Canada breathes easier - until tomorrow.

I am going to be a nervous wreck during tomorrow's game

canada could be looking at as many as 6 medals tomorrow

-Men's X-Country Relay (decent shot for a bronze)
-Women's bobsleigh (1st and 4th heading into the last two runs, 4th is just 0.02 out of 3rd)
-Women's 5000m Long Track (Groves is a threat for any medal, Hughes is also top 8 in the event)
-Women's 3000m Short Track Relay Finals (just don't finish last)



plus the canada vs russia game and some favorites on the short track for qualifying for Saturday's medal events.

Thursday is also a potential big day, Women's hockey is Gold or Silver and 3 guys in the Aerials finals as well as women's figure skating.


Definitely could finish these games on an absolute tear if these athletes do what they came to do.

Latvia and Czech Republic in OT...been a damn good game so far.

Looking at the hockey bracket, it appears that the Czechs did themselves a favor by losing to Russia. They don't have a bye (they have to play Latvia), but they can avoid Canada, Russia, and Sweden until the Final.

Latvia almost said otherwise.

You realize who your coach is, right? Mike Babcock...and the Canadians are playing exactly like the Red Wings. Tons of shots on goal, just to throw them on goal. Not necessarily good shots. Also - tons of hits, and puck control.

With that said...everyone claims Canada outplayed the US with that exact gameplan. With that in mind, would you say the Red Wings are still the best team in the NHL? Because the numbers Canada put up against the US in that loss are pretty much the exact same numbers that Detroit puts up every game, and they still manage to lose.

Serious question. Can't have it one way plus the other.

Its strange, because even the wording Kleshreen used in his (vapid) posting implies that he didn't actually see the game. He noticed that Mike Babcock is the Canadian coach, he compared Canada to the Detroit Red Wings, and then he concluded that the Red Wings must suck in real life, so the Canadians must suck too.

Yeah it's because the Canadian team is using the high shooting frequency offence used by most of the NHL juggernauts. Despite Pittsburgh/Detriot/San Jose using it in the NHL (Our last 2 Eastern/Western/Presidents Trophy/Stanley Cup winners) it apparently is our downfall because Detriot isn't doing well this year (despite a long injury list with key players, aging veterans and change in goalie)

He's also comparing 2/3's of Detriots NHL season to just one game in the Olympics, with claims Detriot does what we saw (Canada outshooting the USA 45-25 or some shit?) every night.

2:1 isn't exactly the same as 1.1:1, is it?

Getting outshot by double isn't a frequent thing in the NHL, but apparently Detriot does it night in and night out. I guess those 30.4 shots per game the Wings give up is a statistical inaccuracy? Or them outshooting their opponents in only 57% of their games?

I can only imagine if the Red Wings were outshooting their opponents by a 3-to-1 ratio...they would probably be winless right now.

Jagr might be done for the tournament and this certainly doesn't help their chances vs Finland tonight.

Actually, I watched the whole game. And, it looked exactly like every Wings game over the last four seasons.

Thanks for taking what I say and turning it into what you want though.

I simply made the observation that the team played as nearly a carbon-copy of Babcock's teams, but yet Canada already gets a pass of dominating the game, but just not getting the bounces, while Babcock's NHL team would probably never get that label placed on them.

Look forward to seeing what this statement gets turned into that I didn't imply.

Its even worse if you actually watched the game (I'm still skeptical) and concluded that the Canadians mindlessly tossed the puck 45 times at the US net while the Americans dictated their style of play and outperformed the Canadian team.

What I saw was the US defense constantly scrambling to catch up with the Canadians, the Canadians maintaining possession of the puck for long stretches of the game, the US defense being unable to clear the zone on many occasions, a great game in goal by Miller, and two atrocious mishandlings of the puck by Brodeur.

What did you see, specifically?

Babcock's team had that label for the past two seasons, however injuries (which you continue to ignore in your ramblings) have contributed to his team NOT PUTTING UP THE SAME DOMINATION SEEN IN PREVIOUS SEASONS, OR SEEN BY BABCOCKS CANADIAN TEAM.

The Detriot Red Wings of this season DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT dominate in the fashion shown by the Canadians so far in this tournament in regards to how they are playing the game.

You already admitted to being a homer and this is your downfall in the argument. The Red Wings are NOT playing that well this year and the statistics as I already explained prove this. Your shots for and against are nearly equal and you only outshoot your opponents just over half the time.

I've watched every Wings game...US/Canada game was a carbon copy of almost every Wings game. Plain and simple. Maybe the issue here is that you fools should watch some hockey games outside of your own team.

I am still failing to see the connection between you being a Wings fan and you have a cogent analysis of the USA-Canada game. It would be like someone disagreeing with me about Tim Tebow in the football forum, and my response being "I'm a Steelers fan, so I know what I am talking about".

I know the Wings are terrible this year and have not dominated anyone...but their games this year have looked the exact same as the US/Canada game.

When you say "have looked the exact same", do you mean both games featured two opposing teams playing hockey?

The whole Babcock style thing.

Lets see the wings have made it to the cup final two years in a row. This year they still somehow are in a playoff hunt despite more then half the team being out for the season. Also add on a goalie problem this year with Howard starting to emerge as the starter.

Now your telling me a system that worked for two straight years and even is still working this year with a team full of callups is the reason why Canada failed against the US...

Wake the fuck up you idiot. Hell I have Babock in the running for coach of the year for this season with the wings.

And? I get it. I get all of it. No problem.

The point is that it is Babcock's system. Everyone is saying Canada dominated the entire game because of shots on goal, time on attack, hits, the amount of puck possession they had, etc...Babcock's system. It's not "dominating the game" when the same things are true of terrible teams who lose all the time (i.e., the Wings this year), because it is expected of that system.

Meanwhile, nobody gives credit (I can only assume because it is the US who won, and not some other country) to the US for dominating via their "system"...blocked shots, interceptions, not allowing too many open shots. They dominated just as much in the "system" they were executing as Canada did in their "system."

Ergo - it is ridiculous to say Canada dominated the entire game, when both teams just simply executed each of their gameplans correctly, one with probably a little more luck than the other.

So, in sum, Babcock's/Canada's system is to dominate the game. The US system is to lie down on the ice and block shots. Both teams ran their systems, but the US won because as we all know lying on the ice to block shots always trumps dominating the game when it comes to "system play".

Again, I don't know which game you were watching, but the US had about zero interceptions and allowed quite a few open shots. Their 'lying down to block shots' was more out of desperation than design. You make it seem as if the US defense had the Canadians completely befuddled...that couldn't be further from the truth.
