I'd like to personally apologize on behalf of Microsoft for the .02% of people living in Bumfuck, Egypt that are affected by long periods of internet outage.
Lulz. I see your college education has served you well. He asked if the internet check-in was even a big deal, and I listed an example of a situation where a ton of people who would likely own an Xbone wouldn't be able to use it.
Why would these people likely own an XBJ if they don't have a consistent internet connection? Are they in such a black hole of no interwebs that they don't know it has a 24 hour internet check in?
I'm sorry, I don't see a likely situation where someone wants an XBJ so bad that they must have one, yet doesn't have a secure enough connection to either a) not care about the 24 hour check in or b) know about the fact that 24 hour check in exists.
And if you buy one and don't know about that? Well, sorry about your luck. It's not like it hasn't been plastered all over that thing you can't connect to for more than 4 days out of a week. I hear they call it the internet. Check Wikipedia on your phone or tablet if you need more information about it.
You can't even play online on 1.5 mbps now. Even double that is usually awful.
You can play virtually any online game just fine with as little as 512k upstream provided your connection has low latency and minimal jitter. The latter two things are every bit important as raw bandwidth, if not more so where online gaming is concerned.

768k is the minimum for this gen, so im sure the ps4 and xbone will be about the same in terms of speed requirements again...
If you have a 768k upstream and do not have other devices accessing the Internet on your network, you will be fine provided the connection is solid.

True. I don't even live in the part of town that has shitty internet, but there is a possibility that I could end up living there someday though. I'm merely pointing out that Microsoft is going to lose a lot of people this generation because not everyone has a perfect internet connection like they seem to think.
