When will the Patriots realize that they need to draft a WR?

Well you figure the Patriots win East and get a bye, Ravens win the North, Steelers get the wildcard, steelers beat whoever they play.. depending on the seeding, the Patriots first game of the playoffs could be the Steelers...

I just think what you're saying, and taking ONE game sample on top of it... doesn't make any sense... Pats small WRs have defeated the Steelers before, including multiple deep balls thrown to Welker and Branch previously... to say they NEED something to beat the Steelers is dumb

I've always disagreed that the winner of the Super Bowl is the best team that season, I simply think it's moronic.

For me to say the 2001 Patriots were a better team than the 2001 Rams is just down right tomfoolery. We won the Super Bowl, we were better during thsoe 4 hours, but for that season they were the better team no doubt, well, the best team IMO.

I can understand that, and the 2007 Patriots offense is the greatest offense the NFL has ever seen... but they're not the greatest team ever because they didn't win the title.

The better team wins the Super Bowl... it's not a fluke, with all the preparation and everything, it's a culmination of a season and if you can't put the cherry on top you don't have a sundae, you just got ice cream in a bowl.

Just so happens, that the Steelers have been the best team in the AFC over the last 5 years, not the Patriots.

So yeah, I'd say it's pretty safe to say that the Patriots need to get better and build a team in order to beat the Steelers.

They need someone in the middle of the defence if I recall that game correctly. They got chewed up over the middle in the air.

Otherwise, they won the turnover/sack/penalty battle but Pittsburgh controlled the clock by chewing up 1st downs.

A different gameplan with the same roster can defeat this Steeler team IMO.

RB - 2011 easily
WR - Gotta go with 2007 because of what Moss did, but they aren't different out side of that
TE - 2011 easily
OL - 3/5 same starters with Waters replacing Neal and Solder repacing Kaczur. I guess 2007 gets a slight edge due to those 3 guys being younger? Meh, it's pretty close. The 2007 OL got beat around by some good DL's that year, Brady's quick delivery covered that up for the most part.

OL I give to the 2007 team. I'm not as high on this 2011 unit as you are(relative to the 2007 team) so my margin of 2007 to 2011 would be a bit more here.

Plus we haven't even gotten to the defense yet. While I think the 2007 Pats defense wasn't nearly as good as some of the rankings showed I stll like them over this 2011 unit by a wide margin.

But I see your point and I'm not really disagreeing with anything that you're saying in the bigger picture.

It's not really that odd, going by the ANY GIVEN SUNDAY argument for me to want a more solid team. Would I be taking a hit at certain positions regarding talent? Yes, but the depth of this Patriots team is similiar to those that WON it all.

And what's the point of playing a Super Bowl? Fuck why do we even play the games if the outcome doesn't determine whose better?

Every team should just sign players, we'll all talk about which teams better and simulate the games in our imaginations.

Overall I think that Tailback U is beating around as well is that it's easier to transform or influence a team from a position like WR as opposed to having to rebuild a defense or put an Ol together. If Tailback is more worried about New England in the short term a WR (or RB IMO) is a "quicker fix" so to speak and would pay more immediete dividends in the Super Bowl hunt. Obviously I'd put OLand Defense above the "need' for a WR or perhaps RB but those are mor elong term progressive fixes

I've always believed any team needs to have at least two receiving threats that are mismatches in single coverage. Doesn't matter where these guys line up, but they have to be able to consistently win a one-on-one to stress the defense.

The Patriots have three in Welker, Hernandez, and Gronkowski. I haven't seen a lot of their games, but it seems like they've come up with ways to get all three involved, or at the very least keep two on the field at all times. That is usually enough to have some offensive production, which they're certainly having.

As for the case with the Jets and Steelers, well, they've got some pretty good defenders, too. It's not like the Pats can't beat either team (they've actually dominated both in recent history), they just got caught on a bad game.

I like what they're doing with two TEs. It's very difficult to defend against, especially with a guy like Brady calling the shots.
