Hoosiers Wounded Physically and Emotionally Heading into Bye Week

Bloomington, IN - Amid the distractions of the recent Hoosiers who caused a huge accident because they were drinking and driving, the Hoosiers head into their bye week tired, sore, and emotionally crushed by the events that occurred.

They badly needed a bye week even before the accident. After playing Boise State and Ohio State on the road in consecutive, you can imagine how sore this Hoosiers squad was. "I could barely pick up my arms," said offensive lineman J.J. Fine. "[Boise State and Ohio State] were so strong up front, it was almost impossible for us to contain them." The tough win against Oregon State doesn't look as impressive as it was at the time; the Beavers haven't won a game this season, and have only scored 17 points since their loss to Indiana (they're 0-4, including a 13-0 loss to FIU). Nevertheless, that too was a tough game for the Hoosiers.

Next week they will face the 4-0 Wisconsin Badgers (they are closing in on a top 25 ranking), which at this point seems to be their last tough game for a while. They then face Iowa at home, Illinois on the road, Northwestern on the road (this is considered a trap game, considering the Hoosiers have struggled in recent years against the Wildcats), and then Michigan State. Then their season hits a tough home stretch, as they face both the Penn State Nittany Lions (the #2 team in the country) and the Arizona Wildcats (the 23rd best team in the country at this point). "That will be a test of how tough we really are," said the assistant kicking coach Sut Tehfukup, who was a star punter at Wabash in the 1950's. "If we can come from those games mostly unscathed, it shows that we are an extremely tough team."

Matte Not Guilty of Manslaughter, Still Suspended for Season

Bloomington, IN - In front of a huge crowd and a jury consisting of nine court justices, Will Matte was inexplicably found "Not Guilty" of manslaughter chargers. Nevertheless, Anthony Thompson suspended the starting center for the rest of the season.

"The suspension should give him plenty of time to think about what he did wrong," said Thompson yesterday. "I feel that the suspension will help him mature not only as a player, but as a human being as well. He now knows the punishment for doing stupid things like drinking and driving." Will Matte would be out for the rest of the year anyway (he broke his arm in two different places during the accident), but the suspension will keep the NCAA from getting mad at the Indiana staff for not taking action.

"Yeah, I was drinking and driving. A little late now," said Matte after the court case. "But they can't charge me for manslaughter, drinking underage, or drinking and driving anyway. So what's the danger." Replied John Wilson, who will be replacing Matte as the starting center, "When I outperform his ass, he'll never play again." He later clarified that he was joking, and he and Matte would be battling at the start of next season for the starting job, just like this year.

The NCAA is reportedly proud of the Hoosiers staff for taking action even though Matte was found innocent. "We couldn't be happier with the decision," said Felix Harper-Maximilien*, the chairman of the NCAA. "Even though Matte is technically innocent, we feel that the accusations should be enough to create a suspension. Indiana obviously agrees, and they will be rewarded accordingly."
