The clock will be set to 5:00, team A kicks to team B, the two teams then exchange punts or scores or do whatever else for the next 5 minutes, then the buzzer sounds, the clock is set back to 5:00, and we line back up for another kickoff, where team B kicks to team A. Whoever is winning at the end of the 10 minute OT period is the winner. If it's tied, we do another 10 minutes with sudden death.

Takes just as long, but preserves the actual rules. Both teams get a fair shot with at least one guaranteed possession, and both teams continue to play real football.

The party I was at had a couple hockey fans who were trying to be hockey :smug: and they brought up how hockey doesn't have a lame OT system. I just laughed at them and had to point out hockey gets it right for about 5 minutes then it's the equivalent of a basketball free throw shooting contest.

I can give hockey and soccer a break, because such a high percentage of games end in a tie. So if you want to eliminate ties, they kinda have no choice. It sucks, especially in a Stanley Cup final or World Cup situation, but what can you do?

But in football, the likelihood of a tie is so rare, that there is no reason to contrive a gimmick ending to ensure a result. The NFL has ties, and you maybe get one or two per decade.

For me, the OT killed the ending of the LSU/Bama game, and from a dramatic perspective hurt the drama. I would have rather seen one of the teams earn a real score to win the game.

I will never understand why people defend college OT. Are you in favor of a three point shoot out for basketball OT? How about when baseball goes extra innings, we load up the bases at the start of every inning?

Despite you not being in favor of this - and I do see your point - I think this is an amazing idea.

I'd prefer anything that results in real football being played, and especially anything that promises a possession for both sides.

Personally, I would just prefer CFB & NFL play a 15 minute 5th Q, with the game being over once both teams have completed a possession and someone is winning.

Nope. I watch the NFL every Sunday but I'd much rather watch to unranked teams go at it in NCAA football than 95% of NFL games (not including the Bears). I'd maybe rather watch a Pats/Colts game when it was a big rivalry but outside of that, college football all day.

It kills me whenever people say "games wouldnt be meaningful if they had a playoff", people still go crazy about college basketball games and they have a tournament that invites 65 fuckin teams, not to mention a conference tournament beforehand, it doesnt get anymore meaningless than that.

You dont need a shitty ass system in order to make big games worth watching.

Why not just play an extra quarter, with no possession or first to score rules? Just that, an extra quarter. Not really sure why the game has to be over as fast as possible.

I'd be fine with that, but people will cite 'safety' concerns (which is total bullshit on like a thousand levels, but that's not something I want to get into), and the 'excitement' factor.

I can buy the excitement factor, because at the end of the day sports is the entertainment business, but not at the expense of the integrity of the game. CFB OT prostitutes the game.
