UFC 104: Machida vs Shogun 10/24

Guys gotta get off Machida. He won. You can't blame the guy for being happy. Regardless of how it happened, it's the first successful title defence in quite in the LHW division.

Shogun landed 82-42 overall strikes. Machida landed 24 bodykicks to Shogun's 16. For those saying Machida's were doing more damage, I think the respective stance's of each fighter tells the story. Machida was visibly hurting. Switching stances, no spring, etc. Shogun looked as fresh as I have ever seen him, which is fantastic.

EDIT - As an aside, and we have had this discussion before, I wish judges would learn to use the 10-10. I thought rounds 1/3 were quite close, and to give a winner was very harsh to the other fighter. Make it a 10-10 and make the guys earn the win, instead of just tossing a coin

This is true.

If you ever go to a press conference, you got grade A winners there, present company excluded...no, seriously.

Most reporters ask bad questions because they don't know what they are looking at and don't know terminology...they don't really know the sport very well...even at a rudimentary level. Example...last night a guy asked Randy Shannon about Randy Phillips being burned a lot...to which he wasn't...maybe once or twice...but because the reporter didn't know how a play develop or whose assignment was which, he look stupid when he asks why Randy Phillips was burned over and over. You get the point.

btw - M4L...I don't even do the writing thing fulltime...fulltime pays like garbage and your job security blows dick.

I'm not sure exactly you measure "damage"... But when I see one fighter who is visibly hurting, exhausted, switching stances to reduce further damage, has significantly slowed their movement, has visible red marks from repeated strikes, and is bloodied, whereas the other fighter really has none of those issues... Its not hard to figure out... And in this fight, it wasn't Rua with all of that.

The "10/10" fear is real, and it really leads to some questionable decisions.

We've all seen rounds where we say to ourselves, "I'm glad i'm not a judge,how the hell do you score that?"....well, that's a 10/10. Instead, these guys force a 10/9 one way, based on one strike or a late takedown. That's BS.

I also think they don't utilize the 10/8 enough, either. In order to get a 10/8, you have to nearly murder a dude, all while not finishing him. Too tough a standard. Simply dominating a round should yield a 10/8. What we currently consider a 10/8 (near murder), should be a 10/7. Reward guys for dominating.

People don't want draws (I dont understand why, if its a draw its a draw), but if you give out more 10/8's and the occassional 10/7, it would balance out the 10/10's.

Alot of these judges are former boxing judges, and they get stuck in the boxing mindset. You dont see 10/8, 10/7 in boxing without knockdowns (for the most part), but MMA only has 3-5 rounds, so you need to be more generous with them in order to reward dominant rounds and make sure the correct fighter wins.
 
2 judges scored it as rounds 1-3 for machida and 4-5 for shogun. i think everyone can agree shogun won the last two rounds... but to say shogun didnt win any of those first 3 rounds is just ridiculous

Agreed. The system has to change. It doesn't work as it stands. The problem is that, as you (or someone, anyway) earlier pointed out, its not in the UFC's power to change it.

I think this fight is another prime example as to why they need to shorten the length of the round and fight more rounds. It's just too hard to score a 5 minute period and 5 rounds isn't enough.

As far as matchups go I was thinking about Shogun/Silva when the score cards were being gathered, that would have been another great fight. With that gone I'm hoping for Shogun vs Rampage now and winner gets Machida.
