Indiana Heads into Bye Week Happy

Bloomington, IN - Finally, after 12 straight weeks of football, the Indiana Hoosiers get a break in the form of their first bye week.

"This is like the happiest day of my life," said Demetrius McCray. "After 12 F***in weeks of football, I finally get a break. Even if it's only for 2 weeks. I mean, two weeks is better than no weeks."

The Hoosiers bye week marks the end of their regular season, as they have no more regular season games. Their next game? A Bowl Game, for the 2nd time in 3 years. But that's not the point of this story. The main point is that with no football game this Saturday, coach Anthony Thompson can finally focus on one thing only; recruiting. And boy, has he done a good job of that. 13 weeks into the season, the Hoosiers have the 2nd most recruits in the nation and the 15th overall recruiting class so far (they'll drop lower once the off-season starts, but that doesn't matter).

"I haven't had a lot of time to focus on my recruits this season, but these next two bye weeks will give me a huge amount of time to contact the people who are going to go to IU," Thompson told reporters early this morning. "I have been having to rush calls to players in between practices and games, and I think they might be getting angry at me for that. So now, I have got all the time in the world."

Indiana has this week and next week off, then an undetermined amount of time until a bowl game. In other words, only 1 game left for the Hoosiers, and no one knows when it will be.

your team played well in my chise Indiana got all the way to like a 5th ranking then fell to like 9 at end of season.

seriously? in most people's chises, the hoosiers go like 3-9 or 2-10. except in 09. in ncaa 09, every time u did a dynasty, indiana started the season 7-0.

<!--[endif]--> Anthony Thompson: Hello, and welcome to "The Anthony Thompson Radio Show." It's me, Anthony Thompson, head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers. And beside me is John Stark, my assistant. Tonight, I will be taking questions from a few lucky fans. So John, who is our first lucky guest?

John Stark: Our first question today is from Timmy, asking, <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message -->"Coach, Indiana has made only 1 Rose Bowl in its history, and that was in 1967. Do you think that your team next year has the potential to make a Rose Bowl run?

Anthony Thompson: Well Timmy, that is a great question. I think in the future, we can be contenders for a Rose Bowl. After a few years in which I have recruited my own players, I think that I can set up a playbook that will dominate opponents, and we will be Big 10 Champions. Next year, probably not. Maybe 2nd or 3rd in the Big 10. 3 or 4 years from now? I think we probably will win the Big 10 by then.

John Stark: Our next question is also from Timmy, asking,"Coach Thompson, are there any steps you are taking to make sure that Indiana remembers deceased former Head Coach Terry Hoeppner?"

Anthony Thompson: I am desperately trying to put him in the Indiana Hall of Fame, even though he didn't coach for very long. He turned the Hoosiers around with his great play-calling and recruiting skills. Some of the stars of the Indiana Hoosiers football team were recruited by Hoeppner. Without his brief tenure at Indiana, we would be struggling to win 3 or 4 games. Thanks to him, we made it to a Bowl Game this year. Also, I am trying to make a "Hoeppner Day," in which fans are allowed on the field and we remember his coaching days. I am currently making a slide show about him so if my wish is granted, I can show it on Hoeppner Day.

John Stark: Our next question is from Packersfan4eva, asking, "You are expected to play Miami in a bowl game. How do you plan to stop them?

Anthony Thompson: To be honest, I haven't scouted the Hurricanes yet. I have no idea what game we will go to, so I am going to wait and see who we play before I start evaluating a team. Say we don't play Miami. I have just spent 2 weeks scouting them for nothing. I don't want to take any chances of that happening.

John Stark: So you have no idea what to do against the Hurricanes?

Anthony Thompson: Correct.

John Stark: Interesting. We will have two more questions, both from Packersfan4eva. It seems that other listeners need to step it up, as we only had 2 people asking questions. Packersfan4eva asks us, "What's the hardest part about recruiting high school kids?"

Anthony Thompson: That's a tough question. To me, I think the hardest part is keeping the recruits happy. Some recruits you can call once every 5 weeks and they stay happy. Others, if you don't call every week, they get angry and will probably turn you down. And sometimes, it takes a while to figure out which guy gets angry and which guy doesn't. If you don't figure it out quickly, you are in trouble.

John Stark: Our final questions, also from Packersfan4eva, asks, "What's your favorite part of being a college football head coach?"

Anthony Thompson: I don't have a favorite part. I love every single minute of coaching, no matter what it is. So I guess my answer would be everything.

CHAMPS SPORTS BOWL CHAMPIONS!

Orlando, FL - After a long, grueling season, the Hoosiers have ended their season on a high note as they upset Miami 27-19 in the Champs Sports Bowl.

Indiana started out badly, as Ben Chappell threw an interception on the Hoosiers first drive, and the Hurricanes went down and scored a touchdown. But after that, Chappell went on a tear. He completed all the rest of his passes in the game (save 2 dropped catches) and threw 3 touchdowns. No interceptions. "I was unstoppable. I don't think I've ever played like that in my life," Chappell said after the game. "I felt like no matter where or how hard I threw the ball, it was a perfect throw. It was unbelievable." "I definitely think it was one of his greatest performances," said Ray Fisher, who throughout this season has been Chappell's go-to-guy. "Every throw was right on target. We didn't have to work very hard. Every route we ran, we didn't even have to look for the ball. We just stuck our arms out and the ball was there. It was amazing."

Not only was the offense on fire, but the defense played an amazing game as well. Especially Mike Mayberry, the senior middle linebacker playing in his last game. He didn't have that many tackles (7, which led the team), but he led the game with 2 interceptions, including the pick that solidified the Hoosiers first bowl game victory in almost 20 years.

"I've never been prouder of these kids." coach Thompson told me after the game. "They played their hearts out, and for some of [the seniors] it's the greatest game that I've ever seen them play in. And I've been watching them since they were tiny little freshman. Well, not really tiny. Just younger."

The Hoosiers hope to pick up where the left off next season.
