If the only way to get into the "dance" is by winning your conference then OOC games are completely pointless. Other than the money you'd get by playing them but I'd be willing to bet most schools would forgo an early season payday in order to try and not have any players get hurt/worn for games that may "pop" for a TV viewer really don't matter at all in terms of determining a champion at the end of the year. You might see teams play a game or two against some scrub FCS team as a tune up and then hop right into meaningful conference play.

That's why you need to add a few at large spots in the playoff.

No. Get rid of rankings all together. OOC games would no longer matter if I had my way/set up so they'd be useless and pointless. The system would no longer be objective(if you still had rankings/at larges). I will never support a college football playoff system with at larges, that uses rankings or formulas to determine the teams, etc. It'd just be a half assed attempt at polishing a turd.

Um no, that doesn't apply as we don't have conference tourneys in football. If you create a playoff system using conference champs then surely the regular season importance is increased because every single conference game would matter.

And the OOC games wouldn't matter. Why would a team want to play Texas when instead, they could play San Jose St and not risk losing or injury since most starters would be out at the half? And hey, even if they do lose, no biggie, in fact, they could lose all 4 OOC games and still make the tournament with a good enough conference record. That would make a third of the season completely pointless.

It's not completely meaningless. To me College football is the one sport where it's not really "title or bust" I can watch games with absolutely zero title complications and be perfectly content.

For Georgia, VT and ND the rest of their year is about teaching young players and impressing recruits. They'll still have meaningful games, just not ones with title implications. I'm perfectly content with that.
