[PS3] Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

As far as the story goes...

 

I finally got to what was left of the castle in France.

Fell into the cave and got stuck in one of those narrow passages that Naughty Dog seems to have fallen in love with (the ones Claustrophobic sufferers dig so much)...

So, some thoughts (take the spoiler tag seriously):

 

Very, very good game with some of the best set pieces ever...but that being said, I definitely can see why certain reviewers (cough Sessler cough) would say that this didn't quite live up to UC2. Here are my issues with it:

1) the stupid water/darts/hallucination shit. When it was a plot point it was okay, but towards the end when they did the Deus Ex Machina shit with Sully it was fucking retarded.

2) I liked the story to a point, and I loved the set ups to instances but seriously, there are a LOT unanswered in this game. A LOT. And they set it up like they WILL answer it but they don't. That kind of annoys me.

3) More on the story...I really feel like they stole frame for frame shit from The Last Crusade.

4) The combat is still a little fucked. There is very little indication as to what you need to do in some situations, yet you get killed despite the game never telling you what you need to do.

So yeah, that all sounds bad, but I did really enjoy the game. I just, I don't know....I think in the long run it was lacking something. It didn't seem to grow as much as I'd hoped it would from 2-3.

I don't mind the enclosed spaces per-say because the game's simple enough to complete.

Kill an army of thugs, murder some mutant... thing that may or may not be human, save the girl(s) and profit.

That and solve inane puzzles (the 2nd Chateau puzzle took a minute) that pad game time if need be.

If you really want a UC/Sandbox hybrid, DL the Saints Row the Third, "Initiation Station" demo they have out now.

You can model your character after Nathan Drake and have him go apeshit in Steelport. :runaway:

Man this blows I tried playing online but I need a code god damn it's useless to rent games now with all this code BS.

It is pointless if you intend on playing any multiplayer these days. The only thing renting is good for is if you just want to play through the single player portion of a game.

Speaking of MP, I played some of the Co-op Survival mode with two randoms the other day. It's basically Horde mode from Gears with a twist. The objective changes with each wave. One wave will just have simply surviving loads of enemies, another wave will have you killing enemies but only from inside a designated area (Kind of like a King of the Hill) and the other variation is having to grab an idol and get it to a treasure chest, usually on the complete opposite side of the map. It's a lot of fun and takes coordination between players.

I also played the co-op story mode with Jay and my cousin Montto last night. That shit is a blast too although if there are really only five scenarios I'll be disappointed. It will probably only take a maybe three hours to play through those. Sure I will probably end up playing through them multiple times but still. And I know they are planning DLC co-op missions but a few more scenarios on the disc would've been a lot better. And yes, JayDizzle is God's gift to Uncharted. He is the greatest player that will ever grace your online connection.

In terms of dying and not knowing what to do, I am referring to the Cruise ship machine gun dude, the flooding cruise ship, and the storm in the desert personally. There was very little direction in those and guys coming from behind you and in front of you and it made for some pretty shitty situations.

Overall though, I meant fucked in the sense that it is just WAY over done to the point of hurting the story. They go all in with the set pieces to the point where they barely feel like a game, and then they throw in these really long, gamey segments where they throw about 1,000 infinitely spawning dudes in suits at you.

Story wise it left a lot unexplained that it hinted at, and I felt like it was a little silly to go in that direction if you're not going to explain it. Who is Charlie Cutter? What happened between Nate and Elena (further, is it going to become a regular thing that we randomly reintroduce Elena mid-game now?)? What is Nate's real name? It's admittedly little stuff, but in the end it tarnished my overall enjoyment that I finished the game wanting to know what happened to these characters.

The tainted water stuff was just lame, in my opinion. Silly explanation, silly usage.

Again, I really enjoyed the game, I can just see why some outlets weren't bursting with the chance to call it a shoe-in for the game of the year. It is not flawless by any means.

I'm sorry, but if this were any other game that would not be considered a good thing. Or even an okay thing. It's pretty unacceptable story wise. Especially if they never make another UC again. Or, even worse, if they make another UC and STILL refuse to actually flesh out these characters and their relationships with each other.

To each his own I guess. I like having some backstory to look forward to uncovering in a future game. And with the popularity of this IP, I don't see how they wont make at least one more.

The problem I have isn't that more backstory will be fleshed out in future iterations. My problem is that they introduce side stories in this game and just refuse to answer them. Sully's relationship with Nate is finally 100% explained in this one, and it is cool because never in 1 or 2 is the game purposefully baiting the player into thinking "what's the story with those two?" Same even with Chloe, really. I'll be fine when their relationship is explained because there is enough there from UC2 to understand it.

 

Cutter they pull out of the clear blue sky and constantly have you wondering where he came from and why he was there. Why would he risk his life to trick Marlowe? Elena and Nate, it's clear that something went wrong but they keep alluding to the fact that she has the ring on still but they don't ever say what the point of that is (until the end which was basically the same as UC2 -- look, they're together now! Until UC4 where they're broken up again). And why throw in that Nate's last name isn't Drake just to turn around and never address it? What was the point?
