Indiana Ties Number of Wins from Last Year in Victory

Bloomington, IN - In a easy win for Indiana over the Akron Zips, they have successfully tied last year's win count in their first three games.

"It's just embarrassing when you win your first 3 games, and in the process tie your previous win count," said Coach Thompson after the game, "It shows what kind of team I'm coaching now. Coming off of a season like that, they really need a leader who can lead them to some wins. That's me."

The Zips, who were also 2-0, weren't expecting to win this game. "We just came in hoping not to be raped," their quarterback, Chris Jacquemain said last night. "We willing had sex instead of getting raped. That's the way I look at it."

The first half was all Indiana. Down 10-3 at the start of the 2nd quarter, the Hoosiers poured in 21 points in 7 minutes to take the lead, 24-10. Of course, just like last game, their offense shut down in the 2nd half. But thankfully, the defense stepped up their game, only giving up 10 points to the Zips' powerful offense.

But the real star today was Mitch Ewald, the Indiana Kicker. He was 4-4 for field goals today, 2 of which were from 45 yards out or further. He kicked a 46 yarder to open the game, and then a 51 yarder late in the 4th. He also hit a chip-shot from 24 yards out and an average one from 37. "I just had the hot hand--or foot," he said after the game, "and I used it to my advantage."

Next week, the Hoosiers put their undefeated record on the line as they face Michigan in their first Big 10 game of the season.

With Kellen Lewis Gone, Hoosiers on a Roll

Ann Arbour, MI - With Kellen Lewis out of the way, the Hoosiers are winning again, just like they used to.

With Lewis at the helm of the Hoosiers offense, they went 3-9 and got creamed in almost all of their Big-10 games. From the moment he was kicked off the team, Coach Thompson knew the Hoosiers had gotten better. "The losing attitude of the Hoosiers went away the moment they heard that Kellen Lewis was gone," he said after the Michigan game, "Kellen was so depressed about losing, it spread throughout the team. When Ben Chappell took the lead role of the football team, his winning attitude caught one with everyone else, and they started believing this was the year."

Their play has backed up their talk as well. Not only did they start 3-0, the upset Michigan IN THERE STADIUM!!!! Indiana hasn't done that in a very long time. Maybe a thousand years ago they beat the Wolverines in their stadium. But not lately.

Indiana's hopes of an undefeated season look slim, as they face Ohio State next week.

THE ANTHONY THOMPSON RADIO SHOW

Anthony Thompson: Hello, and welcome to "The Anthony Thompson Radio Show." It's me, Anthony Thompson, head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers. And beside me is John Stark, my assistant. Tonight, I will be taking questions from a few lucky fans. So John, who is our first lucky guest?

John Stark: Our first question today is from steelers1624, asking, “Did you think you'd be undefeated up to this point in the season?”

Thompson: If I had known how well our team would be playing right now, I would have said of course. But I didn’t think my Hoosiers team would do as well as they have so far. I thought 4-8 would be a stretch, and we would definitely have lost to the Michigan Wolverines. So no, I didn’t think we’d be undefeated at this point in the season.

Stark: Our next question is again from steelers1624, asking, and “Do you really think you guys have a chance of beating or even competing with [Ohio State]?”

Thompson: That’s a tough question to answer. There are two Indiana teams that I have seen so far this season; I’ve seen a great team that can beat anyone in the country, and I’ve seen a team that can’t do heck on offense or defense. If the first team I mentioned shows up next week against the Buckeyes, we can compete with them, and maybe we can beat them. If not, we’re screwed.

Stark: Steelers1624 posted another question, this time asking, “What in your mind is the key to beating OSU?”

Thompson: That’s an easy question to answer. Our defense is good, but not great. I know we can’t stop their offense. But we can outscore them. If we score 1, maybe 2 touchdowns each quarter, we can outscore them. But if we score 21 or 28 points, we cannot win. They’re just too good offensively.

Stark: We have a few more questions, all posted by steelers1624 (get it together, other people). He asked this time, "Who has been your most valuable player to this point?"

Thompson: Well, first off, all of our players have been valuable to this team. If you take away any of our starters, our team is greatly hurt. Every player is good in different ways, and it's hard to pick the most valuable player on this team. It would have been Bryan Payton, but he's injured and has only appeared in 2 games. It's probably been Ray Fisher. He's not only one of our best athletes, he hustles hard every single play of every single game. He works hard in practices too. When everyone else wants to quit running 50 laps, he says "Let's keep working," and he runs them all, even if everyone else goes home because they are so bored.

Stark: We are only taking 2 more questions, but since they are both from steelers1624, he probably doesn't care too much. He asks, "Do you plan on making any changes to the offensive gameplan or the offensive depth chart any time this season?"

Thompson: So far, I see no need to make any changes on the offensive or defensive side of the football. Some people aren't happy about Ben Chappell's play, but I am extremely satisfied. He might not be putting up the best stats, but his attitude and hustle make the whole team better. He doesn't play to jack up his stats; Ben Chappell plays to win. On the defensive side, every player is doing what he is assigned to do to perfection, so I have no desire to change anything at the moment.

Stark: Our final question asks, "Do you have any predictions on where you guys will be by seasons end?"

Thompson: Honestly, I have little doubt that we can make it to a bowl game. A 6-6 or 7-5 record doesn't seem that out of reach, considering how we have been playing so far. If we keep up our play, we can go to a pretty nice bowl game.

Stark: Well, that's all of our questions today.
