I can't take the Passing Yards statistic serious anymore. It's RBI status at this point.
I'm coming off as anti-Brees in this thread so I should probably mention that this is not the case. I've been saying for weeks now that post-Rams game Brees has been playing out of his mind and is definitely giving Rodgers a run for MVP. Although it helps that I've watched every Packer game this year, I have to believe that Rodgers had the better season overall.
Let's look at Rodgers' turnovers for a second. 6 interceptions, 0 fumbles lost. His first interception came in Week 3 against the Bears up 27-17 on a great defensive read by Brian Urlacher. Bears turned it over on downs the following possession. The second and third INTs were very similar: tipped balls that should have been caught by the receivers, both with a secure lead in the 4th quarter. The fourth INT was probably his worst throw of the year, but they were up 28-19 in the 4th against the Bucs and maintained that lead throughout. The fifth was a bad read by Rodgers against NYG that shifted momentum but he made up for it with a 4 TD performance and a 58 second drive down the field to win. The final interception was simply Rodgers trying to pad his stats with a 31-0 lead, passing to Finley in the corner of the end zone when they probably should have just ran the ball. No harm done.
That's it. Rodgers did not make one mistake all season that cost GB the lead or the game. That is remarkable.
Oh and I just realized now, if you factor in rushing touchdowns, Rodgers does in fact have more touchdowns than Brees. (Rodgers with 48 and Brees with 47). None of Rodgers' three rushing scores were 1-yarders, either.
In all honesty I wouldn't mind them sharing the MVP considering that both had two of the greatest quarterback seasons in NFL History. But with the state of the NFL as it is, I can't help but imagine that Brees' season will be looked at in a few years the same way we view someone like Matthew Stafford's 2011 season right now. Rodgers' season will probably be more memorable long-term for going 15-1 and having the highest season QB rating of all-time (a stat that I believe might actually stand for a while, unlike Brees' passing yards record).
