DEFENSE----

GAME PLAY - DEFENSIVE RULES

1. Manual Movement of Defenders Pre-Snap:

You may move ONE and ONLY ONE player manually pre-snap, and once that player is moved, you MUST maintain control of that player until the ball is snapped. The following also apply:

• Defensive linemen may NOT be moved manually side to side, “picked off the line”, or dropped into coverage until after the ball is snapped. This includes punts and field goals.

• If you choose to move a LB, you may move him side to side, or up 5 yards from his current spot AND SLIGHTLY BACK. You may not drop a LB into deep pass coverage pre-snap. We do not want to see linebackers standing at safety depth.

• If you choose to move a CB or Safety, you may move him anywhere on the field outside of the LB box. You may NOT manually blitz or “speed rush” the QB with a manually-controlled CB or Safety.

2. Defensive Playmaker and Shifts:

• All shifts, LB, DB, DL, are all allowed.

• 8/9 In the Box: You can only put 8/9 men in the box if you are running 4-3, 3-4, 46, or Goal line. There is no reason to come out in Nickel, Dime or Quarter and go into 8 in the box, it’s just like subbing DB's in at LB in a 46. The offense will not be audibling down, so there is no need to do this in any other formation.

• TRIANGLE RIGHT(9 in the box): Can only be used on plays for less than 3 yards and on 3rd or 4th down only or anytime your opponent is 10 yards from scoring. This play must not be abused or it'll get banned completely, using it more than 25% is abusing it.

• Shifting DE+LB's: You can shift them however you want, but you cannot keep shifting them back and forth so that they are in a weird position when the ball is snapped. Shift them, and leave em there. If your opponent audibles, by all means shift. But don't be shifting back and forth, back and forth, etc.

• Defensive Line Rushing the QB: There must be at leasr 2 defensive lineman rushing the quarterback (this includes de's in contain) on every play. You are welcome to drop DL into zone coverage but we do not want to see one defensive lineman rushing the QB. Little unrealistic guys.

• Defensive Playmaker: This will be allowed now that the Run/Pass tell glitch has been fixed.

• Blitzing. You may blitz on any given play. We do not limit when you or how many times you can blitz but don’t blitz every play. You shouldn’t be blitzing more then 50% of the total plays called in the game. EA Stats will show if you are blitzing that much and you will be warned and if it happens again removed.

3. Manual Control of Players Post-Snap:
It is widely known that Madden does not penalize defenders for pass interference the way we all would envision.
You MAY manually control defenders to “make a play”, but you may NOT purposely interfere or “bump” the receiver past 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. Sometimes it happens accidentally, but if you are doing it repeatedly expect to be subject to league penalties.

4. You may not Audible down from QTRS or DIME defense to any other defense at any time UNLESS....The offense employs the no-huddle.

4.1 THE USE OF DIME, QTRS, 335 DEFENSES

A) Dime vs 3,4,5 wide sets only. You cannot audible down to any other defense when using dime.

Quarters defense vs 4 and 5 wide sets only. You cannot audible down to any other defense out of qtrs. KEEP IN MIND, IN OBVIOUS PASSING DOWNS YOU MAY BE IN ANY DEFENSE YOU LIKE!

Try and match up defensive formations to offensive formations EX: 4-3 vs. 2WR sets or Dime vs. 4WR sets.
• Quarter is to be only used vs. 4 and 5 WR.


5. Bump and Run: You may use the bump and run, but do not overuse the bump and run. Do not use it as the base of your defense. Cover 2 zone is allowed, but overuse of the BnR will result in a league penalty, and possible removal. Too many people just simply spread the line, blitz, and bnr and that’s their base of their defense. Not happening in VSSML fellas.

6. Defensive Line Looping (Speed Rush Rule)

• You can spread the defensive line but no more that (2) Two time per first down.
****Due to the overuse of spreading and looping your line and controlling your defensive end to speed rush the QB and get in untouched, we setup a rule to prevent "speed rushing" and un-realistic amounts of sacks and pressure. If you spread your defensive line at any time, you CANNOT control the defensive end. After the play has developed and the Defensive End has passed the O-Line and is in pursuit, you can then switch back to the Defensive End to finish off a sack, or to chase a quarterback, running back, whatever. Bottom line is that if you spread your line, you cannot speed rush and get cheap sacks. Only way you can control the defensive end is if you do NOT spread your defensive line.

