The South Park crew is no strangers to video games, as they've seen a variety of different genres ranging from first-person shooters to tower defense. Now the crew is adding a new genre to the mix, the 2D side-scroller. South Park: Tenorman's Revenge is the latest South Park game slotted to come to Xbox LIVE Arcade, bringing old-school platforming and four-player co-op to the idyllic mountain town.
Fans of the show will remember Scott Tenorman as a bully who made the mistake of rubbing Cartman the wrong way. Cartman gave Tenorman his comeuppance and then some, forcing him to not only eat his murdered parents, but also cry in front of his favorite band, Radiohead (I guess you'd have to watch it for yourself). Well, Tenorman is back and ready to get his revenge against not only Cartman, but the rest of the gang by creating an army of robot gingers and creating some serious damage through time. The South Park boys enlist the help of Dr. Mephisto to help them repair the time stream and defeat Tenorman once and for all.
The team at Other Ocean Interactive is working very closely with South Park Digital to ensure that the game's storyline and atmosphere fit in with the vibe of the show. Characters are all accurately voiced, and the game is filled with great in-jokes to episodes from the show.
The gameplay is a pretty simple side-scrolling affair. You can play cooperatively with three other friends, with each one taking control of a member of the four South Park main characters. Each one has their own special ability to add to some extra environmental puzzles, like Cartman's belly-bust move that lets him break through solid walls in order to pick up some extra time pieces to help restore time and save the town of South Part. Additionally, each kid will be able to transform into their super hero alter-ego, including the Coon, the Human Kite, and Mysterion.
The game's environments will span 20 distinct levels, each one pulled from the show's history. You'll find yourself visiting locations like Hell, Peru, Tynacorp, and other well-known areas from South Park episodes. You'll also fight against various enemies from the TV show, including ManBearBig, Dr. Mephisto's multi-assed creations, and Christmas Critters as well as the titular villain, Scott Tenorman.
While the pretty gameplay isn't anything to be too excited about, Tenorman's Revenge should be able to maintain the humor and vibe of the popular TV show. There are plenty of in-jokes for fans, and the cooperative experience plays pretty well. We'll get know more about how South Park: Tenorman's Revenge fares when it launches later this spring.
