Recruiting Update

All positions are being looked at, primarily some hefty targets in two 5-star receivers that Michael London and co. are aggressively recruiting, already offering scholarships and promises to both players. After the big win against Florida State, who can blame London for being this aggressive - everyone knows what the Cavaliers are capable of now.

Mighty Mack leads Cavs to 3-0
Virginia overcome stormy weather to slip by Blue Devils

TV2010102508391700copy.png

Torrey Mack had a career day on the ground, racking up more than 200 yards and a touchdown.

Charlottesville, VA -- Michael London made it official to the Cavaliers faithful that last year's performance is in the past, and this year is the year of promises kept. After upsetting Florida State two weeks ago, London's men came into tonight's match with the goal of staying perfect on the season; and thanks to the incredible play of Torrey "Mighty" Mack, the perfect record remains intact.

"He was an absolute force today," says London about his sophomore running back, " You always expect great things from Torrey - he's just that kind of football player; but today's performance was out of this world."

From the start of the game it was evident that this one was going to turn into a barn burner - however the pouring down rain started in the first quarter, and never shut off - which resulted in a muddy, good ol' fashion defensive battle.

"We had to keep the ball on the ground - there was just no traction on the field today for Ross (Metheny) to get his feet completely set," explains London, "But this is the position we are in, so we had to make due with what we got - and tried our best to stick to the gameplan."

TV2010102508510900copy.png

The visiting Duke Blue Devils did not just let Mack run over them, a strong fight was put up in the form of junior quarterback, Sean Renfree. Renfree threw for 260 yards despite the said weather conditions that was pouring over Scott Stadium. Renfree dropped back and found his favorite receiver in sophomore Tyree Watkins, who caught 9 balls for a cool 150 yards, but no touchdowns to show for his efforts.

Despite giving up the major yardage, the Cavaliers defense held firm thanks to the prominent play of the linebacking core, led by All-American defensive end, Cam Johnson. Johnson notched 6 solo tackles, with 2 sacks on Renfree.

"We just pressured the heck out of him today," says Johnson, "Their line was strong and determined, but we took advantage of some of the conditions, it was pretty easy to slip through some of those pushes you know."

TV2010102508382800copy.png

The name of the game remained to be Torrey Mack's performance, but down 13-10 in the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers back was fatigued and in came backup, sophomore Dominique Wallace. On 3rd down and goal, the small framed Wallace lept over his offensive line and flipped head over feet in the air - before landing just over the goalline for the potentially winning touchdown.

After the score, Duke remained determined, led by the calm presence of Renfree in the pocket, and his short slings to the able hands of Watkins.

"Whenever they threw long on us, we could stop it," says Cavaliers corner, Frank Lundy, "But when they threw underneath - we just had no answer at times - it was a struggle."

However much the struggle containing the pass was for the Cavs - good fortune rose for them when Renfree opted to jump out of his comofrt zone and down the field for a much needed first down through his feet. The play resulted in the quarterback smacking into the ground, before receiving a punishing-fumble producing blow by All-American linebacker, Steve Greer.

The only fumble of the game (and only turnover) turned out to be the dagger for Duke's comeback, and with Torrey Mack, the Cavaliers slashed the game into the final seconds to perserve the victory - and the prominent 3-0 start achieved.

Duke 13, Virginia 17
Duke Passing: Renfree, 16/26, 267 yds, TD (6 sacks)
Duke Rushing: Scott, 17 rush, 99 yds
Duke Receiving: Watkins, 9 rec, 152 yds, TD
---
UVA Passing: Metheny, 10/25, 154 yds
UVA Rushing: Mack, 32 rush, 221 yds, TD
UVA Receiving: Smith, 3 rec, 54 yds

Next : @ Maryland 2-2 (1-2)

Still undefeated in August, it's a hard road from here with a trip to Byrd Stadium in College Park, MD next week to face off against the underrated Maryland Terps. Michael London will hope Torrey Mack can get started early, but more importantly the passing game of Ross Metheny has to improve in the big games. On the other side, Maryland's losing has been at the hands of two highly ranked teams in Clemson and Miami, and the 28-3 victory over a strong Wake Forest side was not ignored by the National media.

