It has nothing to do with Hester's ability or lack of...it has everything to do with Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith being brain dead.

If a player is as elusive and explosive as Hester is, it's almost a waste to use him strictly as a kick returner. It's the same reason Dante Hall was given more rub as a WR with KC.

With that said, the fact that there is not enough inherent value in being a kick returner should tell you all you need to know about the hall of fame credentials of such a specialized position.

Hester is a fun, dynamic, explosive player. He's not a hall of fame player. At least not yet.

The Chicago Bears wanted to make Devin Hester their #1 WR. Think about that for a second. They didn't want to go the KC/Dante Hall route and make him a slot WR. They wanted to and for a short time in 2009 made Devin Hester their #1 WR.

They paid him $40 million to do so/turn into that after a 20 catch season.

It's not that they simply tried to "make him a WR". It's that they actually wanted to him to become a #1 or #2 WR in the NFL and were willing to sacrifice and (try) to find a balance between the two.

That's idiotic. Make Hester a 3rd down RB, or a #3 or #4 WR, a combo of the both and keep him returning full time. I'm fine with them wanting to get Hester more touches but wanting to make Hester your top WR at teh expense of his return abilities?

They try to get him to play WR as well because they are fucking cheap. If they can get a less than mediocre WR out of him rather than paying for a whole nother player on the roster, they will gladly do that.

Hester has two strikes against him, IMO. One, his career isn't over, and he needs 5-6 years more of elite return production to be seriously considered for the HOF. Two, no return man has either made the HOF or been an elite returner for 10-12 years, so we don't know how to critique Hester's career.
