To be serious: They did offer him a 3 yr, 24 million dollar deal. If he had signed on the dotted line then they wouldn't even be considering Peyton. If Smith can get a deal close to what he wants out of Miami, he should do it. SF is doing what they feel is in the best interest of the organization in pursuing Manning. Smith should do what's in his own best interest. If the deal isn't what Smith wants, it might be a bad idea to take it out of spite.

Those numbers? Why those would happen to be their defensive rankings from last year. Seven teams ranked 94th or lower.

So, tonight, when you're feeling vomet-ous with the Kaepernick love from the talking heads, remember - this dude puts numbers up against scrubs, and you won't have to worry about him playing on Sundays.

I don't see how anybody could get upset over a team going after possibly the best player at that position in the league, even one of the greatest historically, and be offended by that.

Yeah sure maybe you'd be like well shit, what if they get it, and send out feelers to other teams, but I wouldn't seriously negotiate with other teams unless it happened, but maybe he knows something we don't and SF is further along in the Manning talks.

It isn't in the nature of a professional athlete to be cool with losing their job. An athlete isn't going to say,"well Manning is the GOAT, so I'm cool with losing my job." it doesn't work like that. Smith should do what is in the best interest of him, just as Manning is about to do.

I would agree if Smith didn't choose not to sign a contract he was pleased with.

I think he's being greedy at this point in his career. They remained patient with him and gave him a long time to finally succeed. He has a coach who backs him, a team that backs him and has already got paid quite well as a former #1.

This wouldn't be happening if he signed and 8M per season is very good for what he's done in his career.

Yeah, that's the important thing to remember here is that Alex Smith was indeed offered a contract by the 49ers, but he didn't like it. So we started pursuing Manning.

At this point, I have to believe that we're the front-runner for Manning's services, so I wish Smith the best of luck wherever he signs (Cleveland, Miami, Seattle, etc.)

There are reports that he's mad at his agent and is considering firing him because his agent is also Manning's. I don't think he's visiting teams as a ploy to drive his price up, I think he's dead up serious. I think he's fed up with the niners after this (even if that is a little silly, he's lucky he's still a starter after how his career began) and is seriously looking for a new team.

Like rawlaw mentioned before, because its Peyton Manning you dont become ok with losing your job. Alex is 27, he cant afford to sit behind Manning for 3-4 years hoping to pick something up. Yea,he had the opportunity to sign a 3 year deal and be done with it but circumstances have changed so he has to weigh his options and do whats in the best interest of him and his family.