GAME PLAY - SPECIAL TEAMS RULES

1. XP, FG, Punt Return Defense: You cannot move any defenders pre-snap. FG block, XP block.

2. Fair Catch Interference: When receiving a punt, you may NOT intentionally call for a fair catch and then run into the opponent’s special team’s player to induce a 15 yard penalty. This is not sim and will not be allowed. If you do this by mistake, simply decline the penalty. Do not attempt to block the punt cover with your returner.

we would like to have 32 guys, but i think 16 will be realistic for a first season, we will be doing 2 games a week to start. more to come.
 
Ok do you think the games could be on like Friday, Saturday and or Sunday?

Because people have school and may be busy. But good rules.
 
i would liek to do 2 games a week for an 8 week peior to get a 16 week schedule in. if we use league daddy you will not be required to pitch in.
 
I read over the rules, and there were a few that I was concerned with:

9. PLAY ACTION:

People that abuse this are making it suck for the rest of the league. If you don’t have a running game established don’t even bother with the PA. Don’t use it on 3rd, 4th and longs (long is considered anything more than 6 yards). Use it in a sim way otherwise you will get a warning the first complaint and receive player suspensions for any future complaints. Owner, before filing a complaint, please pause the game and let your opponent know how you feel. BE NICE! :]

***NEVER, EVER RUN BACK TO BACK PLAY ACTIONS***
IF AN OWNER BREAKS THIS RULE IN A LEAGUE GAME HE MUST IMMEDIATLY PUNT TO HIS OPPONENT

I don't understand how this could be a problem. Using play-action is to bait the defense into thinking it's a running play, but it is ALSO to give the receivers extra time to get into their patterns. In certain situations, like the ones listed above, it is almost beneficial to use play-action to let the routes develop.

A simple counter to this is to pass commit on defense.

(regards to 4th quarter play)
• If you’re winning by more than 21 points, you must punt or kick a field goal if in range of one.

I can see where this rule came from, but there are certain instances where I'm trying to kill the game out and I'm faced with a 4th and 3, and if I convert I can seal the deal. I know this is a rare occurance, but I'd hate to go for it and finish the game only to find that my opponent reported me for abusing this rule.

Again, I can see where these rules are coming from, but let me again explain a counter example. If somebody is using a bunch formation, and I'm bringing an overload blitz to the bunch side, the player covering the TE in the bunch is usually nowhere near the TE (he's usually on the other side of the defensive formation). If this is the case, I will move him over, and then go back to playing my position, so I would hate to be reported for doing something like this as well.

This rule I just flat out disagree with. If I drop two linemen in coverage, and blitz two LBs in their place, Madden considers that a blitz (when in actuality it's a 4 man rush). Likewise, a good way to mix up the coverage is to intimidate the offense with a heavy rush. I don't know where my blitz % number is at or would be at, but I think that with the other limitations we have in place for defense (to avoid nano blitzes and what not), it should be ok for somebody to bring the heat at any given time.

4. Defensive Play calling: Be realistic. If someone comes out in a 2-wide, 2-back, 1-te set. Don’t come out in Quarter or Dime.

The final rule I disagree with is this one. If somebody is just slinging the rock all over the place, I'm jumping into a dime coverage. But this is to my disadvantage, because they could run all over me. I guess I'm lost as to why this rule is necessary, because I think if the defense is dumb enough to do it, then I deserve that advantage over my opponent. And there are instances when - outside of the 2-minute blocks and 3rd and long - you know the offense is going to pass. I should not be restricted in my play-calling in these instances.


I wanted to come to a consensus about these rules, so I'd like to hear some other thoughts on them or about what I said.
 
(regards to 4th quarter play)
• If you’re winning by more than 21 points, you must punt or kick a field goal if in range of one.

I can see where this rule came from, but there are certain instances where I'm trying to kill the game out and I'm faced with a 4th and 3, and if I convert I can seal the deal. I know this is a rare occurance, but I'd hate to go for it and finish the game only to find that my opponent reported me for abusing this rule.

why woulld you need to go for it to seal the game? your up 21 points and a fg makes it 24. it would be unrealistic to go for it up 21 points.

1. Manual Movement of Defenders Pre-Snap:

You may move ONE and ONLY ONE player manually pre-snap, and once that player is moved, you MUST maintain control of that player until the ball is snapped.

