Yknow, they wouldn't have to reboot the damned X-Men franchise if they hadn't fucked up the third one so bad. The first was good, the second was borderline great; the third was just a completely different type of movie. Bryan Singer left for that Superman Returns flick and took his writing and editing staff with him. Brett Ratner's not a terrible director or anything, but he's not the type of guy who should be messing-around with the X-Men series.
I mean, the first two had a deeper meaning and feel to them. The last one sort of had that meaning, but lacked the actual feel. It wasn't effectively or efficiently pulled-off.
As far as Superman Returns, that wasn't a bad movie by any stretch, but that Bryan Singer would ditch a franchise that he was almost fully responsible for the legacy of is sort of upsetting, even this far in hindsight.
And while I'm talking about Superman Returns, I really wish Hollywood would stop churning-out sequels twenty years after the fact just to cash-in on name value. I hope no goes to see that inevitably horrid Beverly Hills Cop IV. They're going to skew the series toward family to garner more money. It's tacky.
Edit: Brett Ratner has apparently stated that he wants BHC4 to be rated R. But 80s R isn't the same as 2010 R, so I'm not sure how he's going to accomplish that. They were all moderately tame for R movies, at least in this day and age. Maybe he'll just say fuck a lot. Maybe that'll sell.
