Hoosiers Win On Gutsy Call in OT
Iowa City, IA - After a long and tough day of football, Coach Thompson didn't want to coach anymore, so he went for the two point conversion. If he makes it, the Hoosiers win; if he doesn't score the 2 points, the Hoosiers fall to 10th in the Big 10. They made it.
I'll start with how the game got into overtime in the first place. Last week, when Ben Chappell acted up in the locker room after their 55-24 loss to Northwestern, coach Thompson benched him for this game, and in the process making Mitchell Evans the starter. "I was so excited," he said at the post-game press conference. "I thought I wouldn't be able to start of a few more years, but I finally got my opportunity."
It looked like coach had made a huge mistake early on, as Iowa jumped out to a 17-0 lead. But the Hoosiers came storming back, scoring 2 quick touchdowns to make the score 17-14. Iowa booted a 42 yard field goal to make the score 20-14 with 49 seconds to go. Then, a miracle. Duwyce Wilson returned a kickoff for a touchdown. It gave the Hoosiers a lead at the half, momentum, and their first special treams touchdown of the season.
In the 3rd quarter, the Hoosiers stretched out their lead, scoring 10 straight points to make the score 31-20. The Hawkeyes would score on a long touchdown pass, making the score 31-27 as they entered the 4th quarter. Things got ugly then, as Iowa dominated the Hoosiers, taking a 41-38 lead with just over 2 minutes to go. The Hawkeyes quickly drove down field and were about to score, when Indiana's defense finally stepped it up. They stopped them on 3 successive plays, something they hadn't done to any team in quite a while. On 4th and goal, Iowa tried to pass the ball. A most unlikely hero, Donnell Jones, batted away the pass, giving the Hoosiers one last chance to score. While they couldn't score a touchdown, they did manage to kick a field goal and send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, neither team scored a touchdown or field goal. Indiana went for it on 4th and goal and failed, whereas Iowa missed their field goal attempt. In the 2nd overtime, on the 1st play, Iowa ran the ball in for a touchdown. "I was so pissed off," coach Thompson said after the game, "I was contemplating just perposly losing the game there and then. But I knew that would be a bad influence on the rest of my team, so I tried to win." After scoring a touchdown on a 4 yard run by Bryan Payton, Anthony Thompson decided to go for it. And made it. "I was so relieved," he told reporters. The man who made the catch? Brad Martin, whos two catches this season were both key points in a close game.
Indiana has 3 opponants left; one more win sends them to a bowl game.

Fans, Players Can Tryout for Quarterback Job
Bloomington, IN - Anthony Thompson has announced that anyone -- ANYONE! -- can tryout for the quarterback job this week against Wisconsin.
Fans flocked Memorial Field today as the first round of quarterback tryouts were held. At least 500 students and players showed up today to throw for the coaches. "I wanted to see how good I actually was," said one of the students.
Today, all they worked on was basic throwing drills and technique. "I just want to sort out the men who can actually throw the ball reasonably well," coach Thompson told us when asked by reporters. Quarterback Situation Solved, Best QB Not Playing
Bloomington, IN - Anthony Thompson announced on Thursday that Ben Chappell would be starting against the Wisconsin Badgers, but the best quarterback on the team has yet to play.
Chappell has had an off year, throwing a bunch of interceptions and stupid passes. But he is the leader of the Hoosiers team and deserves to start. "He might not be our best player, but he is the clear leader of our team. The whole Hoosiers team plays better with him on the field," said Mitchell Evans, the backup QB. "I played well when I started, but nowhere near as well as Chappell. He is the leader of Indiana, not me."
But strangely enough, the coaches and players don't think Chappell is the best player on the Hoosiers. The unanimous decision for best quarterback on the Hoosiers was freshman wide receiver Jamonne Chester, who was red shirted this season. "I feel that I'm a very good wide receiver and an even better quarterback," he told analysts on Wednesday. "I think I might even be the best [on the Indiana Hoosiers]."
We will have to wait until next year to see how good Jamonne Chester really is, but for now, he is the best quarterback on the Indiana Hoosiers football team. He might even be one of the best Freshman quarterbacks in the Big 10.

the only reason mitchell evans didn't throw any interceptions was beacuse he never threw near the wrs or the dbacks. he couldn't throw worth shit. 95% of chappell's ints are when he's dropping back and gets hit as he throws and the ball pops up into the air. he's a better qb.
the freshman wr's overall is 87 at qb, whereas chappell's is 85. LOL

definitely. although since jamonne chester is redshirted, he'll still be a freshman next year. he's our best guy so far, and i can't wait to use him next year. i'll probably try and snag a qb or 2 next season

Indiana Locks Bid for Bowl Game
Bloomington, IN - Because the Hoosiers beat the Wisconsin Badgers and improved their overall record to 7-3, they have officially locked an appearance in a bowl game this year.
The Hoosiers, who haven't won a bowl game since the late 80s, made it to the Insight Bowl against Oklahoma State in 2007, only to get crushed 49-33. "I remember watching that game on TV," coach Thompson told the media yesterday. "Indiana started out playing well, scoring a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Then they fell apart and game up 28 points in a row. I punched my new Hi-def TV while watching and broke my hand. It was worth it."
The Hoosiers and Badgers are pretty evenly matched. Both teams were 2-3 in the conference, and both teams had only 3 losses. Indiana was 6-3, whereas Wisconsin was 5-3. Even though the teams were pretty even and the game was in Bloomington, experts and fans thought Wisconsin would kill the Hoosiers. Said Chappell of their fans confidence in them, "No one thought we would win. Our fans, the media, and [the Indiana Hoosiers players] consider this win an upset, no matter how small.
The hero today wasn't an offensive player (I think that's the first time all season this has happened for the Hoosiers). The Indiana Hoosiers Player of the Game was Nick Polk. He had a season high in tackles (11) and interceptions (2). Both of his interceptions were key plays in the 4th quarter, as Indiana tried to keep the lead (they were up 24-17 for most of the 4th quarter). "I just seemed to be wherever the ball was," he said. He shrugged when reporters asked him why he hadn't been playing like this all season.
The Hoosiers try and close out their season with at least one win, playing Penn State on the road next week, followed by an in-state battle with the Purdue Boilermakers.

Indiana Lands 2 Recruits
Bloomington, IN - Coach Anthony Thompson is a genius. After hours upon hours spent on calling recruits, 2 more after committed to Indiana.
Anthony Dickerson, a three star Strong Safety from Galesburg, Illinois, is an excellent safety. At 6'0 and 207 pounds, he drop back into coverage and intercept passes and run to the line of scrimmage and stop the halfback. "I consider myself a pretty balanced safety," he said. "I mean, I led my team in tackles, batted passes, and interceptions. That's pretty good." His team hasn't won a game in 12 years, but that doesn't matter.
The other recruit, Matt Davis, is a two star middle linebacker who is amazing in coverage. With 8 interceptions last year, he led the the state of Ohio in interceptions. Willoughby Hills, Ohio has always had a history of great linebackers. He hopes to be the next. "I want people to associate me with the college football greats," he said. "I want to be a Ryan Leaf, a Reggie Bush, or a Brian Bosworth. I will be great."
