox broadcasts with Chris Myers. He made some snide comment at the end of the year about Lions fans being used to being patient in regards to Myers' question about Schwartz making fans impatient.

[Size=+2]Report: Detroit Lions to hire veteran defensive line coach Jim Washburn[/Size]

MOBILE, Ala. -- USA Today's Mike Garafolo is reporting the Detroit Lions will hire Jim Washburn as a defensive assistant. The move has yet to be officially announced by the team.

Washburn has 14 years of NFL experience, all as a defensive line coach. He most recently held the role in Philadelphia, but was relieved of his duties in the middle of last season after the Eagles lost eight straight and the team's defensive line was under-performing.

Prior to Philadelphia, Washburn worked 12 seasons with the Tennessee Titans, overlapping with Jim Schwartz's entire eight-year tenure as the team's defensive coordinator.

The Lions defensive line is currently coached by Kris Kocurek, who is entering his fifth year in Detroit. There was no indication his role with the team is changing. He was coaching the defensive line for the South squad at the 2013 Senior Bowl on Monday.

During Washburn's time in Tennessee, the Titans finished in the top 10 in sacks eight times. In 2011, his first year in Philadelphia, the Eagles led the NFL with 51 sacks.

Washburn is known for his heavy utilization of the Wide-9 defensive end alignment, further illustrating the Lions have no plans of significantly reduce the use of the technique in their current 4-3 defensive scheme. He had this to say during an interview with the Philadelphia media last year.

"Everybody talks about the Wide 9, but we just move a guy three feet. It's 54 percent pass on first down. I can get a 290-pounder out there to play the run 100 times better than I(Jason) Babin or Phillip Hunt and you're conceding 54 percent of the time, but what we want is to have our cake and eat it too. Want to be able to get in a position where you can pass-rush and play the run equally well. We've been the top two or three in the league in rush defense playing the same front. There's some snakes into every defense you play. You play 3-4, there's some places they can get you. I just think after a year we know where the snakes are."

In a unique twist, Washburn will join his son Jeremiah in Detroit. Jeremiah was recently promoted by Schwartz to be the team's offensive line coach.

I actually think this signing is going to play a bigger role in Detroit than many others think it is. :golfclap:

He needs to be gone as soon as possible. Trade him for nothing if we have to. Mayhew/Schwartz need to make a statement that this kind of behavior won't be tolerated. Discipline has been a big issue for us and getting rid of Young sends the right message. However, I believe Schwartz said after the season he might give Young another chance which is ridiculous.

Infamously disruptive teammate Terrell Owens is telling Detroit Lions' wide receiver Titus Young he needs to be a better teammate.

Asked about Young's situation while attending a PBA tour event in Allen Park, Owens' response short and sweet.

"He has to understand that Calvin (Johnson is) the No. 1 receiver, and being the No. 2 receiver, you have to go with the flow of the offense, and when your time comes, make the plays," Owens told the Detroit News.

There you have it. Owens believes Young needs to stop being selfish.

Owens, a third-round draft pick out of Chattanooga in 1996, knows something about playing second fiddle to start a career. For his first two seasons in San Francisco, Owens was the No. 2 option in San Francisco before overtaking the legendary Jerry Rice.

Owen went on to be one of the most productive receivers in NFL history. He is one of just eight players to catch more than 1,000 passes. He ranks second in career receiving yardage and third in touchdowns, behind only Rice and Randy Moss.

But beyond Owens on-field success, it was his antics on the sideline and off-the-field that often made the biggest headlines. He publicly questioned his coaches and quarterbacks on a number of occasions. While holding out for a bigger contract in Philadelphia, he conducted interviews with reporters while doing sit-ups in his driveway.

Young's not exactly doing sit-ups in his driveway, but his recent Twitter rants threatening retirement and begging to be cut are similar as public spectacles.

Owens' comments echo sentiments previously expressed by veteran Lions receiver Nate Burleson, who has repeatedly said the key to Young succeeding in Detroit is learning to complement Johnson.

"He comes in and he wants to be the man, he wants to shine," Burleson said about Young. "He feels like he can help the team any given play. He's an I'm-always-open guy and I like that about his personality. It's just when you're playing with (Calvin Johnson), you have to adjust. You never heard (Scottie) Pippen saying, 'Let me lead the team in scoring.' It's (Michael) Jordan's show."

The Ravens aren’t finished partying yet, but the rest of the league is moving on with offseason business.

The Lions have made a second cut already, parting ways with right guard Stephen Peterman, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. They released wide receiver Titus Young because he was a pain in the rear, but Peterman’s release was more about the wallet.

The 31-year-old Peterman had started every game at right guard the last three seasons, but the Lions are looking to get younger and cheaper there.

It could be the start of a makeover for a group that didn’t exactly help Matt Stafford last year. Right tackle Gosder Cherilus is a free agent, left tackle Jeff Backus turns 36 and they have last year’s first-rounder Riley Reiff waiting in the wings after spending last year as a reserve.

Cutting Peterman keeps the Lions from paying a $500,000 roster bonus, and carves $3.2 million worth of salary cap space off the books for a team with many bigger deals to do.