Critics say: The Cinderella moment could be over for the Cavs when they visit College Park next weekend. Eve though Torrey Mack has been "mighty", it's hard to think that Ross Metheny will have another breakout game like he did against Florida State two weeks ago. The Terps have the always reliable play of senior Torrey Smith, who leads the team with 3 touchdown catches. The theme of the defense is experience, with all upper classmen, led by the NFL potential product, free safety, Kenny Tate.

Terps spoil Hoos perfection
Fourth quarter penalty plays catalyst, hard loss to take from conference rivals

TV2010102517200600copy.png

It was going to be a tough day for Maryland without star running back, Davin Meggett for two quarters.

College Park, MD -- Some say losing games early is what is needed for some teams who have never tasted defeat - it is apparently supposed to build character. Tonight in Maryland, Virginia head coach Michael London saw character from his players on the field, but it doesn't make the lost of perfection hurt any less deep.

"There has been a murmur here and there of a perfect season - these are among our men, not the media. I think with that kind of mindset in place - we can't lose. We honestly felt like we couldn't lose, and tonight - it still has not hit us yet."

The Terps of Maryland handed London and the Cavs their first loss of the season after a gut wrenching performance in the monsoontonight, 13-10. One touchdown and two field goals by Maryland kicker Nick Ferrara was enough to push them past a usually high scoring Virginia side.

"We scored too late," states London, "You can't do that on the road - you can't play defense the entire time and expect them to make the mistake. They did a great job in containing the players we had on the field."

The reason London chose those words is because he was referring to the lack of offense without the services of Torrey Mack - who had 6 carries for 62 yards - due to the starting running back carted off in the middle of the second quarter due to a "pulled hamstring".

TV2010102521182100copy.png

Taking over for Mack was not an easy task, but Dominique Wallace produced the goods when called upon, rushing for 55 yards on 7 carries. Unfortunately for Wallace, he too felt the force of a highly physical Maryland linebacking core, led by insidebacker, Avery Murray. Murray knocked Walalce out of the game with a concussion after the Terps #45 slammed the back behind the line of scrimmage in the third quarter.

Feeling the depth tighten up, it was up to sophomore Perry Jones to carry the load, and while he was impressive with an average of 5.4 yards (5 rush, 27 yards), Jones was not able to break any big plays loose - which resulted in some one dimensional play by the Hoos by passing the ball via the shaky arm of Ross Metheny.

Metheny, who had already thrown two picks in the first quarter, knew that only down by 6 points, he would have to step up his game. Unfortunately, Metheny struggled to find a rhythm early on in the fourth quarter - hounded well by the Maryland front line and linebackers such as Murray and Ben Pooler.

"They were on us pretty good today," says Metheny, "It was a messy day - a lot of our plays just were a second or two off, and they (Maryland) caused a lot of that."

After managing a field goal to bring the game within 3 points, Virginia looked to complete the comeback after forcing Jamarr Robinson and company to go three and out.

TV2010102521121200copy.png

Under two minutes remaining, the name of the game was pass - and pass some more. The theory did not pan out for Michael London, and on 4th and 10 it was up to his quarterback to find a completion.

Metheny obliged, and a quick slant completion to Kris Burd was enough for a first down and then some after the receiver pushed through some arm tackles. However, instead of rushing back to the line, the Virginia offense stared in disbelief as a flag was thrown by side judge, Charles Pass. Pass threw the flag down before Burd caught the ball indicating an offensive penalty.

Moments Later, the call was confirmed - and Byrd Stadium erupted with relief, the call resulted in a 4th and 20 for Metheny and the Virginia offense to somehow, miraculously convert.

TV2010102521141500copy.png

Byrd Stadium became deafening for the quarterback, and as he slung a side arm throw for his tight end Colter Phillips, the quarterback received a punishing blow to the chin from none other than Avery Murray.

The incredible sequence seemed to slow down like a movie - as Phillips snagged the ball out of the air, while simultaneously being smash tackled in the chest by Maryland corner, Cameron Chism.

