More rounds, shorter rounds.

That would take away almost all elements of the ground and become a sloppy boxing fest. We already have too much of that as it is.

I dont care what anyone says, 10 point must system for MMA is garbage, judging every round like a boxing match, etc...

Just pick a damn winner, judge the fight as a whole, get 3 judges and tell me who you think won the fight

If you think its a draw, call it a draw, if you think this guy won, just write it down, I dont care about 'stealing a round' with a TD in the last 5 seconds of a round, or whatever

just pick a winner

10 Point system is fine but they need to hold the judges accountable. grade them like you grade the NFL refs. you grade a round out of wack you dont work the next month

If Shogun has cardio he can win this, he has all the tools, if it goes to the 2nd round you can tell the story, if he is gassed in the 2nd he will get TKO'd, if not it will be a long night for Machida

basically cut down any time to work for a sub or solid GnP, more stand ups because quicker rounds

either way you can spend half the round trying to get someone down, than its over in another minute, or on the flip side just take guys down and win the round like nothing, also it will make guys who get taken down just hold and not force them to escape or reverse

sub guys once again are screwed by rule changes

Finally got around to watching it...Shogun got robbed, it was close, but how it ended up unanimous for Machida I will probably never figure out. I was pulling for Machida, wanted him to win, thought he was going to win, but he didn't, he got an early Christmas present (unless we find out this was the "trick" in trick or treat for Shogun). The most damning part was that he fell apart and looked weaker and weaker the longer the fight went on. I had it 48-47 Shogun, but it couldve easily been 49-46.

if i were a judge i would've scored it 48-47 like it was scored, and the reason i have Machida winning was because of his takedown D

he stuffed every takedown that Shogun attempted, granted Shogun still did good in the standup, but i think that they were somewhat even (with the edge to Shogun), but being a wrestler and training MMA myself, i realize how difficult it is to stuff a takedown, but to also stuff numerous ones throughout the fight against someone that is good at takedowns

i think it could have gone either way, but i feel the judges got it right

Agreed. There is no possible way you should win a fight based on takedown defence, or submission defence. The point of fighting is to be aggressive (be be aggressive).

Regardless, according to FightMetric, Shogun only tried 4 takedowns. Stopping all of them is not a fight winning tactic.

Obviously you have something in common with UFC judges who score 1 takedown = a ton of punches to the face. IMO a takedown should only score points if you do something with it. IE the Tibau/Neer fight. I thought Tibau won, but all those takedowns yielded him no solid positiions on the ground. Escaping shouldn't give points to Neer, but I don't think getting a useless takedown here and there should you win a round

in actual wrestling matches you don't get any points for stuffing a takedown, but in MMA they do count a stuffed takedown as better than a strike

Fighter A hits Fighter B in the face with a punch

Fighter A shoots in for a takedown and Fighter B sprawls and stops the takedown

anyway, i think there should without question be Machida/Shogun 2 because there isn't any other Light Heavyweight Championship match i'd rather see right now

cecil peoples explains why he scored the fight for machida

"First of all what you need to understand is that from where the judges are sitting, we get to see things that the fans at home may miss. Mauricio Rua was being aggressive but it wasn't effective aggressiveness which is what we as the judges look for when scoring a fight. The way I saw it, Lyoto was landing the more cleaner and damaging strikes throughout the fight - if you take a look at the judging criteria clean strikes are valued more-so than the quantity of strikes landed. Although Rua threw a lot of low kicks they were not as damaging as Lyotos diverse attack in the earlier rounds which is why I scored the first three rounds for Machida. You have to keep in mind we always the favour the fighter who is trying to finish the fight, and leg kicks certainly don't do that."

"When both fighters are engaged in a striking match what I always look for is the fighter who is being judicious, picking his spots, being accurate and landing the cleaner strikes which ultimately is what Lyoto did more effectively than Rua. Lyoto made Shogun come after him, he determined where the fight took place which in my opinion constitutes as effective Octagon control. I recognize the fact that Rua did have a few takedown attempts during the course of the fight however Lyoto defended them all successfully which counts as effective grappling in his favour, where as ununsuccessful takedown attempts are not scored at all. I'm just glad the other judges on the panel saw it the same way and I'm sure the fans who understand the technicalities of the sport agree with the decision too."

so apparently the 4 stuffed takedowns could very well have won the fight for machida and being "elusive" aka running away, never engaging and making shogun chase you constantly means machida clearly had octagon control. and i dont get how he says they favor the fighter who is trying to finish the fight when neither fighter was ever in any danger of being finished.

Lesson learned for all fighters: Dont worry about hitting your opponent all the time.. just make sure when you do land you, you land clean.. even if its only at a rate of 1/5 of what your opponent is hitting you. You will still win the fight.
