PSN Is Back Up!

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
* Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Also for what it is worth, some unknown poster at PP claims to have a source at GameStop who indicated the fix/firmware update would be ready by 3/2.

This is my understanding you do not need PSN just the net to get a firmware update.

You don't. All you need is a USB drive and to go to the playstation site for the update. Very easy.

You can do that or just do it through the console, albeit much slower. There isn't a problem with downloading a firmware update through the console since it signs you out of the PSN anyway. I was just at a buddy's house and he had just rented Brutal Legend and there was an update prompt when he inserted the disc. He was able to get the update fine but unable to login to PSN. He has one of the first batch of 40GB fat PS3s that were released. His clock had the right date but the wrong time (bout 3hrs fast).

Like Seth keeps repeating, this is definitely some weirdass, Y2K type shit and as FexEx said, I'm glad I finally managed to dodge a console bullet for once.

Question: Other than slim models being well slim and not having the internal clock issue what is the difference between them and the old/launch PS3s?

Obviously I understand harddrive size. I thought the original PS3s were backwards compatible and the new/slim ones are not.

I had the 60GB Backwards launch PS3 and it worked great for me up until right before Christmas. It had the YLOD and went and purchased a slim a week or so later.

The only differences that I've been able to see are:

Launch Slim
60GB 120GB
4 USB ports 2 USB ports
Backwards Comp. Not
Touch buttons Physical buttons (power on/off, eject)
Fat Slim

As far as performance, I can't tell a difference between the two models. Every piece of functionality is the same.

Dam this seems like a classic cmos battery problem that happends on computers some times.

I'd honestly not turn your PS3's on till they get a fix out for it guys. If its anything like the computer some software will just go nuts if it thinks its the year 2010, then year 1999 and then back to 2010 again so I can see why they said to simply not turn it on and use it.