The receiver seemed to hold on, but Chism's tackle was fierce and accurate, jarring the ball loose - along with Virginia's hopes of a comeback, and perservation of a perfect start to the season.

Next : Miami OH 1-2 (1-0)

"No excuses" month begins in OCtober, and after a painful loss against rivals Maryland, head coach Michael London has stated he will not let his men sink it in their heads that losing is common for the program. Miami of Ohio have a strong history, receiving bowl invites the last 8 years. However, this year, the start has not been ideal, currently sitting at 1-2 - and losing to unranked Cincinnati (5-0) last week 48-14. On top of that, Miami OH only win was against Ball State (0-5), which was a game barely won in the fourth quarter 28-20.

Critics say: Time to take the frustration out on an innocent team like the Redhawks. Torrey Mack is slated as questionable, but after seeing the likes of Dominique Wallace and Perry Jones last week - London's side could be okay. The key will be to see if Ross Metheny can shake off his poor showing against Maryland, and start delivering the strikes in front of the Hoos faithful.

Virginia underestimate RedHawks
Dysert plays hero and villian role in close lost to Cavs

TV2010103021175800copy.png

Noone had heard of Zac Dysert before the game, after today's sequence of events, it was another story.

Charlottesville, VA -- At the end of the first half, junior quarterback for Miami, Zac Dysert, was a perfect 10 for 10, with one touchdown to show. By the end of the game itself, Dysert had accumulated a total of 385 yards passing, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The last two interceptions proved to be crucial in the heartbreaking loss to the University of Virginia.

After a heartbreaker of their own last weekend to Maryland, Virginia expected to roll past Miami of Ohio with ease - Michael London was even interviewed about the Idaho game happening next weekend. The Cavs pre-game show lineup did not even include an introduction to the visiting RedHawks team members.

"I'm not going to lie, it was poor preparation on my end," says London, "There are no excuses. I took it really easy on the guys this week - felt they needed to see a bit of control from myself after the loss to Maryland. We completely overlooked this Miami team."

The notion was well heard from the RedHawks players, especially Dysert who claimed the PA announcer for Scott Stadium mispronounced his name "Dessert" instead of "Dye-Sert".

"It's the little things like that, that pump you up for a game," Dysert was quoted after the game, "As if I needed anymore fuel to take out a school that just had no respect for us coming in. It was 'go-time'."

TV2010103021300600copy.png

The absence of Torrey Mack last week at Maryland was surely the downfall of Virginia, and before the game London had even scratched the surface of keeping the injury-prone sophomore on the bench to "recover" further. Little did he know how much Mack was needed as soon as the floodgates opened, and by halftime, the Cavs had found themselves on the other side of the scoreboard, losing 19-10 in front of their own fans.

Mack and the Cavs woke up, and the running back finished the game with 126 rushing yards and a touchdown, proving that he is still one of the feared rushers in the ACC this year. If Ross Metheny couldn't get the job done through the air, it was all Mack on the ground, and even when he was stopped at first - he showed some unseen strength, breaking tackles left and right.

"Today was a good day," starts Mack, "Well - at the end of the day it was - but I'd have much rather had put up more yards and demolish this team like we were expected to."

As mentioned before, Dysert was perfect in the first half, however - the minute the second half began - the quarterback seemed a different person - heaving passes left and right, all too powerful, all pointing to the amount of adrenaline the junior had built up.

"He started making some erratic plays that turned out to go our way," says coach London, "We took advantage of what was given to us - after the first half, we would have taken anything."

TV20101030211758aaa00copy.png

Despite scoring two touchdowns in the first half, Dysert had lost his touch in the third quarter - firstly throwing a horrendous pass intended to go out of bounds, but came up short before Virginia freshman Franklin Lundy snagged it out of the air for his first career pick.

The pick set up a Robert Randolph field goal, and the Cavs were within six thanks to two previously missed extra points by RedHawks kicker, Brandon Hawkins.

Eager to get back on the right track, Dysert and the RedHawks threw on their next possession - fearless of the Virginia defense, but appearing too naive to overlook the excellent coverage by senior corner, Chase Minnifield. Minnifield read the eyes of the quarterback on a quick out route, and was first to the ball before taking it back for a pick six - and more importantly, after the extra point, the Cavaliers first lead of the game.

