Michael London Analysis

One of the worst debut performances for a head coach in Virginia's history, Michael London, has something to prove in 2011. With an expected offense centered around a sophomore quarterback, and a couple of All-Americans; only good things can be expected as the worst has just gone by in 2010. The University of Virginia football program director has made it known that London has three objectives this year.

The first game of the season is here, Ross Metheny has much to prove, as does his head coach, Michael London. All eyes will be on running back Torrey Mack for the entire season. Mack has had problems with injuries in the past, let's hope the running back can stay healthy this year as we will surely need a leader. There are no true worries defensively, except maybe for the inexperience of Franklin Lundy, freshman cornerback starting alongside Chase Minnifield. Lundy possesses speed and good tackle ability, but it's a bit early to say pregame.

Cavs fire on all cylinders
London's second year off to a great start in dominating victory

After tasting defeat the majority of last year, a win means more than anything.

Kent, OH -- After a 3-9 abysmal season last year, Michael London set forth the will to win among his Cavaliers, and today each of them displayed what is hopefully in store the rest of the season, demolishing Kent State 41-3. Before the game, critics stated that Virginia's schedule would be too tough, and losing to Kent State would not be out of range for an inexperienced head coach, and equally inexperienced quarterback.

Today, inexperience did not matter, and it was the likes of Ross Metheny, Franklin Lundy and Jared Green that produced what Virginia football is all about - winning.

Metheny threw for just over 200 yards with two touchdowns to Green, and an interception late on. The sophomore took over the QB1 spot after senior Mark Verica departed in the offseason for graduation - and some think if Metheny was in the driver's seat last year, the Cavaliers could have won a couple more games.

"It feels good to just get a win, man," said Metheny after the game, "You wait patiently for your turn - and when it comes, you take it by the neck and never let go."

With an All-American in Torrey Mack, the running game was surprisingly not as break through as intended, however mack did score on the Cavs first driver of the game - and 11 play drive, covering 75 yards. The Golden Flashes threatened early through Spencer Keith, who found Sam Kirkland wide open after blown coverage by safety Rodney McLeod, but true freshman cornerback Franklin Lundy made a touchdown saving tackle, hustling and bringing down the big receiver.

"That was a key play for us," states head coach Michael London, "If they score right after us - then that's the momentum in their favor, it could have been a game. Instead, we stopped them from scoring after they missed the chip shot of a field goal."

The name of the game for London was the intent to establish the run, but when Mack was carried off the field with a possibly torn shoulder (later deemed only a pull) in the 3rd quarter, Metheny had to go to work. Much like an inexperienced quarterback, the passing lanes only appeared to be open in the center of the field - which is where Metheny found his favorite target, senior Jared Green.

Green, who played all last year in the slot as well, catched six passes for 95-yards and two touchdowns - proving to his coach that he should be moved up in the depth chart for next week against Florida State.

As expected, the Cavaliers defense was stout. Led by McLeod (pictured), the Cavs held the Golden Flashes on third down, only allowing 4 conversions out of 12. In addition to the lack of conversion, London's men caused 4 turnovers, which included 3 fumbles (two by Kent State running back Dri Archer), and one interception on Keith.

With the second team offense and defense on in the fourth quarter for the Cavs, Ken State looked to score and make the scoreline respectable. However, All-American junior defensive end, Bill Schautz of all people, snatched a pass out of the air and proceeded to race back the other way for a 79-yard scamper into the endzone to cap off a record start for Michael London and the Cavaliers.

The conference opener begins early for the Cavs, as facing up against a surely proven Florida State. The Seminoles had no problem against Air Force last week, winning comfortably 41-20. Florida State's starting quarterback, Elijah Manuel showed some signs of a Heisman calling with a relatively perfect day, throwing for 360-yards, 3 touchdowns, and not interceptions. Willie Haulstead caught 7 catches for 150 of those yards, along with Walt Tye for the same amount of catches for 86-yards; each of them catching a touchdown.

Critics say: The Cavaliers are not going to last with the Seminoles in this one. They may put up a decent effort, but Ross Metheny's honeymoon will be over before half time.

Cavs deliver swift kick to steal victory from bitter rivals Florida State

Exciting game, bitter rivalry, few touchdowns, incredible finish, unlikely heroes.

Tallahassee, FL -- This game was supposed to be a blowout. It was supposed to finish with the Seminoles tomahawk chopping their way off the field - with Ross Metheny and Torrey Mack's head on a blunt stick.

The resulting reality was far from the expected. In fact the delusion became the reality for Michael London and his men, as the Virginia Cavaliers came into Bobby Bowden Field and stole the victory from Florida State; leaving the over exuberant fans grasping at excuses of shock.

"Beat Florida State..." London snickered post game, "Check!"

In the first quarter it looked like the Seminoles defense hosting manners were left out of the meet and greet, as Torrey Mack absorbed hit after hit on the very first drive. Eventually the hits maxed out for Mack, as he was carried off the field within that same drive, listed to be injured for the next week with "extensive rib damage".

In Mack's place stepped senior Dominique Wallace; who frankly did not do a thing except take a few less hits, only racking up 31 yards on 17 carries.

With his running game depleted, and downright potentially hazardous to his active players, Michael London opted to put Ross Metheny's leadership qualities to test.

After Virginia stopped the Seminoles on their first drive, Metheny drove his team up the field for 85 yards, finishing off with a perfect floater over the shoulder of junior, Colter Phillips, for the go ahead score; 7-0 Cavs.

The response from the home side was quick, and All-American quarterback EJ Manuel led his team right back up the other way - tying the game up when he spotted a streaking Bert Reed from 14-yards out.

The next two scores were quick, and almost forgettable because the packed stadium did not see additional points on the board until the last seconds of the game.

Metheny found Colter Phillips again after reading a full on blitz; the sophomore audibled for a streak on his tight end, throwing a bullet into his gut to take the improbable lead.

Unfortuantely, the hand that fed the receiver, also fed the Florida State cornerback Lamarcus Joyner. The All-American corner returned the ball 45 yards, shifting out of a tackle, before racing past everyone and into the endzone.

The third quarter was a blur for most, but not for Florida State's quarterback, the usually reliable EJ Manuel.

Manuel proceeded to throw two back to back interceptions when his team was in the redzone - this is where the Cavaliers grabbed hold of the momentum - and never gave it back.Manuel's last throw of the game was another pick, a pass that should have never been thrown in the first place. With 2 minutes remaining, on the Cavaliers 30-yard line, the Seminoles opted to throw instead of run the ball out. Instead, a botched play action pass saw Manuel pressured to the max.

Instead of diving and taking the sack - the bewildered QB threw a hopefully pass intended for noone, except it found the grateful hands of Virginia's All-American defensive tackle, Nick Jenkins.

With under a minute remaining, Metheny was put to the test again - and the moment of truth came when he found senior Kris Burd streaking down the sidelines, threw up a prayer - bounced off the receiver's hands, then somehow caught again by Burd - placing the Cavaliers in field goal range.

The exact yardage for Robert Randolph was 37 yards. He had missed from 25 yards in the third quarter. Actually "missed" is an understatement, he straight up shanked the kick so bad the stat guys could have called it a pooched punt.

Nonetheless, the stage was set for glory. An upset over a ranked rival, a conference win on the line, the momentum on his shoulders.

It's almost unfortunate to have a week off after the hot start the Cavaliers have displayed, however there are still some issues that need to be sorted by Michael London and company, so this could be a blessing in disguise despite the thirst to get the full pads on.