Again, I can see where these rules are coming from, but let me again explain a counter example. If somebody is using a bunch formation, and I'm bringing an overload blitz to the bunch side, the player covering the TE in the bunch is usually nowhere near the TE (he's usually on the other side of the defensive formation). If this is the case, I will move him over, and then go back to playing my position, so I would hate to be reported for doing something like this as well.

• Blitzing. You may blitz on any given play. We do not limit when you or how many times you can blitz but don’t blitz every play. You shouldn’t be blitzing more then 50% of the total plays called in the game. EA Stats will show if you are blitzing that much and you will be warned and if it happens again removed.

This rule I just flat out disagree with. If I drop two linemen in coverage, and blitz two LBs in their place, Madden considers that a blitz (when in actuality it's a 4 man rush). Likewise, a good way to mix up the coverage is to intimidate the offense with a heavy rush. I don't know where my blitz % number is at or would be at, but I think that with the other limitations we have in place for defense (to avoid nano blitzes and what not), it should be ok for somebody to bring the heat at any given time.

this rule is basically to keep guys from running a blitz every play. you can blitz on any down, there are no limits on how many per 4 downs.

4. Defensive Play calling: Be realistic. If someone comes out in a 2-wide, 2-back, 1-te set. Don’t come out in Quarter or Dime.

The final rule I disagree with is this one. If somebody is just slinging the rock all over the place, I'm jumping into a dime coverage. But this is to my disadvantage, because they could run all over me. this rule is too keep people from running dime or quarter blitzes all game against 2 wide. I actually meant to amend that rule it should say this:
4. You may not Audible down from QTRS or DIME defense to any other defense at any time UNLESS....The offense employs the no-huddle.

4.1 THE USE OF DIME, QTRS, 335 DEFENSES

A) Dime vs 3,4,5 wide sets only. You cannot audible down to any other defense when using dime.

Quarters defense vs 4 and 5 wide sets only. You cannot audible down to any other defense out of qtrs. KEEP IN MIND, IN OBVIOUS PASSING DOWNS YOU MAY BE IN ANY DEFENSE YOU LIKE!

Just to finish the game. Usually when it's late and I'm draining clock, I'll go for it on 4th just to maintain possession of the ball and kneel on it. The field goal is pointless, I'd rather just end the game right there.

That doesn't make it a good rule. I think the rule should state that you can move two players, but you have to control the second guy. Being a SIM league, it will scare away a lot of nano-blitzers and rule benders anyway. The only reason I'd move a guy is to make sure he's not ridiculously out of position.

Reread what you just said. If I can blitz any down with no limit on how many times per 4-downs, why can't I blitz every play?

this is the VSSML mission staement:

All participants in the Virtual Sports Sim Madden League are required to display exemplary conduct. Good sportsmanship, pride, honesty, integrity, and commitment are not suggested, but rather demanded. Not upholding to these guidelines, the ones listed below, or anything the commissioner feels could be harmful to the league, will not be tolerated and will result in immediate removal.
 
The pre-snap defensive movement is a good rule. If you bring the blitz and the guy covering the TE is on the other side, then dont call that blitz. No NFL team would ahve there LB move to the other side and have the ENTIRE other side wide open.
 
As far as the rules go (on the defense side)

I don't mind playing against anybody with any style. I honestly think that's makes me a better player. By playing against people who screen/flats all day or work just the middle with curls and everything it makes me more aware and it helps me broaden my playbook and defensive playmaker to counter.

Now my reason for this post is because I run a lot of my base defense out of 3-3-5. I want to get a clear understanding of this rule before everything starts because I don't want to be kicked out or anything.

I also run the base 3-4 wide and the reason I run the 3-3-5 is for fast RB's and or if I have a slower LB on a TE I can have the CB cover the TE and have the LB on the RB. I rather get beat to the sideline than up the field....

I also do use formation audibles and I utilize the "square + R2" play flip. Is this illegal? If I'm bringing a blitz or I myself see a mismatch if i'm playing zone do I have the right to flip a play? I read Offenses like Payton read defenses and like him I make adjustments as needed. This is not saying I move my players around but I'm liable to change the play a few times or formation shift if i suspect something sneaky.

One more thing... Since we are playing on all madden, can we also put the play calling on hardcore mode? Bascially you see who your players are but you don't actually see what weapon they have. You still call your plays normally and to get this go to a exhibition game or something and on the screen where you decide the rewinds and shit it would be there. I think that would force people to use more stragety than any other time. Just a thought