The momentum was with London's men, and Dysert felt the pressure on the next possesion - hit while thrown on third down - this time the ball found its way into the hands of seldom played, senior Dom Joseph. Joseph juggled the ball in his hands - but recovered, racing his way down the field for another pick six.

Even though Dysert made it interesting by throwing a beautiful floater into the hands of Steven Rouse for a score, the onside kick attempt failed - and Metheny knelt down to secure the much needed victory for the Cavs.

"We got away with this one," says coach London, "It was a poor display in the first half - but we showed character, and I can be nothing but proud of my men. I'm really proud, because we could have let another one slip by - but we fought, and grinded out an improbable win."

Next : Idaho 2-3 (1-2)

While Idaho have an rather high ranking in offensive yards, their killer instinct of scoring touchdowns has been somewhat dormant. Quarterback Brian Reader, has just over 690 yards, but only 3 touchdowns to show for his efforts, with 1 pick. Catching those three touchdowns is receiver, Preston Davis, who leads the team with 478 receiving yards so far in his final season as a Vandal.

Critics say: If the glance was on paper, Idaho wouldn't have a chance in hell against Virginia. However, after the Cavs messy win against the RedHawks of Miami Ohio, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Vandals to come out guns blazing. Eitherway, the saving grace of the Cavs is Torrey Mack, and if he's as good as he's been - he will singlehandedly destroy any hopes of a win at Scott Stadium for Reader and company.

Completely at ease
Cavs destroy Vandals at Scott Stadium

TV2010110120240900copy.png

With three touchdowns scored, Torrey Mack dominated on the ground against the visiting Vandals.

Charlottesville, VA -- The Virginia Cavaliers group that sputtered against Miami Ohio last week did not enter the field, instead it was the team from the first week of the season against Kent that showed up - completely demolishing the Idaho Vandals 62-14 today in Charlottesville.

Led by the star qualities of sophomore running back Torrey Mack, Virginia never let off of the gas pedal - even the backup running back Dominique Wallace racked up 71 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Throwing the ball was no different as the Vandals poor covering down the field allowed Ross Metheny to step up, and complete several passes to the likes of Jared Green for two touchdowns - and then Metheny found his fellow backup quarterback/receiver Michael Strauss for a record high 121 yards.

TV2010110119382400copy.png

If looking at the scoreboard, one would see that the Vandals did have the lead in the first quarter - as Princeton MccArthy dove into the endzone - and Virginia could only setttle for two Ryan Randolph field goals from 31 and 34-yards.

"The first quarter, and a bit into the second we were on our heels," says coach Michael London, "But unlike last week, we woke up early in the second quarter - and proceeded to do what we do."

Jared Green became Ross Metheny's touchdown target from 5 yards out, then Mack scooted in from 5 yards as well. The ensuing kick off had Princeton McCarthy fumble, which was scooped up by Aaron Taliaferro - who returned it 44 yards and a score.

Right before the end of the half, a quick blitz shook Idaho quarterback, Brian Reader - and as he felt the pressure from Steve Greer, the ball deflected into the hands of oncoming rusher, defensive end Matt Conrath. It was Conrath's first interception of his career, and being his final year at Virginia - the defensive tackle will surely remember it.

Jared Green will remember his part in the victory as he was found from 6-yards out on the next play from Ross Metheny completing an unanswered four touchdown streak from the home side by halftime.

TV2010110119500800copy.png

The second half of the game was the Cavaliers running out the clock with Torrey Mack, and the Cavs #5 ended up scoring two touchdowns, one which included a 47 yard dazzling run for six points at the end of the third quarter. As mentioned before, backup Dominique Wallace had no trouble against the Idaho defense, and put up 71 yards on only 12 carries, also scoring 2 touchdowns.

At the end of the day, it was a complete job done by Michael London and the Cavaliers.

"This was exactly what we needed before a big game next week in Chapel Hill," says London, "It was great to see the second team offense/defense out there completing the job - makes me feel a lot better after last weekend's performance."

