I just wanted to point out that Canada's hockey gold in Salt Lake was their first gold in 50 years...and US basketball's bronze in 2004 was their fourth non-gold medal in 74 years...

Anyone listen to the interview with the NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's of looking into not allowing NHL players to play in the Olympics because of the disruption it has on the NHL season, and something about how he's going to have to talk to the IOC to find out what's going to benefit the NHL with the Olympics?

IMHO, he would be a fool to not allow NHL players to play. I would be curious to see what kind of marketing spinoff the NHL gets after the Olympics. The US and Russia game was a high level competitive intense game I thought and if the NHL can draw me in like that I will follow it more.

Bettman doesn't see the Olympics as a good marketing tool. Sure the Canada vs USA game was shown on National TV here in Canada, but from what I was told, in the USA, NBC had figure skating on rather then Hockey because it "sold better". So the market that needs to be more exposed to hockey had to have a special channel (I believe MSNBC, not sure what regular channels you get) to watch the game.

All he is going to do is make players like Ovehckin sit out for the year of the Olympics. He has already said he will do so and Bettmen can basically go fuck himself on telling him if he can play for his country or not. If this goes through, basically it will be the KHL supporting Olympic teams.

That US-Canada game last night was one of the best hockey games I've seen in the last few years.

Forsberg, Lidstrom, & Alfredsson aren't exactly in the prime of their careers. The Swedes don't have nearly the depth of the Canadian team.


I thought Canada played well against the US, they just were somewhat unlucky that more of their shots didn't go in, and Brodeur had two aggressively bad misplays that led to two US goals. Brodeur looked somewhat shaky. For large portions of the game, the US was caught in Team Canada's jetwash. I thought the Canadians skated circles around the US.

And Sweden I dunno but they are pretty strong. The sedins have been way to quiet through the first part of the tourney and Alfy is still a crazy strong player.

I honestly was hoping the Fins were going to put up a better fight last night.

Bettman's the main reason I don't watch hockey, if he went through with this, it be over. What a cunt.

Like he could have such a conversation with the IOC anyway, they'd snub him in a matter of seconds, the only person who can somewhat top them is Sepp Blatter.

The question isn't "does Sweden suck", it is "on paper, is Sweden as good as Canada".

I say that aren't, because they are relying on major contributions from Forsberg, Lidstrom, & Alfredsson...none of whom are in their prime. Canada has better depth and guys like Heatley, Crosby, Thornton, Toews, Nash, etc. are at the peak of their abilities.

Sweden is NOT as good as Canada on paper. I'd like to hear why you think they are.

Looking at the hockey bracket, it appears that the Czechs did themselves a favor by losing to Russia. They don't have a bye (they have to play Latvia), but they can avoid Canada, Russia, and Sweden until the Final.

no link but read somewhere 8.22 million watched in the us MSNBC second higest viewer total second only to election night 2008, 10.6 million canadians watched it.

depth or not the canadians can not be happy having to go through russia and most likely sweeden to play for the gold. while forsberg is a shadow of his former self lidstrom is still solid and arguably the smartest defensemen in all of hockey. zetterberg and lidstrom were able to control crosby in the stanley cup finals last year without datsyuk which since he is russian they will have to do it again, while crosby is without malkin. which is all just for shits and giggles as they have to get past russia first.
