As mentioned earlier, the point of the draft is to help 'cycle team success' to ensure financial profitability for all markets.

If a market is failing that's not good for the league. Not to say Minnesota's is, I haven't a clue, but I can't imagine a team that's at the bottom and staying there is all that good for the bottom line.

When a team attempts to rise from the ashes, but a player's poor choices (getting into his situation in Spain)/lack of commitment (only playing where he wants)/ego allow him to skirt the purposes of the league's routine, so that he can eventually play in a market that's not in as big of a need for this player, that's not good for the league IMO.

So again, why do you guys see this as being 'ok' ?

You basically have to play for FREE for the first 2 or 3 years you're in the league and you're not even guaranteed minutes because right after you THEY PICKED ANOTHER PG. The player made it ABUNDANTLY clear that he was going to be selective about where he signs simply because he will be having to pay out of pocket basically to play in the NBA. He needed a spot where he could get an endorsement deal or enough exposure where he could actually be profitable. He openly told teams this and made no secret of this fact.

How is it his fault when a team that he told before the draft he wouldn't play for them drafts him? Not only that, but the team then drafts another player at his position, making it an even tougher situation for him to want to go into. If they had gotten Curry instead of Flynn, Minnesota would have been able to use that as leverage to say he will be part of a talented, young backcourt. Instead, they shit the bed and picked Flynn.

This is COMPLETELY the fault of Minnesota.

Think of this situation. You are an executive in the corporate field and in this economy, pickings are slim. You have your current job which is nice, but it isn't a blue chip company. You get interview with GE and they have a few openings. With your current job, you would have to pay a severance back to the company and as such, you need a position that would give you enough money to live comfortably and pay the former company back at the same time. GE has a few openings, including at some positions where you could pay back and live just fine. Instead, they offer you only the position where you would be losing money with the severance package. Not only that, but the position they offer is in their highly volatile GE Financial branch where executives have had a very rough time staying with the company.

Even though GE is the big leagues in the corporate field, you would be putting your family at risk simply because you wouldn't be making much money. Plus you are offered a very bad position in the company! Wouldn't you just pass on the GE offer and go back to your old company?

The reason they picked another PG, is because of his lack of commitment to the league/draft. He's a top talent that's dicating to the league what's going to happen, either everyone let him fall to NY or LA, or fuck your league. That's not right.

Again this goes back to the purpose of league draft's and the success of all league markets, which should be top priority to the NBA should it not?

Meanwhile all GMs should have been aware of your situation and your intentions. You can just stay in Spain and play out your contract with your Spanish team and then when you come over you're not playing for free or you could get a trade to another team that is totally committed to you and has endorsement opportunities so you don't end up playing for free.

This sets no precedent for the NBA draft. This is an extremely touchy and unique scenario. This is miles different then someone from college getting picked with ZERO leverage demanding a trade. Rubio has leverage and in this case it even makes sense and you can see where he's coming from.

Simply because he has leverage doesn't mean he should be allowed to use it, or so I don't think so.

You guys can have sympathy for his poor decision making, but I don't see why he should be entitled to what he's trying to do simply because of this.


He's in a situation (entirely his own choosing) where he can't make money in most places in the NBA. So enter the draft some other year and play along through the draft like everybody else.

As in I think he should stay in Spain until he's able to play in the NBA, free of severance payments to his former club.

Due to that circumstance, I think he shouldn't have been allowed into the draft, since only a couple clubs could have taken him without issue.


According to Forbes.com the Knicks/Lakers are the most valuable and profitable of all NBA chises. The Minnesota team, and other top picking teams, have had seasons in the red financially. The NBA should ensure it's draft is doing what's intended, and this Rubio situation is not that IMO.