Next : @ North Carolina 4-3 (2-2)

Jumping to 5-1 on the season after destroying Idaho, Virginia look to take on their hated rivals, the UNC Tarheels. UNC has been on a three game losing streak, but against some very tough opponents in #11 Virginia Tech and #4 Clemson - most recently losing a heart breaker to Tennessee 31-28 in Chapel Hill.

Critics say: This is the game to watch, Virginia are feeling great about themselves after two wins since losing their perfect streak, but now the true test begins against an unpredictable Tarheel side that is itching to take out their season frustrations on the high flying Cavaliers led by Torrey Mack. Mack will be used early, and if that's the case - the Tarheels might have to change up their scheme to put the pressure on Ross Metheny, despite the quarterback's solid game against the Vandals.

Heartbreak in Chapel Hill
Tarheels delay Cavs bowl berth, win rivalry game

TV2010110605581800copy.png

Early on it seemed the Cavs would pull away from their hated rivals thanks to two picks by Chase Minnifield in the first half.

Chapel Hill, NC -- Michael London's Cavaliers dropped to 5-2 on the season (2-2 conference) after another heartbreaking loss, this time to the hands of their hated rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels, 31-28.

As strong as the defense looked in the first half, the UNC had an answer for everything by creating good defensive plays of their own. Cavs sophomore quarterback, Ross Metheny, struggled early on, throwing two picks that led to the Tar Heels scoring.

The name of the first half was awareness, and the secondary for the Cavs was led by senior Chase Minnifield. Minnifield, dubbed "Mini", was the best player on defense by grabbing two early picks from UNC quarterback, Bryn Renner. Minnifield caught the QB staring down the field too long, and the experienced senior jumped on chance - snagging the balls before the receivers could.

"We played really strong in the secondary," said Minnifield after the game, "A lot of bump and runs to confuse their passing attack - it worked at first."

TV2010110605244800copy.png

After giving up some big plays in front of their home crowd, the Tar Heels got their act together despite losing starting running back Giovanni Bernard for the game with a torn abductor muscle in the first quarter.

In Bernard's place was sophomore, Kenny Reid. Reid had only rushed for just under 50 yards this season, and when he got his chance, he made it count by taking his first hand off for 30-yards in the second quarter.

The long run, set up a good play-action play by Renner, who found his favorite target in tight end, Christian Wilson. Wilson dove in front of Minnifield, and held firmly to the ball with one hand - before cradling it into his possession for a defiant score at the end of the half, making the score read 14-10 in favor of the visiting Cavaliers.

TV2010110605371800copy.png

Both teams scored a touchdown late in the third quarter after the second half had started in a dog fight for field position. First, Kenny Reid sneaked in from 10-yards out to give UNC the lead, but Virginia's self-proclaimed Heisman candidate, Torrey Mack answered right back with a school breaking 78-yard scamper into the endzone to take the lead right back.

TV2010110605455700copy.png

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Bryn Renner and the Tar Heels. Renner showcased his fine decision making ability by fooling the Cavaliers' defense more than once. On occasion the quarterback would drop back - throw a bullet - on another occasion, the Tar Heels #2 would take the snap and run.

"We were at wits end with him," says defensive coordinator Jim Harding, "They mixed up a lot of the plays from the first half - but tweaked them to fit Renner's options - it was not easy."

The momentum continued with Renner and company, and it was no surprise when he found Christian Wilson yet again - this time from only 3-yards out for the go ahead score. The Tar Heels defense stood strong and denied a first down - requiring Michael London to punt the ball away with 4 minutes remaining, but with two timeouts left.

Unfortunately for the Cavs - UNC found the endzone again, this time Devon Ramsay took advantage of the field position after Ross Metheny had thrown his second pick of the game to a wide open Brian Gupton - who returned the ball almost to the Cavaliers 3-yard line.

TV2010110605545100copy.png

Down 31-21, it was time for the Cavs to throw as much as possible. It didn't help the team that on first down, Ross Metheny was shook up with what looked like a sprained ankle after Gupton had launched himself into the QB on a blitz. Metheny was rushed out of the game, and in stepped the ever impressive, freshman Michael Strauss. Strauss had already been on the stat sheet with 2 receptions for 37 yards, but now it was time to see the arm of the Cavs' dubbed, "T-Squared" (Tim Tebow version 2).

