It should stay. The interview process can be a "joke" to some teams who've already decided on keep interims or bringing in guys from a coaching tree ((i.e Homgren-Morningwet)).
But for the most part it gives assistants exposure they never got before.

Anyone who believes Rooney rule (or affirmitive action) is racist is a moron. The amount of short sightedness in that statement is mind boggling. What imaginary world do you live in where the only people that get accepted to colleges and jobs are "the most qualified" ??

Its preference..your buddies...your coaching lineage..and your color. Thats the way the NFL operated for decades.

The old white guard of the NFL shunned black QBs and black coaches. NFL has done a superb job of basically twisting the stick that was up the ass of old NFL guard and forcing them into modern times. The success of black coaches has been a catalyst to the mindset changing but without the Rooney rule opportunities would still be few.IIRC half the NFL is still owned by the old guard or its descendants.No question in my mind the NFL would not have the amount of black head coaches and assistants if not for the Rooney rule. The 80s' and 90s were littered with black assistants/coordinators who led highly successful units and had to watch as there underlings and barely equals got promoted or hired as Head Coaches.

Oh boo hoo Jerry has to fly in some putz on private plane for a 1 hour interview. Much better than having a handful of worthy candidates never got a shot at another gig and never have there reputations built because theyre black.

As MrBill said one day it should not be needed. But it isnt that day yet. Both RR and AA combat still existing prejudice and pigeon holing and Im all for it.

To be fair though, Caldwell was hired because he's buddies with Dungy. Definitely not based on his resume or past accomplishments and not because of the RR. You give the RR credit for the increase in black QBs then talk about people getting in on connections rather than qualifications...but one of these black coaches is a good example of someone being hired off of connections.

sidenote: when caldwell was an assistant for Indy he had interviews with a few teams but withdrew because he was tired of being the guy teams brought in because of the RR. Shortly after that he was named coach in waiting for Indy.

There's no doubt some of these old NFL owners are racist as hell, but at the same time I don't thinking forcing teams to interview minorities is the solution. It just leads to weird situations like ones that have already been mentioned in the thread.

Also I don't have any stats to back this up but I think the # of black QBs in the NFL has increased w/o any sort of rule.

I was against the Rooney Rule from the start. It's blatant racism in and of itself.

It also encourages teams to interview people who otherwise wouldn't get an interview. This, contrary to popular belief, is not a good thing. I'm almost certain Singletary was named interim because by doing so, the team essentially bypassed the Rooney rule (by calling the interimship an extended interview) and would be allowed to hire Martz as the head coach... unfortunately, the team starting winning, and the fans like Singletary, so the Yorks were kind of forced to go with him... far from being ready.

So it works the same way as California's race-based quotas in public universities. The kid from a shitty high school in Compton is not prepared to handle classes at Stanford, but gets the spot because he's black. He fails out. If he'd gone to some community college in Los Angeles, he'd have gotten a degree... and while it wouldn't have been as impressive a degree as the one at Stanford, he's a hell of a lot better of than if he'd failed.

Affirmative Action drove up black admission rates at major universities, didn't effect overall black admission rates at all, and drove up black dropout and failure rates in California. When they repealed it, all of these went back to normal.

Anytime you create rules that give a race advantages, you will invoke the law of unintended consequences.

All that said, there have been positive changes due to the Rooney Rule. However, those changes have taken root. It's time to get rid of it.

actually, the rooney is not racism at all. nowhere in the rule does it say you have to hire a minority (this is not just for black coaches btw as most people assume, this includes everyone not a full on cracker ass cracka) but that you merely have to interview one. this process is not meant to make teams hire them, but to maybe consider coaches outside of the usual pool they normally go to when thinking of head coaches. there is no way an owner of a mulit-million dollar team is gonna hire anyone he doesnt think is quailified, period. unless you are al davis of course.

affirmative action on the other hand is racism at its best. that law (not a rule, a fucking law) stated that you had to hire a certain amount of minority employees, saying nothing about their qualifications. if a black man is not as qualified or as educated or experienced as his white counter part he will get the job anyways. the real fix to that issue would have been to help the minority get an opportunity for an education to be more quailified than the white dude. i am not saying let the kid from compton into standford if he is not prepared by any means, but just providing teh chance is what america is all about. when you mandate the number of a certian group of people that must be at your school you not only insult the system but you degrade the school's integrity in the process.

the rooney is good for football, leave it alone.

I'm for it. It's been said by someone here that Tomlin got his job because of the Rooney rule. And it's not like they have to hire a minority coach, they just have to interview one.

Tomlin's hiring actually wasn't a product of the Rooney Rule, as the team had already interviewed Ron Rivera.

"Mike Tomlin was not a part of the Rooney Rule," said Rooney, who chaired the NFL committee that instituted the rule in 2003. "We had already interviewed Ron Rivera. That fulfilled the obligation. But we heard about Mike and we called him in and we talked to him. He was very impressive. So we brought him back. I talked to him on the phone often. He just showed that he was going to be a terrific coach, which is coming to bear."

I agree with KOF and steeljake....I think the rule has its issues because some team's make a mockery of the rule, but all-in-all I think the rule at the minimum helps in bringing to light that minority candidates can be viable candidates for NFL jobs. Breaking down the good ole' boy network is a good thing in all facets of business and hiring practices. The good thing about the NFL (unlike college football) is that for the most part the only color that teams see is the green they make from winning. So, eventually the rule may go away, but IMO it has worked.

If a coach is out there white black chinese, then they need to make some noise with their jobs to get noticed. If your the DEF coordinator have the leagues best defense so when a vacancy opens up the GM and owner recognize you for what did, not just because of your color.

Hire the right person for the jobs, and if you're whole staff turns out to being white males (which it will be cause we're fucking awesome) then get better at whatever the fuck it is you do.

That's actually a good point. IMO the intention of the RR was to get minorities who are qualified to be NFL head coaches; however, many teams (owned and operated by white people ) have made a mockery of the spirit of the rule by simply interviewing any minority that is on staff or flying in the "token" minority for an interview after they've already decided on a candidate.

Right, Then the RR should apply if you feel that a coach doesnt have the ability to run your team. I wouldnt hire Bengals coach or Singletary now if you paid their salaries. I think the Cowboys and Minnesota are going to kick themselves taking Garret and Frazier. Do they deserve a shot? Sure but id be waiting for other candidates out there

In my opinion, Rivera is the only guy out there that is a minority worth looking at. But Im sure some will disagree.

Oh and if some black people actually worked and had money maybe they could own a team some day and fire and hire who they want