Metheny was quickly forgotten as Strauss proceeded to march the Cavaliers' offense down the field an impressive 45 yards, which was capped off with a beautifully thrown screen pass to Tim Smith - who dove head first into the endzone to make the score a field goal away from tying, 31-28.

The hope and jubilation of the Cavaliers was quickly removed when Jimmy Howell's onside kick met the sure hands of none other than Christian Wilson of the Tar Heels.

Victory confirmed, rivalry won - the Tar Heels just barely edged out the Cavs to win the South's Oldest Rivalry, but more importantly make their own bowl bidding future closer to reality.

Next : Air Force 1-6 (0-5)

Even though heart break is in the air, Michael London can be proud of the way his team looked against a highly underrated UNC side. Coming into town next week are the Falcons of Air Force, a team that Virginia will not take lightly. It has been evident in their recent play that the defense has struggled to cope with speed of the run - and scramble, and that is what Air Force is all about this year. This game will mean a lot more than just another game - if a victory is sealed, it's bowling time for the Cavaliers.

Critics say: Michael London will not take it easy on the Falcons - after all, a bowl bid is at stake again. Despite rumors of Ross Metheny not being available, the Cavs should not have to worry due to the recent emergence of T-squared, or Michael Strauss - a Tim Tebow look a like. The boy can run, catch, pass - everything. If he gets in the game, let's hope, the Cavs will not even have a moments worry.

Good luck getting bowl eligible against Air Force. Tough loss to North Carolina, great game, nice job as always.

Cavs officially bowl eligible
London completes main objective of debut season

TV2010111407111900copy.png

The game plan was simple for Virginia, run Mack - to run the Falcons - into the ground.

Charlottesville, VA -- Michael London did not have to extend his play calling too far today. A win was in the making when Torrey Mack blasted off the opening handoff for 25 yards, after that - as would be the theme - Dominique Wallace capped off the drive to put seven points on the board.

"Today was probably the most content I've been all season," says London, "All touchdowns were running plays - that is good for a head coach, means you got as close as possible to the goal line - just have to step over it now."

It was not all roses for the Cavaliers, the one touchdown the Falcons did score was highly questionable defending/tackling - 3 tackles missed by the All-Americans in the trenches, before allowing Asher Clark break loose for a record breaking 82-yard touchdown run from scrimmage.

"Things did not look good considering they answered so quickly. I was ready for a game, but I'd be lying if I said I just wanted to get out of our own stadium as a bowl eligible team."

TV2010111403262200copy.png

The momentum, while appearing somewhat shifted, was weighted heavily back towards the Cavs side after safety Corey Mosley sniffed out a triple option play by Connr Deitz intended for Clark. Deitz tossed the ball in the direction of Clark, but Mosley got to the ball in the air first - destroying the excahnge for an impressive turnover in favor of the Cavs.

TV2010111403221600copy.png

It seemed that from there on out, even after Metheny throwing an interception in the third quarter, the Falcons wings were clipped. Despite Clark's impressive statistics on the ground - the running game of Virginia led by Torrey Mack overpowered any kind of momentum the Falcons gained by first downs.

In the end, it was a blow out for Virginia, but more importantly the official determination that playing in the post season is now a reality for the debutant, Michael London.

"I think you can start calling me 'Mike' now, I've made it officially into the family - and into the hearts of the Hoos faithful. I want to finish the season strong, and continue to dish out victories."

Next : Bye

What better way to celebrate the a bowl berth, than to spend it hard on the recruiting trail. That is the news coming out of Charlottesville that head coach Mike London will be grinding out the lists for potential Cavaliers next season. After that though, it's back to work to face Georgia Tech at Scott Stadium.

Critics say: A bowl berth is always a great boost, but hopefully London isn't keeping his men in the clouds too long - because Georgia Tech can quickly ruin the mood with their highly potent option style offense. If London spends less time recruiting, and more time on preventing big runs like the Air Force game, he might have a shot at having his Cavaliers go to 7-2 on the season.
